Four calling birds? A partridge in a pear tree? No one is sure exactly what the twelve gifts in the “The Twelve Days of Christmas” represent, but there have been several theories. One interesting claim is that the song was written to help young Catholics learn their faith. In this interpretation, each Christmas gift represents something connected to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Looking at the song this way helps families focus on the true meaning of Christmas. We've taken this tradition and added a little bit of an LDS spin to it.

On each of the twelve days leading up to Christmas, you and your family can take a closer look at each of the Christmas gifts from the song. Use the following interpretations and lesson ideas as a jumping off point for relating the twelve gifts to Christ:

A partridge in a pear tree: The partridge could represent Jesus, who said He would shelter his chicks under his wings, similar to what a mother partridge does (see Luke 13:34). Tell family members to make a

list of Jesus’s qualities and personality traits (compassionate, forgiving, powerful, etc.). Adults and older children can find scriptures in the topical guide that correspond with each of these characteristics.

Two turtle doves: These have been thought to represent the Old and New Testaments, but they could also represent the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Talk with your family about how all scripture works together to testify of Christ. Have each family member find a scripture in each of the standard works that testifies of Christ.

Three French hens: These can represent the three kings bearing gifts, or they could stand for the three Christlike attributes of faith, hope, and charity. Read 1 Corinthians 13:13 and Moroni 10:20-23. Set goals of what you could do as a family or as individuals to better develop one of these attributes.

Four calling birds: These represent the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), because each of these disciples call out to the world through their testimonies of Jesus Christ. Look up “Gospels” in the Bible Dictionary; look at the chart that depicts harmony in the gospels and notice how several of these four men testified of some of the same events from Christ’s life. Talk about the principle of having more than one witness, found in 2 Corinthians 13:1 and Ether 5:4.

Five golden rings: These symbolize the first five books of the Old Testament (known in some religions as the Torah or the Pentateuch). Talk about how Christ led Moses and the children of Israel to the promised land and especially discuss the many miracles that happened along the way. Discuss other miracles that Christ performed and look up corresponding scriptures. You can also talk about miracles you have experienced in your own lives.

Six geese a-laying: These stand for the six days it took Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to create the Earth. Read the account in Genesis 1. Have younger children draw pictures of the creation.

Seven swans a-swimming: These represent the seven gifts of the spirit, although in LDS tradition there are many more than seven. Make a list of spiritual gifts from Doctrine and Covenants 46:11-33, 1 Corinthians 12:1-12, and Moroni 10:8-18. Try to identify strengths you have and how you can improve upon them.

Eight maids a-milking: These stand for the eight Beatitudes, as taught by Jesus in Matthew 5 and 3 Nephi 12. Have family members make up skits to demonstrate one of the Beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing: These represent the nine fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5:22. On a piece of paper folded in the middle, write on one side family members’ ideas of how they feel when the Spirit is present, and on the other side how they feel when the Spirit is not present. Discuss what you could do as a family to have the Spirit dwell in your home.

Ten lords a-leaping: These signify the Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20 and Mosiah 12-13. Discuss each commandment or draw a picture to represent each one. Have each family member share an experience in which they chose to follow one of the commandments even though it may not have been the easiest choice.

Eleven pipers piping: These symbolize the eleven faithful apostles in Christ’s original church. See if you can name all of them. Talk about who these men were before they were called as apostles: Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen; Matthew was a tax collector. Why did Christ call men from such humble circumstances? How did these men learn and grow through their experiences with Christ?

Twelve drummers drumming: In the original Catholic version, the twelve drummers represent the twelve points of the Apostles' Creed (an early statement of belief accepted by the Catholic Church). For an LDS take, they can represent the twelve living apostles in Christ’s restored church. Look up information about the apostles and prophets on lds.org. Create an apostle memory matching game by making fifteen cards with the apostles’ pictures and fifteen cards with their names; children must match the faces with the names.

