Saturday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Jeroboam thought to himself:
“The kingdom will return to David’s house.
If now this people go up to offer sacrifices
in the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem,
the hearts of this people will return to their master,
Rehoboam, king of Judah,
and they will kill me.”
After taking counsel, the king made two calves of gold
and said to the people:
“You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough.
Here is your God, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”
And he put one in Bethel, the other in Dan.
This led to sin, because the people frequented those calves
in Bethel and in Dan.
He also built temples on the high places
and made priests from among the people who were not Levites.
Jeroboam established a feast in the eighth month
on the fifteenth day of the month
to duplicate in Bethel the pilgrimage feast of Judah,
with sacrifices to the calves he had made;
and he stationed in Bethel priests of the high places he had built.

Jeroboam did not give up his evil ways after this,
but again made priests for the high places
from among the common people.
Whoever desired it was consecrated
and became a priest of the high places.
This was a sin on the part of the house of Jeroboam
for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the earth.

Gospel Mk 8:1-10

In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat,

they will collapse on the way,
and some of them have come a great distance.”
His disciples answered him, “Where can anyone get enough bread
to satisfy them here in this deserted place?”
Still he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
They replied, “Seven.”
He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.
Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them,
and gave them to his disciples to distribute,
and they distributed them to the crowd.
They also had a few fish.
He said the blessing over them
and ordered them distributed also.
They ate and were satisfied.
They picked up the fragments left over–seven baskets.
There were about four thousand people.

He dismissed the crowd and got into the boat with his disciples
and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

Jeroboam’s Sin (Continuation)

[26] And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the
house of David; [27] if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the
LORD at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord,
to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king
of Judah.” [28] So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he
said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your
gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” [29] And he set
one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. [30] And this thing became a sin,
for the people went to the one at Bethel and to the other as far as Dan. [31] He
also made houses on high places, and appointed priests from among all the
people, who were not of the Levites. [32] And Jeroboam appointed a feast on
the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he
offered sacrifices upon the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves
that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that
he had made.

Unlawful Priests

[33] After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests
for the high places again from among all the people; any who would, he conse-
crated to be priests of the high places. [34] And this thing became sin to the
house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the
earth.

Commentary:

12:20-33. The tribes of the North, severing their links with the house of David,
proclaim Jeroboam king in a manner similar to the way Saul was elected (cf.
1 Sam 11:15). Rehoboam, Solomon’s son and successor, eventually bows to
the inevitable because he sees it must be the Lord’s will (v. 24).

But more serious than the political split is the religious split, as described here.
It looks like a return to the idolatry of the golden calf (Ex 32:1-5).

By pointing out that the priests at these shrines or sanctuaries were not Le-
vites, the sacred writer is at pains to stress that the worship carried out there
was unlawful. And he is making the same point when he says that Jeroboam
established a feast (v. 32) of his own making instead of keeping the feast of Ta-
bernacles that was celebrated in Jerusalem.

In the story of Jeroboam the great Christian writer Origen sees an example of
those who, by imprudently delving into human philosophies, risk abandoning
Christian truth. The Israelites (of old), Origen explains, went down into Egypt
and, taking the things sacred to the Egyptians and inspired by divine wisdom,
they used them to honor God. But Holy Scripture “wanted to show symbolical-
ly how living together with the Egyptians became an occasion of sin for some;
that is, to show how the knowledge of this world became a temptation to evil for
some of those who had been formed in the law of God and the worship that the
Israelites were to give him. For as long as Jeroboam lived in the land of Israel
and found the bread of the Egyptians distasteful, he did not build idols. But
when he went down to Egypt, in flight from wise Solomon—as if in flight from the
wisdom of God himself—and became a kinsman of the pharaoh [...], although he
later returned to the land of Israel, he came only to bring disunity to the people
of God and to force them to say, ‘ Here are your gods...’” (Origen, “Ad Grego-
rium”, 2).

13:33-34. Despite seeing the fulfillment of the oracle of the man of Judah (cf. 13:
5-7), and even though a prophet of Bethel ratified what that man said (cf. 13:32),
King Jeroboam persisted in his line of conduct. The terrible outcome (v. 34)
makes one ponder the grave consequences of persisting in sin, because, as
Scripture often reminds us and St John Chrysostom explains, “what angers and
offends God, more than sin itself, is that sinners show no sorrow for their sins”
(”Homiliae in Matthaeum”, 14, 4).

Second Miracle of the Loaves

Commentary:

1-9. Jesus repeats the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fish: the
first time (Mark 6:33-44) He acted because He saw a huge crowd like “sheep with-
out a shepherd”; now He takes pity on them because they have been with Him for
three days and have nothing to eat.

