Modesty in the church

Posted on 11/13/2013 5:43:01 PM PST by Faith Presses On

The Bible clearly says that women should dress modestly. Why does much of the church in America not follow what the Bible says? (And I'm a woman myself, I should add). It's not so much new believers who dress immodestly who are a concern, but women in leadership.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

Didn’t Paul also say that a woman’s hair, if left to grow and not plaited, can serve as a veil in church?

Paul says a Woman’s long hair is her covering.

No matter how much I’ve tried to teach modest apparel, my daughters are always pushing the boundaries to see how much they can get away with. And they’re home schooled.

Yep, a mans enemies in this instance becomes those of his own household, ha ha.

Read the passage again. If the hair were meant to be the covering of the head,

Not trying to be wise but maybe you should read it again.

1 cor 11
14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

I don,t think you really want an honest answer on that one.

Dressing attractively is one thing. Dressing enticingly is another

You are right, there is nothing as enticing as a supposedly Godly woman dressed as a sex symbol.

And if they happen to be speaking, what man is going to hear anything they say?

Perhaps instead, Christians should quit worrying about how short a skirt is, or if (gasp) a bit of cleavage shows through and instead worship God together in peace.

Yep we sure can,t let Scriptural teaching interfere with our girls basketball team can we?

Frankly, I think this topic is best suited for a small group Bible study or a one-on-one situation with an older (in Christ, if not age) believer instructing a younger believer.

You are right, the older women should be teaching the younger ones
Titus 2
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Since you've dealt with all the complexities of modest dress and decorum... how about a few words on salvation, and the path to that.. You know... It's not that hard..

Perhaps you do not read tag lines of posters, or their homepage, or links to their website, or follow the religious forum.

But it is definitely a losing fight. Try to mention any of this, and you’ll be accused of having a dirty mind.

Yup!

It’s unbelievable how I’ve seen women dress in church. They look like hookers or that they’re going out for a night on the town.

Yup!

If we didn't have dirty minds, we wouldn't need salvation. It's yours. Own it.

Yup!!

And what, perzacktly, does any of that have to do with salvation? Does any of this discussion lead any to Christ? Or is it a bunch of folks beating..... their chests?

I am glad for your evangelical intent, which i share, but if you object to issues of sanctification then you must object to most of the NT.

But the problem is, modern female fashion is quite often designed to sexualize the wearer.

Hasn't it ALWAYS been?

The one thing I see missing from these threads is the story of Salvation.

ok...

Ok.

OK!!!!

John 6:28-29

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Salvation is NOT the focus of this thread.

It is ASSUMED that the ladies beings discussed ARE ‘saved’ and NOW the question is how are they to present themselves to the world.

The older women in a church are given the task of guiding the younger women on things like this.
