Pat Robertson: Creationists 'Deaf, Dumb, and Blind'

by Brian Thomas, M.S. *

Television minister Pat Robertson said on the May 13 episode of CBN's 700 Club, "The truth is, you have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to think that this earth that we live in only has 6,000 years of existence."1 The eight staff doctorates at the Institute for Creation Research, and the many other biblical creation scientists who agree with their position, might like to know what they supposedly haven't heard, don't understand, and haven't seen.2

Robertson was responding to a letter that asked, "I've heard arguments from both sides of whether our Earth is 6,000 years old…Please explain further."1

But Pat's explanation sounded far more emotional than factual.

He said, "I think to deny the clear [geologic] record that's there before us makes us look silly." Of course the "us" refers to Christians in general, who, in Robertson's view, should accept millions of years as a scientific fact that geology has left in a "clear record."

Where in Earth's many rocks can we find this "record"? We may only have seen it in books that men wrote, not in rocks that carry no literal records. Do Earth layers really present as clear a "record" of millions of years as Robertson so assertively persuaded?

Robertson referred to an age of dinosaurs including a Jurassic Period, "radiocarbon dating," and oil as three icons representing millions of years. Good science refutes each.

How do you think he does it? (I don’t know.)

There comes a time when a man’s loved ones need to gently take his elbow and slowly lead him off the platform, for his own good.

This is a non issue—nowhere in scripture does it say how old we’re supposed to think the earth is.

Pat preaches prosperity theology, too.

I’ve been saying for years, Pat’s family needs to pull him aside and really force the issue of retirement.

There is a series of books titled "The Roadside Geology of [name your state]" and which explains and illustrates the geologic history of each of the United States. It explains the structural history of the state using readily accessible rock types and structures. I've read and learned quite a bit from the two volumes I've followed, stopping at highway cuts, etc. (Oregon and Arizona). It's a good way to get your hands on what you are being told. A good video from the "Story of the Earth" series deals with the deposition of gold deposits in California and Nevada. My Dad worked at the Empire Mine (Quartz vein deposit) near Grass Valley, CA and I worked for Carlin Gold (Newmont) in the submicroscopic gold deposits of the Carlin trend. The geology behind the two types of deposit are covered quite well. The concepts of plate tectonics and deep time are covered in this video.

Agreed. Although I might agree with Mr. Robertson on the age of the earth, as a “teacher” he should be more considerate of other Christians who have arrived at a different conclusion.

My wife is a young-earth Creationist and I am an old-earth Creationist that finds no reason that God couldn’t use any process he darn well chooses to create. My wife and I agree to disagree because this is not an fundamental element of the faith.

Exactly. Humans cannot even begin to fathom the greatness of our maker, the one and only God. I do not know if the Earth is 6,000 years old, 6 million years old, or 6 trillion years old. The only thing I do know is that this complex world did spontaneously combust and voila man was created. Only the hands of my God could have created this magnificent universe we live in and there may be many more thousands of universes. And my God sent his son to this Earth two thousand years ago so that I could be forgiven and someday live in the Kingdom of Heaven and then see the greatness of my God. And no one can convince me otherwise.

Pat is an old man. By the way, you do not have to believe in a young earth to be a person who rejects evolution and who affirms intelligent design.

Was there death before sin?
Did sin enter the world through one man?

If you allegorize sin, do you allegorize salvation?

Amen. ANd i think there might be a place, maybe even two, in the Bible where lessons are taught thru parable. Yet people think the 6,000 year figure (which as you noted doesn’t exist) HAS to be true.