This miracle shows how Christ rewards people who persevere in following Him:
the crowd had been hanging on His words, forgetful of everything else. We should
be like them, attentive and ready to do what He commands, without any vain con-
cern about the future, for that would amount to distrusting Divine Providence.

10. “Dalmanutha”: this must have been somewhere near the Lake of Gennesaret,
but it is difficult to localize it more exactly. This is the only time it is mentioned
in Sacred Scripture. In the parallel passage in St. Matthew (15:39) Magadan
(sometime Magdala) is mentioned.

If this people continues to go up to the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, the people’s heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will put me to death.’ So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, ‘You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, Israel; these brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ He set up one in Bethel and the people went in procession all the way to Dan in front of the other. He set up the temple of the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not of the sons of Levi. Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast that was kept in Judah, and he went up to the altar. That was how he behaved in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made; and at Bethel he put the priests of the high places he had established.

Jeroboam did not give up his wicked ways but went on appointing priests for the high places from the common people. He consecrated as priests of the high places any who wished to be. Such conduct made the House of Jeroboam a sinful House, and caused its ruin and extinction from the face of the earth.

Jesus, High Priest

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.

Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.

Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

Lead them to new depths of union with your Son.

Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son.

Intercede for our priests, that offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer. Repeat the process with each mystery.

February Devotion: The Holy Family

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of February has been primarily asociated with the Holy Family, probably due to the feast of Our Lord's presentation at the temple, celebrated on February 2. At the very outset of Christ's work on earth, God showed the world a family in which, as Pope Leo XIII teaches, "all men might behold a perfect model of domestic life, and of all virtue and holiness." The harmony, unity, and holiness which characterized this holy Family make it the model for all Christian families.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph most kind, Bless us now and in death's agony.

Our Shepherd gives himself as our food

“Who can tell the mighty deeds of the Lord or proclaim all his praises?” (Ps 106[105],2). What shepherd has ever fed his sheep with his own body? But what am I saying? A shepherd? Mothers often entrust their infants to a nurse from their birth on. Jesus Christ, however, cannot agree to this for his sheep. He feeds us himself with his own blood and so makes us into one body with himself.

Consider, my brethren, that Christ was born of our own human substance. Are you going to say, then: What does that matter? It doesn't affect everyone else! Pardon me, my brother, it is of great profit to all of them. If he became man, if he came to take on our human nature, then that affects the salvation of all men. And if he came on behalf of all then he also came on behalf of each one in particular. Perhaps you will say: So how is it that everyone hasn't received the fruit they ought to be gaining from this coming? Don't blame Jesus who chose this means for the salvation of all; the fault lies with those who reject this blessing. For Jesus Christ unites himself to each of the faithful in the eucharist. He gives them rebirth, feeds them with himself, does not abandon them.

St. Faustinus and St. Jovita

Born/Died: Second Century

St. Faustinus and St. Jovita were brothers born in a noble family and lived in Brescia, Italy. From the time they were young, Faustinus and Jovita were well-known for their great love for God. They were eager professors of the Christian religion, which they preached without fear in their city of Brescia in Lombardy, during the persecution of Adrian.

They also performed works of Christian charity. They helped each other do good for the people who needed them. The bishop of Brescia made them both priests. They began to preach everywhere, to both the rich and the poor.

They spared themselves no sacrifice to bring many people to God. Because it was a time of persecution, it was easy to be afraid. But Faustinus and Jovita would not give in to fear of the soldiers even though these soldiers were actually putting many Christians to death.

They were preaching the Gospel fearlessly in the region when Julian, a pagan officer, arrested them. They were commanded to adore the sun, but replied that they adored the living God who created the sun to give light to the world.

The statue before which they were standing was brilliant and surrounded with golden rays. Saint Jovita, looking at it, cried out: "Yes, we adore the God reigning in heaven, who created the sun. And you, vain statue, turn black, to the shame of those who adore you!" At his word, it turned black. The Emperor commanded that it be cleaned, but the pagan priests had hardly begun to touch it when it fell into ashes.

They were left without food in a dark jail cell, but Angels brought them strength and joy for new combats. And no matter what the two priests suffered, they would not promise to stop preaching about Jesus. They kept an attitude of prayer even in that terrible prison. In fact, they willingly offered up their sufferings to the Lord.

The two brothers were sent to the amphitheater to be eaten by lions, but four lions came out and lay down at their feet. The flames of a huge fire did not burn them, and a large number of people who saw this were converted and became Christians at the sight.

Finally the Emperor ordered that they be beheaded, and they knelt down and received the death blow. The city of Brescia honors them as its chief patrons and treasures their relics (remains).

Reflection: Let us keep watch for opportunities to encourage and support our families in living out the Gospel.
