The Bible vs The Book of Mormon (Great video, 1H+)
Living Hope Ministries/YouTube ^ | 11/06/2006 | Living Hope Ministries

Posted on 12/19/2013 9:51:20 PM PST by Greetings_Puny_Humans

This is a fantastic film put together by Living Hope Ministries (they are hosting this video on YouTube). Highly recommended, not just as an expose for Mormonism, but great information on the historicity of the Bible as well. They interview over 40 archaeologists, linguists, historians (and whatever kind of expert you would expect to be interviewed). From Living Hope's description of the documentary:

"The Book of Mormon claims to be "a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible." Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon declare themselves to be ancient, historical, and reliable rules of faith--the very word of God.

These claims have historically been taken on faith. But is there any evidence to support them one way or the other? Is it even possible to "test" a rule of faith? More to the point, is there any basis for placing one's faith in the Bible or the Book of Mormon?

It's an important question. It's an eternal question. This presentation puts the Bible and the Book of Mormon to the same tests. History, archaeology, textual criticism, and other disciplines combine to shed light on what is true...and what is false.

Truth never fears investigation. Faith need not--and should not--be blind. Discover for yourself which of these books is worthy of being called "scripture" and which is worth of your trust.

Participants: Thomas W. Murphy, William Wilson, Philip Lindholm, Philip Johnston, Peter Williams, Simon Gathercole, Gabriel Barkay, and others.

Film at link up above.

There is no Bible vs. Book of Mormon, no more than there was a Jesus vs. John the Baptist. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are just God’s words spoken to two different people.

Vednome, Do you have a brain? I’ve been active LDS for 52 years and your last statement is one of dumbest things I’ve ever heard!

Christ is my Savior. Joseph Smith was a prophet, just like Thomas S. Monson today, or Peter two centuries ago.

I guess that you don’t think God cares enough to talk to man anymore....or maybe he lost his ability to speak.

Just because your not listening, doesn’t mean God and Christ are still not talking.

...that should have been Peter two millennium ago rather than two centuries

“Christ is my Savior. Joseph Smith was a prophet, just like Thomas S. Monson today,”

Like Brigham Young!

“Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

God speaks to men. But where it all breaks down is where that dude says, “God told me to tell YOU,,,,”

Like Thomas Paine said. That’s hearsay and the teller needs to have some proof.

“There is no Bible vs. Book of Mormon,”

I have a link and a video that says otherwise! Published by Living Hope Ministries. They do quite a good job. I just got done with the part about BoM claims about 2,000,000 people dying on hill Cumorah, swords and arrowheads, metal armor, etc, and a Spanish archaeologist having a “Are you stupid, or what?” face every time the interviewer asks him something about a claim in the book of Mormon.

The Bible is truth spoken thousands of years ago by God, the Word of God, who came to Earth and became flesh...

The fictitious badly written pages called book of mormon of course was “spoken” by Joey Smith who published it in 1830 with his name as author on the fly leaf...

and indeed there are two different groups of readers...

Christians read the Bible which is the most sold book in the world..

Mormons cant give their book of mormon away..

I guess that you don’t think God cares enough to talk to man anymore....or maybe he lost his ability to speak.

No, God doesn't need to keep on speaking, that's the whole point.

His last and final word was HIS SON. The cup of grace is now full. No need to add anything else to it. Why do you insist on doing so?

IMHO the efficacy of the two books is which book adhears to the teachings of Jesus and the prophets and promotes the healing for mankind.

Well, I don’t mean to insult but, we should be ready to acknowledge our doctrinal differences.

I didn’t have the opportunity to become a missionary in LOS and learn at the MTM just what thuse differences are.

However, I have read D&C, BoM and PoGP, as well the many sermons and beliefs of the prophets.

In 1859 Brigham Young mad very clear the following:

“[E]very man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are — I with you and you with me. I cannot go there without his consent” (Journal of Discourses 7:238. See also Search These Commandments, 1984, pg. 133).

I’m sure I’ve read other authorities saying the same and I may also find further references but, hope you see where my comment was informed.

If I am in error I look forward to being disabused but, I try carefully to get it right.

I do believe God continues to speak to each of us much like my earthly Father does.

I don’t believe anything new is being revealed so much as we are given another insight to certain immutable characteristics of man and God.

Man has always been man and God has been God before we were created and before anything else.

I believe that his guidance remains the same for our pitiful condition that can only improve as we circle around that big yellow thing which warms us.

I dunno. I don’t see man’s natural being diferntas far as what we are capable of; A force for good and a force of destruction.

Further, I see no way I can ever be judged “worthy”. If I am to to be judged worthy then by what standard? Whose standard?

Would that standard be unchangeable and applied to all man?

As a Mason I understand what that means but, just as sure as I might prove myself worthy to be a Mason I can just as easily be found no longer worthy of being a Mason because of man’s nature and violating my oath.

There is no such possibility of ever being worthy in God’s eye.

Him do I know?

He tells us: “There is none worthy, no not one”.

Call me crazy but, he never amended that statement for any reason. Nor for any condition I might create.

You know this bu your PoGP.

I know this through one of the Three Great Parables found in Mathew 13:45.

Just thinking out loud.

Yeah Bro....and I smoked dope and snorted cocaine for 20 + years. But I finally realized it wasn't getting me where I wanted to be.
So I quit.

Facts are...Archeology and historical records just don't support this Mormon fantasy.
