Pope: No-work Sundays good, not just for faithful
Washington Post ^ | July 5, 2014 | Associated Press

CAMPOBASSO, Italy — Pope Francis says abandoning the traditionally Christian practice of not working on Sundays isn’t such a good change. Francis on Saturday traveled to Molise, an agricultural region in the heart of southern Italy where unemployment is chronically high. While he said poor people need employment to have dignity, he disagreed with opening stores and other businesses on Sundays as a way to create jobs.m

There has been a long tradition of exceptions to the rule of no work on Sunday/Sabbath day. As always, some overplay the exceptions.

There is something peaceful in shutting everything down that can safely be shut down and just having a day of rest.

Should emergency rooms have a staff? Sure. There will probably be other exceptions like police, fire, EMS, etc.

And for many business owners, this really streamlines the time off chart. Everyone gets a day off without time chart juggling. Families get to count on something, and it enhances, thereby, family life. So, the bottom line here is that I agree with the Pope here.

And the Pope is simply quoting God.

FYI, the apostles were all Jews and so attended synagogue on Saturday and then held their agape meal on Sundays. Eventually this turned into the Mass as we know it today. Read Justin Martyr’s early accounts of these Sunday services.

Neither did I, but I grew up in the era of the one-income family where mom could shop on a weekday afternoon. Between taxes, inflation and expectations most families need (or think they need) two incomes to get by, so the only time available to get anything done is the weekend.

An excellent book put out by Ignatius Press, BTW.

I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on willful inactivity and the benefits thereof. To me, it just isn’t a reason to condemn because of some rigid sense of interpretation of scripture.

I was raised presbyterian and as a teen I questioned their doctrine.

After actually reading the Bible, I first questioned why at church we creepily droned/chanted , about things including believing in the catholic church.

Let’s not even go into all of the vain repetitions and prayers to idols.

Saturday is the Sabbath.

Say what you want about how it changed, who changed it, or why. Simple fact is unless the Bible spells it out in Gods words that the Sabbath has changed, It hasn’t.

I don’t go to church, so this isn’t bashing any denomination.

I will say though, I don’t like the wasted money in churches on expensive buildings and the like.

We need a Tea Party for churches to take us back to our faiths founding document...The Holy Bible.

So this was all I could find regarding such a homily at such a mass.

Nowhere do I find any of these comments.

I am amazed folks think Sunday is the Sabbath. They must have dusty Bibles.

My wife is working tomorrow as a Coronary Care nurse associated with the ER in a major medical center.

If you were to present there with a heart attack, she'd be the first person you'd see.

If you have a problem with this, my suggestion would be not to schedule your heart attack on any Sundays.

BTW We go to Mass Saturday evening.

I observe His calendar. the one with its template in Ezekiel 46:1..

His New Moons, Sabbaths and Feasts are only found using His sun, moon and stars..

Those new moons, Sabbaths and feasts all have significance to the major life events of the Messiah of Israel...

Saturn’s day is no different than Sun’s Day. It is still accepting the premise that the pope gregory calendar is then accurate way to tell time..

I don’t accept that premise..

Our Heavenly Father’s caleendar numbers days, not names them...

And His Sabbath can fall on any pope gregory calendar day because it uses all of His creation for His timekeeping- not just the Sun like the ancient sun worshippers did way back when- and still do today.
Nothing new under the sun...

Adventists, Jews, Muslims, Christians all can find their own sabbaths with the world’s calendar... and all of them use the pope as their guide..

Scripture tells of a different calendar that shows where His Sabbath is.. but you wont learn about it in church...

I grew up Pentacostal and my daddy would not strike a lick at a snake on Sunday. We also had blue laws all over the state and nothing was open on Sunday. Absolutely no alcohol sales. Even today there is no sale of booze until after morning church services, around 12 PM.

And He gave Israel His Calendar and they have abandoned it for calculated calendars..

Proof of this can be that they have postponement and suspension rules for His Feasts when they conflict with their pope gregory calendar mandated sabbath as they cannot have two Sabbaths in a row..

But that never happens on His calendar found in scripture...

Our Heavenly Father’s Calendar has no need for suspension or postponement rules..

Sun’s day was last His Sabbath on our heavenly Father’s calendar in gregorian february and now again for four week of gregorian july..

all the other months in between, there were other pope gregory days, like Tiw’s Day, Thor’s Day and Frig/Friya’s Day, that were Sabbaths on His timekeeping..

It is impossible not to work on a Sabbath if one never knows when His True Sabbath is...and no one working mon-fri has enough vacation/PTO time to observe His calendar and work in the world’s template...the two are that different..

And I certainly believe doctors and nurses are perfect examples of samaritans in scripture. and treating and caring for the sick is good on anyday, even the Sabbath...

But accepting the world’s calendar means accepting the world’s premises...

If our Heavenly Father’s calendar gets revealed to you, and you can then recognize how the entire world is deceived into a false premise as ‘innocent’ as ‘time’, then maybe more will reject the world for His Word..

Sun’s day hasn’t been a sabbath since gregorian february on His calendar..

jews, muslims and christians of all stripes can stumble into His Sabbath a few times in their year..

But that happens when a system uses one piece of His clock to determine time and date instead of everything He gives us.

"Pope Francis says abandoning the traditionally Christian practice of not working on Sundays isn’t such a good change"

Clearly God's laws have not changed, aand the Pope has not forgotten the 10 Commandments. What he means is society-wide, the whole society has abandoned what it traditionally observed, i.e. the "Honor the Lord's Day" commandment ---- even state offices and businesses/commercial outlets run by secular or non-Christian people.

And he doesn't think this society-wide abandment of our Christian traditions is a good thing.

I expect you'd agree.
