Yes. What was left in the wake of Luther, Calvin, and other the early “Reformers”? Old heresies rose from the grave like vampires — Nestorianism, iconoclasm (most branches), Arianism (Unitarian and Jehovah Witnesses’ denial of Christ’s divinity), borrowing elements from Albigensianism, and ultimately, leading to polytheism (Mormonism, which came out of American Protestantism).

Well, I guess it's just too bad you guys can't just torture and murder all those heretics, like the good old days.

From the last page of the preface, in Illorente's History of the Inquisition of Spain;

Twenty-one prisoners were found in it, not one of whom knew the name of the city in which he was : some had been confined three years, some a longer period, and not one knew perfectly the nature of the crime of which he was accused. One of these prisoners had been condemned, and was to have suffered on the following day. His punishment was to be death by the Pendulum. The method of thus destroying the victim is as follows : — the condemned is fastened in a groove, upon a table, on his back ; suspended above him is a Pendulum, the edge of which is sharp, and it is so constructed as to become longer with every movement. The wretch sees this implement of destruction swinging to and fro above him, and every moment the keen edge approaching nearer and nearer : at length it cuts the skin of his nose, and gradually cuts on, until life is extinct. It may be doubted if the holy office in its mercy ever invented a more humane and rapid method of exterminating heresy, or ensuring confiscation. This, let it be remembered, was a punishment of the Secret Tribunal, A. D. 1820 ! ! !

Yeah, I didn’t expect you to understand that one.

How many converts from Catholicism have you made with that attitude?

Jesus death and resurrection did away with all the structure of priests etc of the Old Testament.

“Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;
this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?"
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.

Whoever eats 19 my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.

Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum

Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"

Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.

And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."
As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him

Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."
Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?"
He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.” [John 6: 49-71]

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)

It certainly is tiresome having the same people denigrating the Mother of Jesus every time she is mentioned in any news article. You’d think they’d have better things to do—like reading the Bible, or praying, or something.

As your last post suggest, even Martin Luther respected the Virgin Mary. I went through his works in connection with some scholarly work I was doing at one time, and the ONLY title that Luther denied to Mary was “Queen of Heaven.” He thought that that violated what the prophets have to say about Ishtar as the Queen of Heaven.

All this Mary-hating came into Protestantism at a later time, I’m not sure why. But the mere mention of the name is enough to get them up in arms, I’m afraid.

I don’t make converts, God does that. I simply point to the truths in His word. Jesus also called them as He saw them. He was rather more pointed then I am.

Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Matthew23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Jesus said this.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

But Catholics say He is wrong and that is the flesh that profits.

You may notice that Jesus addressed only one group of people in that manner, the Scribes and Pharisees. He dined with prostitutes, tax collectors, publicans, and obviously charmed them.

So if you want to spew venom and sarcasm, write to the Pope or some bishops, but try being civil to the lowly.

That’s what I was saying! Catholics say Jesus was wrong when He said the flesh profits nothing but that He was speaking spiritually.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Scribes and Pharisees – aka teachers and leaders. Come in here trying to teach or lead others and get treated like them.

Jesus is referring to natural human nature, not His flesh, which is, of course, sinless, and perfect, and which exists by the divine act of being—i.e., by the same infinite act of being as the Word itself, Second Person of the Trinity.

If by “flesh” in this context, Jesus meant His own flesh, then the crucifixion and resurrection of His body would have profited the world nothing. It is precisely because HIS flesh DOES profit that He commanded us to receive it in the Eucharist. The flesh that profiteth nothing is OUR flesh.

In other words, you have ripped a few verses out of context, and indulged in the common error of assuming that a particular word, anywhere it appears in Scripture, always has precisely and exactly the same meaning.

Condolences on your loss.

I have heard from a number of people that work in hospitals (doctors, nurses) that "Catholics die best."

Nice try but that doesn’t work when comparing scripture to scripture.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

That verse is included in the conversation where He is talking about HIS flesh. Trying to make a switch and infer that He somehow switched to “our flesh” is nonsense and cannot be justified in context. Those are the tactics of the RCC and why those who finally realize the RCC has been lying to them leave that organization.

>> In other words, you have ripped a few verses out of context,<<

NO, I have intentionally left the IN context as opposed to your attempt to take them out of context.

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Also, this thread was not posted as a "caucus" therefore anyone may post on this thread.
