The Son of God

When the disciples returned after Jesus had sent them out to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and the cast out devils. He asked them two significant questions. One was, “Who do men say that I the Son of man am?” The other, “Who do you say that I Am?” The first they immediately answered, that the people thought that Jesus was a prophet like Jeremiah, John the Baptist or even Elijah. This showed how folks viewed of Jesus. Their knowledge of Him was limited to that of Old Testament prophetic ministry, and of course Jesus Christ is greater than a prophet. You Are The Christ, The Son of God

Then He directed the second question directly to them, “Who do you say that I the Son of man am?” They knew who He was. But when He asked them pointedly, a holy hush fell where they had gathered. No one dared to utter His true identity, except Peter. I imagine as Peter broke the silence, standing up in their midst and boldly declaring, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

Why was the answer to this question so imperative to Jesus? And why is it still vital today? Your answer to Christ’s question is more than a reply because you can only know it by revelation. When Peter confessed that He was the Christ. Jesus said, “Flesh and blood didn’t reveal it to you, but My Father in heaven did.” Did you know that everything hinges on us receiving revelation from the Father of who His Son is? Your revelation of Jesus determines your level of faith and your spiritual growth. This revelation will determine how you see everything in life, through the lens of who Christ is.

From the time I was but a child, I knew Jesus was Lord. When I became an adult, I new instinctively that he was also God.

You are so right about the importance of knowing Who Christ is.

Every heretical teaching begins with the misconception of Who Christ is.

I always tell new Christians to begin by reading the Gospel of John and 1John so they will learn from the beginning Who Christ is.

After that, the rest will fall into place as the Holy Spirit leads them.

Your answer to Christ’s question is more than a reply because you can only know it by revelation.

I understand what the author is trying to say ... but if this is meant to be a theological statement I think it missed the mark ... by a wide margin.

Anyone can claim to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Recall the confession of the Gerasene demoniac in Mark 5:7

“What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?

It is not really the knowledge of WHO Christ is that is important ... 85% of the country would acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. But 85% of the country is not living their lives as if His Lordship means anything to them.

The response of the individual is the more important soteriological question. Some will say, yes, Jesus is the Christ ... but I am going to live my life as I see fit. Others merely acknowledge His identity as they acknowledge the identity of George Washington ... yes, I believe he was the 1st President of the US.

"Repent and believe the gospel" is the call to a proper response ...

Acts 20:17-20

17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church.
18 And when they had come to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,

19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews;
20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Repentance, faith, Lordship ... this is the proper response to the knowledge of Jesus as the Christ.

True Biblical repentance evidences itself in godly sorry ... faith in His life, death, and resurrection. His perfect righteous life will be transferred to you, His death secured forgiveness of sins, and His resurrection is the promise that you too will be resurrected. Lordship is fairly simple to understand ... He is the master, we are the slaves ... we have no right to continue to live as we see fit.

2 Corinthians 5:15
and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

If you are ... what you were ... then you're not.
