dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

[15] What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?

obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which
leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? [17] But thanks
be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the
heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, [18] and, having
been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Commentary:

12-13. Our body, while forming one substance with our soul, is also an instru-
ment (like a pen in the hand of a writer) which can be used either to do works of
justice and piety or to enter into combat against the spirit. True, it is a “mortal bo-
dy”, but, St John Chrysostom comments, “It is not in any sense an evil thing, be-
cause it can be a weapon of holiness and righteousness [...]. Our body stands
between vice and virtue. It is a weapon we can freely put to one use or the other.
The soldier who fights to defend his country uses the same weapons as the cri-
minal who makes an attempt on the life of his fellow citizens [...]. And so the bo-
dy can be an instrument of good or evil depending on what the soul chooses: it
is not naturally disposed to either course” (”Hom. on Rom”, 11).

The Need for Vigilance and the Parable of the Steward (Continuation)

(Jesus said to His disciples,) [39] “But know this, that if the householder had
known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have been awake and would
not have left his house to be broken into. [40] You also must be ready; for the
Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

[41] Peter said, “Lord are you telling this parable for us or for all?” [42] And the
Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set o-
ver his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? [43] Bles-
sed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. [44] Truly
I tell you, he will set him over all his possessions. [45] But if that servant says to
himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants
and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, [46] the master of that
servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does
not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful. [47] And that ser-
vant who knew his master’s will, but did not make ready or act according to his
will, shall receive a severe beating. [48] But he who did not know, and did what
deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much is gi-
ven, of him much will be required; and of him to whom men commit much they
will demand the more.”

Commentary:

40. God has chosen to hide from us the time of our death and the time when the
world will come to an end. Immediately after death everyone undergoes the Parti-
cular Judgment: “just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes
judgment...” (Hebrews 9:27). The end of the world is when the General Judgment
will take place.

41-48. After our Lord’s exhortation to vigilance, St. Peter asks a question (verse
41), the answer to which is the key to understanding this parable. On the one
hand, Jesus emphasizes that we simply do not know exactly when God is going
to ask us to render an account of our life; on the other — answering Peter’s ques-
tion — our Lord explains that His teaching is addressed to every individual. God
will ask everyone to render an account of his doings: everyone has a mission to
fulfill in this life and he has to account for it before the judgment seat of God and
be judged on what he has produced, be it much or little.

“Since we know neither the day nor the hour, we should follow the advice of the
Lord and watch constantly so that, when the single course of our earthly life is
completed (cf. Hebrews 9:27), we may merit to enter with Him into the marriage
feast and be numbered among the blessed (cf. Matthew 25:31-46) and not, like
the wicked and slothful servants (cf. Matthew 25:26), be ordered to depart into
the eternal fire (cf. Matthew 25:41)” (Vatican II, “Lumen Gentium”, 48).

Does the fact that we are living by grace and not by law mean that we are free to sin? Of course not. You know that if you agree to serve and obey a master you become his slaves. You cannot be slaves of sin that leads to death and at the same time slaves of obedience that leads to righteousness. You were once slaves of sin, but thank God you submitted without reservation to the creed you were taught. You may have been freed from the slavery of sin, but only to become ‘slaves’ of righteousness.

October Devotion: The Holy Rosary

This feast was established by Pope Pius V to commemorate the great victory of the Christian army against the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
All soldiers on the battlefield prayed the Rosary for three hours and the wind has shifted in their favor. They were able to defeat an army three times bigger, in one of the greatest naval victory in history.
Pope Pius V named this the Feast of Our Lady of Victories, to be celebrated on October 7th.
In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title of this memorial to Feast of the Holy Rosary.

Pope Paul VI established the form that we celebrate this feast today, in 1969 under the name “Our Lady of the Rosary”.
“The celebration of this day invites all to mediate upon the mysteries of Christ, following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was so singularly associated with the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of the Son of God.”

Dearest Lord, may I see you today and every day in the person of your sick, and, whilst nursing them, minister unto you. Though you hide yourself under the unattractive disguise of the irritable, the exacting, the unreasonable, may I still recognize you and say: “Jesus, my patient, how sweet it is to serve you.” Lord, give me this seeing faith, then my work will never be monotonous. I will ever find joy in humoring the fancies and gratifying the wishes of all poor sufferers...

And, O God, while you are Jesus, my patient, deign also to be to me a patient Jesus, bearing with my faults, looking only to my intention, which is to love and serve you in the person of each of your sick. Lord, increase my faith (Lk 17,5), bless my efforts and work, now and for evermore.

(1386-1456) Saint John was born in Italy. He became a lawyer before becoming a Franciscan. He preached in various countries of Eastern Europe, bringing about great revivals of the faith. He also led a section of the Christian army at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456 in order to defend Europe from the advances of the Turks.

O God, who raised up Saint John of Capistrano

First Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-20
For the love of Christ controls us, because we are convinced that One has died for all; therefore all have died. And He died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once regarded Christ from a human point of view, we regard Him thus no longer. Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Another said, "I will follow You, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

Born: 1386 :: Died: 1456

St. John was born at Capistrano in Italy. His father who was a German knight, died when John was still young. John studied law at the University of Perugia and then became a lawyer and governor of the city of Perugia.

When war broke out between Perugia and Malatesta, John tried hard to make peace but failed. Enemies of the city threw John into prison and he started to think about the real meaning of life.

John's enemies were not in a hurry to set him free. He realized that the salvation of his soul was more important than anything else.

So when he was miraculously set free, at the age of 30, John joined a Franciscan monastery. For John, life as a poor friar was a big change. He had to sacrifice his freedom for the love of Jesus and he tried with all his heart to do this.

After he became a priest, John was sent out to preach. He and St. Bernardine of Siena, spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, everywhere. John traveled all over Europe preaching for forty years and those who heard him were moved to love and serve Jesus better.

When St. John was 70 years old, The Turks decided to conquer Europe and to wipe out the Church of Jesus.

Pope Callistus II sent St. John to all the Christian kings of Europe to beg them to unite and fight the mighty Turkish army. The kings obeyed this poor, barefoot friar.

He then marched off at the head of 70,000 Christian soldiers leading them and encouraged the men to keep fighting.

He stirred up their love of God and their courage with his fiery words. But even though a big army of Christians came to fight Mohammed II and his Turks, it looked as though they would lose. The enemy army was much bigger.

Then the saint himself ran to the front lines. Holding his crucifix up high, this thin, small old man kept crying, "Victory, Jesus, victory!" And the Christian soldiers felt full of courage. They fought until the enemy ran away in fear and they won the battle of Belgrade.

St. John Capistrano died a short time later, on October 23, 1456.
