"They portray him not as a "liberation theologist," but a rather as more of a "right wing Peronist.."

Oh great choices, he gets to be either a right-wing Peronist or a left-wing Peronist:

Could the Argentinian experience lead to a certain unease about women's leadership?

Thank you, cdc. Evil has played in all institutions, in increasing degrees, even where the presence of the Lord firmly and forever remains. But for a remnant, many are lost and shall remain so, even in the great Church.

You are intellectually generous and willing to exercise Reason. I appreciate it, and agree with your post. And you’ll be in trouble for expousing that Reason of yours, and your patience with historical fact in an angry era. :) thx, Rita

You didn’t read the column. I can’t say very many on this thread did though. :)

I'm so bothered by our priest & his Hispanic issues that it's become best for me not to participate in the church things. I'll take my issues straight to the heavens & avoid the middleman.

As it was intended...

I read the translation about a week ago. I wish he had included some pastoral admonitions and exhortations; perhaps bring up matters of avarice and covetousness and the desire for power.

Human institutions reflect the virtue or lack of it in its participants.

He would be clarifying the misinterpretation from Spanish to English, if we are to believe the Holy See’s explanation about the translation. Which I am inclined to believe. But I wouldn’t call it that. I’d probably call it a correction to the translation, which I think was intentional in the first place.

I read the entire column and the translation issue is a straw man. Regarding the translation of “derrame”, how is “trickle-down” any different from “spilling”, “overflow”?

Your pope in my view has no choice but to lean (or push) toward Socialism...

His misguided understanding of the scriptures (I believe) has moved him in the direction with he setting the example of people giving up everything they have except for their own very basic needs and distributing this 'excessive wealth' to the have not plays into the hands of the Socialist agenda...It is the Socialist agenda...

Perhaps it's a theological issue with your pope and not so much political...It's just fortunate for him that there is a political agenda in place to help him along...

Bambi also said he was the New Reagan when it suited his purpose. Nothing Obama says is true. The only truth from Obama is “if his lips are moving, he is lying.”

For every Evita and Cristina there is a Thatcher and Merkel. It does blow up the feminist crap about somehow women leaders are more caring and less confrontational.

By the way what the hell is he difference between a left wing vs. right wing Personist? A Personist is a fascist period.

1. I am not Roman Catholic. So he is not “my Pope”.

2. Matthew 19:21-23

King James Version (KJV)

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

from the secular leftist view, the only belief they have in Jesus was that concerning economics, a communist; and politically, for the revolutionary overthrow of all not-communist governments.

If I were Catholic I would be very disenchanted. Truth screams at us and when it is violated or so diluted, that too screams at us. This is the first Pope I am not inclined to respect. At least he seemed to make an unequivocal stand against abortion.

Good points. I guess what I was trying to get at was that the Argentinian experience,in particular, has had some huge impacts from dubious-to-disturbing female leadership.

I'll take 100 Thatchers, please. And put them all in the U.S. Senate.

As to what is right-wing Peronism and what is left-wing Peronism, I do not know. National Socialists vs International Socialists? Both dead-end streets.

5 As I’ve said earlier, he has a strong record of opposition to Liberation Theology during his time as a bishop in South America. ...

Attributed to Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev:

 “Religion is the opiate of the people, so let’s give them opium.” 1959

Would you agree with the statement below?

Liberation Theology was invented by the KGB to subvert the Roman Catholic Church. Soviet agents were dispatched to Latin America to infect the church and spread it among the people. The doctrine asked the poor and downtrodden to revolt and form a Communist government, not in the name of Marx or Lenin, but in continuing the work of Jesus Christ, a revolutionary who opposed economic and social discrimination.

Yes, Central and South America were infected by Liberation Theology. One reason was Soviet-controlled Communist agents. Another was Latin America’s traditional tendency to keep falling into socialism. Another was the twisting of thee “Spirit of Vatican II.”

The Vatican finally realized what was happening and declared that the movement was heretical. So it was cut back. And Reagan also put a lot of pressure on during his time in office.

In any case, Liberation Theology continues to appeal to many South Americans. Pope Francis was one of the more important people who dedicated themselves to fighting it.
