Vanity - Prayers for my daughter abroad
vanity | 25 July 2014 | ZinGirl

Posted on 07/25/2014 12:40:21 PM PDT by ZinGirl

Hi - I come to you humbly asking for your thoughts and prayers for our daughter. She just went abroad as she starts her Junior year from Gettysburg College and is in Melbourne, Australia. She has been there just over 2 weeks.

Things were going great until she called this morning to say she was in the ER because she hasn't felt well, has had a headache for 2 days, and feels like she has been hit by a truck.

Long story short, she is being treated for a bacterial infection and the hospital is bringing in infectious disease doctors. Her temp was 104. She is on antibiotics and feeling better...but we are so worried.

We live in Baltimore and I feel helpless. She is a great student and has made friends, two of which have stayed with her almost the whole time. The logistics are being handled thru an organization called Arcadia, and they have been tremendous, both in Australia and the US office.

We have a wonderful support system (family and friends) praying for her and have felt their prayers as my husband and I feel so helpless....but I would truly covet and be evergrateful if you feel led to pray for us and our daughter, Christina.

I apologize ahead of time if I can't respond personally....please know I will try. God bless you.

Hi, I don't really know how to update a thread, but I copied and pasted a few names of kind people who wanted updates. Hope that's what does it.

Just got a call from Australia and Christina's fever is coming back and she is feeling pretty crummy again. :( Her friend Jenny had called, as well as the student liason. I was able to speak to a nurse, but between accents and connections, I can only hope that she is getting the meds she needs (she needs hydrocortisone/solu-cortef/solu-medrol in some form for her disorder).

It is noon there, now, and they're already saying they're going to keep her another night. AFAIK, nothing is back which shows anything definite and it is 'fever of unknown origin' type of thing.

I forgot to ask if the infectious disease people had been there...but hopefully we'll get more news as their day goes on.

My daughter spent a semester abroad in Australia last year and my other daughter lives on the west coast and has a great many health issues so I can sympathize with your plight.

My prayers will definitely be up for you and her for peace and healing.

:( thank you. I wanted her to be better. Patience isn’t my strong suit. God is good...and SO knows what He is doing. He has blessed us immensely. One thing about a prayer thread...the blessings simply COVER the person!

We all told ourselves that this semester would go by quickly and she would be home in no time. *sigh* It has been just over two weeks....and they have been loooooong weeks. Now with her ill, I’m missing her so much. Thank you for understanding.

thank you, Blessed. I’ve seen that image on so many prayer threads......both honored and scared to see it again on one for my own daughter. “This, too, shall pass”...and I am so thankful for so many people praying. God bless you.

Dear ZinGirl, just received the ping and my heart goes out to you. I pray your daughter is surrounded by the light and love of our Lord and her she is healed fully.

My daughter was in Ecuador for a semester and also got sick, it was the worst week of my life. I am so very sorry you are going through this. I’m certain your daughter is in great hands and the prayers being sent are heard.

thank you so much. Everyone has been wonderfully supportive (no big surprise!). Yes, it has been a very long day...and as we go into a weekend, I’m figuring it is going to be a long few days. How did your daughter deal with being away from home when she was sick? Christina has been doing an amazing job enjoying the trip, but admits she misses home. Now that she is ill, I wonder how she is doing with that. Kids are resilient, I suppose.

Just got a call (just before 1:00am Baltimore time) from the student liason for Christina. He was able to talk to Christina (he's not allowed to discuss her with hospital personnel, unfortunately). GOOD NEWS!

He says she sounds much better, has finally been able to be put in a room, and even mentioned that she is hungry!

To his knowledge, nothing has come back positive through chest x-rays or bloodwork. He isn't sure what all tests they have done, although they did just swab her throat and/or nose. The infectious disease person was there and, apparently, nothing jumping out to alarm them yet.

Hubby and I are going to try to get some sleep....but I wanted to so deeply thank all of you for your prayers, thoughts, and warm wishes. We really do feel them. God bless you.

Here is hoping tomorrow I can post a 'she's discharged and better!' post!!

You are very welcome, and I will continue to say prayers for her and for you.

The worst part for my daughter was the language barrier. Though she is ‘fluent’ in Spanish, there is enough of a difference in the various regions so it was awfully challenging for her. The good news is that even with the sub standard care in Ecuador, she did fine. I believe it gave her a big boost in realizing that she was responsible for herself in that situation, and came out far stronger for it.

Your Christina has so many prayers sent up for her, I’m sure she misses her Mama at this time, but knows you are there in every way that truly matters.

I will watch for updates!