Man made holy days in secular humanist countries are just that. Secular human festivals... nothing scriptual but certainly traditional and predate the birth of my Messiah... I remember reading somewhere about warning us about the traditions of men.....

This is what I will say. if statues of Mary scream ‘idolatry’ from lots of church denominations, but those same screaming will add a man statue and a baby and call it a ‘nativity scene’..... it is no less idolatry...

If December 25th were a date set by God(which it isn’t) to remember the birth of Messiah( which we are not commanded to do) the world would have nothing to do with it. After all, God has commanded one day in seven — the Lord’s Day — to worship Him. Does the world observe it? Not the way it is laid out in Scripture...
the world loves Christmas, but hates the Messiah. Shouldn’t a believer be just a little suspicious of that?
This is not many years in the making... I have only had this view since the beginning of 2013...I have been living by faith for almost two years and I asked, sought and knocked and it has opened my eyes, changed my worship and has allowed me more freedom than this world or this secular humanist country could ever give you...
When truth is revealed, why would I ever want to knowingly do what He commands us not to do?

We all need more mercy and grace than we can even know.I lived in my own wilderness..and I am trying to repent from vain worship or idol worship and seeking to follow the commandments of God over the traditions of men..
And if I am called a Scrooge for not bowing to secular humanist gods, I count that as joy....

It is tough to buy or sell on December 25th but I will find some places .... it isn’t completely mandated that this country be closed on the man made holy day so no one can buy or sell.... a little less than turkey/football/shopping day though....

____________________________________________

How do feel about the Mormons and their refusal to honor the cross of the LORD Jesus Christ but they place gold painted statues of a ficticous “angel” on top of their religious buildings ???

and statues of Joey Smith the false prophet ala Mohammad inside their religious buildings ???

speaking of “nativity scenes”..

no problemo...

the Mormons dont honor God on Dec 25...

oh no...

its the Mormon savior Joey Smith as a baby in a cradle in a cabin...on Dec 23 his birthdate...

“mormon savior Joey Smith” ???

Yeppers...

The Mormon koran states that nobody gets into the mormon afterlife unless Joey Smith says they can..

“the mormin koran” ???

they call it the book of mormon...

Its as truthful as the koran and also written by a false prophet who rejected the LORD Jesus Christ as God ...

Bring the popcorn and let the slander begin!

Ah... the Christmas season.

A time when the smell of pine enterers our Christian homes and faint whiffs of brimstone can be detected by SLC Mormons...

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

My point is we have all fallen short... and far far shorter than we think... the churches aren’t purer, they are dirtier with time... Satan has played in each and every one... and continues... and he owns this country.. there were actually times in this country that christmas trees and the celebration of Christmas were illegal... because those believer believed the word of God...

Well Mary the older sister of Elizabeth was a Catholic and queen for just 5 years 1553-1558 and managed to murder at least 300 Protestants, many by fire..

Well, they don't count as "English martyrs/saints" to some folks. The crimes of "Bloody Mary" get swept under the royal rug, doncha know!

Slander?

Is that like accusing others of rejoicing in *bashing God fearing people*?

If you’re employed, do you work on the “pagan” day or do you take it off like many of the rest? Have you insisted your employer allow you to work on the Holidays you consider to be pagan celebrations?

I’ve worked with folks who deny the Holidays, don’t partake in any festivities, won’t attend the Christmas luncheon, etc.

Yet, once all the leftovers are put in the breakroom, are there filling a plate. What’s the difference? The food was “blessed” for a pagan feeding...ha, it is but to laugh.

For me and my family, we don’t “worship” any of the so called “idols” you mention, but I’ll caution that many, if not all people have some form of “idols”.

As for the mormons, JS is their primary idol...glad I’m out.

"Christ himself uttered these words during the First Vision “... and all of their Creeds are an abomination to me ....”

JS wrote it ambiguously enough to permit others to come to that conclusion.

It's an assumption on the part of mormons to believe that. JS never recorded that he was speaking to God or that Jesus was speaking to him.

