It’s time to kneel down and pray for our nation

Posted on 26 June 2015 by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

The Supreme Court came down in favor of same-sex marriage today.  The Slip opinions are HERE.

Held: The Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State. Pp. 3–28.

[…] KENNEDY, J., delivered the opinion of the Court, in which GINSBURG, BREYER, SOTOMAYOR, and KAGAN, JJ., joined.

ROBERTS, C. J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which SCALIA and THOMAS, JJ., joined.

SCALIA, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which THOMAS, J., joined.

THOMAS, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which SCALIA, J., joined.

ALITO, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which SCALIA and THOMAS, JJ., joined.

There is no provision for any state which has its own laws limiting marriage to two sexes.  Thus, this is now the “law of the land” in all 50 states.

Who wins?  Not society.  Perhaps divorce lawyers.

It may be that this was as inevitable as the night which follows the day.  I had hoped not, but with only a little hope.

To all believers....are you among the righteous? Can God count you as righteous?

Tell me, as a baptized into the faith Christian, what is righteous in Gods eyes?

That's not a rhetorical or sarcastic question -- I'm being sincere.

A follower of Christ. Because of His death on the cross, we have been made righteous.

21 He made Him who aknew no sin to be bsin on our behalf, so that we might become the crighteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels (Isaiah 61:10) .

Did you see how the vote came down in the original post. I don’t understand you saying that all of them agreed.

My opinion is that- there is a group meeting held, to decide who will be “for and against.” The product is delivered to stir most of US to emotionalism, beyond any sense of reasonable acuity. Thus the bs continues, without any real interference, by US. If you take a good survey of this courts decisions, for the last 70 years, you will find a surprise. And the beat goes on...

God doesn’t care about nations. They are mere man-made constructs to Him.

The founders of the United States thought otherwise, didn’t they?

Didn’t they believe that God was blessing our nation?

How do you pray for a nation that has clearly abandoned God and His Word? Even to the extent of displaying its wickedness on the executive mansion with a display of rainbow lights? Our country has shaken its puny fist in God’s face. I’m serious - how do we pray for such a nation? That is exactly what I asked God in prayer tonight. How to pray for this nation, and that if it was too late for revival that He protect and nourish the remnant of His faithful until He comes for them.

Yes and yes, absolutely. Our Founders made a pact with God. That solemn vow is broken. We are adrift as a nation

There is no person who is or ever was righteous except for Christ.

When we put our faith in Him,we are clothed in Christ’s righteousness. It is credited to our account and God sees us as righteous as Christ because He sees us through the blood of Christ.

It’s an imputed righteousness, credited to our account.

Yes, we can do things that please God, but we cannot be rightous as we need to be nor can we ever be as righteous in this life as we want to be.

It sounds discouraging but it also forces us to trust in Him for our righteousness and we know that we can trust Him.

We pray for the people of this nation, that God would call out and save as many as possible before the end.

How do you pray for a nation that has clearly abandoned God and His Word?

We pray that the nation turns to God

Malachi 4:6"He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."

Ezekiel 36:26"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Most importantly: Revelation 3:20 ESV Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

We need to pray for a revival, men and women of good conscience united praying for all to turn to God.

Those are all prayers for the nation of Israel, not for the Gentile nation states. The reason we should pray for Gentile nation states is so that we, either natural branches of Israel, or wild branches grafted in, can lead peaceful lives in all godliness. We should not pledge our allegiance to Babylon, but rather to our true King. We are strangers and pilgrims on this earth, looking for a heavenly city. We survived the first Babylonian empire, the first Roman Empire, every other empire, and will survive the American Empire. The adversary tempted the Messiah by offering him all the kingdoms of this world. Patriotism can be an idol.

Yet still we should pray for the nation states under whose government we abide, and obey their laws as we are able, without compromising the holiness that would require martyrdom instead.

He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools. He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle. He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged. He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty. He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

Then love your neighbor and pray for him. Who is your neighbor? Jesus answered that one.

True. But not a "nation," other than Israel.

Or from Hosea:

“Come back to me with all your heart,
don’t let fear keep us apart.....
Long have I waited for your coming
Home to me and living deeply our new life.”

Not the actual Scripture, but the hymn follows it quite closely

Francis is too busy telling us to turn off our air conditioners.

This Pope’s priorities are seriously messed up.
