(from April 18, 2011) The hidden exodus:Catholics becoming Protestants
National Catholic Reporter ^ | Apr. 18, 2011 | Thomas Reese

Posted on 12/30/2013 9:35:20 AM PST by RnMomof7

......"The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life has put hard numbers on the anecdotal evidence: One out of every 10 Americans is an ex-Catholic. If they were a separate denomination, they would be the third-largest denomination in the United States, after Catholics and Baptists. One of three people who were raised Catholic no longer identifies as Catholic.........

"Thankfully, although the U.S. bishops have not supported research on people who have left the church, the Pew Center has.

Pew’s data shows that those leaving the church are not homogenous. They can be divided into two major groups: those who become unaffiliated and those who become Protestant. Almost half of those leaving the church become unaffiliated and almost half become Protestant. Only about 10 percent of ex-Catholics join non-Christian religions.

This article will focus on Catholics who have become Protestant. I am not saying that those who become unaffiliated are not important; I am leaving that discussion to another time."................

"Nor are the people becoming Protestants lazy or lax Christians. In fact, they attend worship services at a higher rate than those who remain Catholic. While 42 percent of Catholics who stay attend services weekly, 63 percent of Catholics who become Protestants go to church every week. That is a 21 percentage-point difference.

" Seventy-one percent say their faith is “very strong,” while only 35 percent and 22 percent reported that their faith was very strong when they were children and teenagers, respectively. On the other hand, only 46 percent of those who are still Catholic report their faith as “very strong” today as an adult.

Jim Jones was a cult leader who told his followers to drink the koolaid and by doing so would have eternal life.

HMMMmmm...

He also claimed people had to be part of his cult to be saved.

HMMMmmm...

He claimed everything he said was straight from God. So did David Koresch.

HMMMmmm and hmmm......

This is why thousands of intellectuals from other faiths have abandoned Protestantism in droves as nothing more but a wasteland of doctrine and heresy.

And yet the CHURCH is hard pressed to find enough men available to become priests.

Did Christ’s visible Church pass away? Did the gates of hell prevail against it?

Then Thank GOD! for Luther!

not the scandal of 35,000 garden variety biblical interpretations

Hey Alex, we're back up to 35,000!

So Steelfish, can you provide a list of the 35,000 garden variety biblical interpretations or is that just something being pulled out of your hat?

Seems to me when I read through virtual pagrs of FR the FRoman Catholic interpretations are all not in sync. Quite a few little popes running around here.

It is amazing how the College of Cardinals were ‘moved’ twice in a row, no less, in choosing a Medici for Pope.

Not exactly accurate.

Many that you listed are in communion with each other. In a sense no different than the orders in the Papist church.

Unless you are willing to agree to that we need to start counting the thousands of Papist denominations.

An assertion or did you ask and interview?

I went to Haiti on a mission trip with a large group of them, so I spent a lot of time with them over the months before, during and after the trip.

It was an ongoing joke amongst them. It was their observation, not mine.

Oh, you mean they all speak with ONE voice, and ONE truth and ONE SET OF Beliefs on the Great Commission given to Peter and his Apostles.

David Koresh and Jim Jones had their own “Christians” sects too as did Jimmy Swaggart, Joel Osteen and the rest of the charlatans.

Changes nothing I posted. Catholic haters are on a guilt trip because they know deep down that the Catholic Church is the one, true, apostolic church that Jesus started. He started no other. I know this, you know this, and anyone with a miniscule knowledge of Church history knows this.

The Lord said this while he was living. Jesus could have said, “If he will not listen to ME.” So Christ’s Church must teach with His authority. Did Christ’s visible Church pass away? Did the gates of hell prevail against it? Did Christ’s visible Church pass away? Did the gates of hell prevail against it?

You fail to see that the issue is not that of the church having authority, and i affirmed that Scripture provides for the church, not replace it, but the issue us that of a claim to assured veracity, and correct judgment, which is the basis for RC assurance.

The Lord by His Spirit also enjoined obedience to civil rulers, (Rm. 13:1-7; 1Pet. 2:13,14)but that such, or the magisterium in particular as the steward of Scripture, etc., is infallible, and superior authority than Scripture, so that only the teachings or persons the magisterium sanctions have spiritual authority, is not what Scripture teaches

For if it did then it would condemn prophets and the Lord Himself, as He was in rebellion against those who sat in the seat of Moses.

And in contrast to to the premise of a supreme assuredly correct magisterium being the basis for assurance, the church began because souls had assurance that an itinerant Preacher was of God (and God), as He established His claims upon Scriptural substantiation, in word and in power.

The magisterium is to recognize and affirm such, but even if it does not, men of God as still of God regardless, as the apostles were despite the rejection by those to whom the Lord also had enjoined conditional obedience to. (Mt. 23:2)

Those who presume of themselves above that which written, such as claiming a level of authority and veracity that discourages objective examination of teachings in order to ascertain their truthfulness, will end of persecuting true men of God, and are destined to lose their validity.