The use of the word "Personages" is in no way an adequate description of God and Jesus, I don't care how you try to spin that.

1 John:

4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

4:4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

4:5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.

4:6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

First off, the warning about testing the spirits and the fact those false prophets would be known by their worldliness. Well, JS was quite worldly. He was a lecher, a thief, a con-man, etc. Many of the things JS did while he was the "prophet" were the behaviors that are in direct contradiction of a Godly man. There were a lot of "convenient" "revelations" that "permitted" him a great deal of latitude.

Secondly, the "personages" description and the failure of the spirits to clearly identify and confess Jesus during the purported 1st vision.

The narrative (1st vision, [pick a version]) is ambiguous, it does not clearly state that God and Jesus, came down, nor does he claim to have heard the name of Jesus, just "this is my beloved son..." (That IS NOT "confessing" Jesus). It's implied through the use of descriptive language. But at no time does the personage (spirit) state absolutely that it was Jesus who was going to "speak" to JS.

Wishing something to be true doesn't make it true.

The mormons HAVE to believe JS was telling the truth or the whole, vile, scam comes crashing down around their heads. The Bible stands on its own, the BoM not so. The D&C, no chance, nothing more than a collection of heresies and blasphemies. The Book of Abraham...does it count towards baptisms for the dead? That's about the only stretch I can make for it's FALSE interpretation by a so-called "prophet".

I thank God that the scales were removed from my eyes and that I'm out.

"Slander is the oral communication of false statements"

Would you please state what is or has been slander, in this thread or any thread.

"Libel is to publish in print, writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation"

I think you actually mean libel.

Would you please state what is or has been libel, in this thread or any thread.

You have a propensity it appears to make charges against individuals specifically and Christians in general with no evidence presented.

I observe His calendar.. not the Gregorian calendar. I observe His sabbath ( the next one is coming up on the Gregorian day Wednesday this week- the 29th day of His eighth month as Scripture details). God never named days, He numbered them in scripture..

I am a full time caregiver for my dad who has Alzheimer’s so I quit my corporate job by faith and have lived the last two years reading and studying His word and serving...
He provides even in this economy... And as Scripture says, He is and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him..

halleluYah my eyes have been opened..If you get His calendar revealed to you, you will then see how time itself is counterfeit.. which is what scripture says Satan would do..
I had already quit my job in faith prior to learning this through scripture... but people would have choices to make... the Gregorian calendar is counterfeiting and man made and not scriptural. If you get His calendar revealed to you, you may need to quit your job, or use all your vacation time to be used for the proper Sabbaths, or fail tests on certain days if you were attending school.. or be ‘churchless’ or have your friends and family look at you like you have three eyes...
When you see His real timekeeping in Scripture, you can see what has been lost, hidden or used in substitution of His truth.. and when a person knows the authentic, you can spot the counterfeit...

So my days are not like the worlds... and Thank God for that!

That is why I know mercy and grace is needed more than we can even know. Those who have been the most lawless like me understands what He did and does..

That is why His days, His months and His feasts and Sabbaths are much more important to me than what secular humanist countries or ‘churches’ deem as holy days because traditions and customs trump real Scripture..
And I worship in spirit and truth... not in the public square because there are times a Tuesday in this world will be a sabbath on His calendar... that is a work day in this world...
If you want to start asking, seeking and knocking, ask God to explain Jericho and the seven day march to you... and try to square this seven day march with the sabbath commandment.. only one way that isn’t a violation of His Word...
And it lies with a new moon and His calendar- maybe the book of Jasher may help. May He bless your journey more than He has mine..

May God richly bless you for caring for your father...I can only imagine the hardships. My grandmother had a form of Alzheimer’s shortly before her passing...it was quite sad really, but my love for her and God’s strength permitted me to spend some short, but quality time with her for which I will always be grateful. I do miss her and my grandfather so, but look forward to a joyous reunion.

Quite an informative post...thanks for sharing.
