Claims that the atrocities of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have nothing to do with Islam are harming efforts to confront and combat extremism, the Archbishop of Canterbury has insisted.
Religious leaders of all varieties must stand up and take responsibility for the actions of extremists who profess to follow their faith, the Most Rev Justin Welby said.
He argued that unless people recognise and attempt to understand the motivation of terrorists they will never be able to combat their ideology effectively.
It follows calls from a series of high profile figures for people to avoid using the term Islamic State also known as ISIL, ISIS and Daesh because, they say, its murderous tactics go against Islamic teaching and that using the name could help legitimise the groups own propaganda.
But the Archbishop said that it was essential to recognise extremists religious motivation in order to get to grips with the problem.

His predecessor in office, Rowan Williams, was for establishing sharia law in the U.K., and said it was inevitable that sharia law would be integrated into the legal system of Great Britain.
Abp. Williams was a weirdoid. The CofE has some better primates, including Bishop N.T. Wright, and that Bishop of Durham from Nigeria or wherever it was. The CofE, surprisingly!, has some great people.
Who are you, and what have you done with the Archbishop of Canterbury?
It’s time to stop referring to the murderers as ISIL, it should be either ISIS and Daesh.
I agree. The point of ISIL is to delegitimize Israel. “Daesh” is accurate but probably unclear to the American reader.
I have the impression that Williams was the standard sort of left-wing flake that the English-speaking world has been putting in positions of power for the last thirty years or so, on the theory that having established cultural foundations is boring, and that the condition of strength and stability unfairly deprives up-and-coming writers of drama that can be turned to advantage as they climb their career ladders.
Yeah, pretty much. Or just a weirdoid, like I said.
Is is time to stop saying ISIL and call it ISIS. Only assh...ls call it ISIL.
Brokeback Mountain called, they want their liberals back.
ISIS is practicing Islam exactly as Mohammed did and as he instructed it to be practiced in their book.
Islam has never be peaceful.
It has always been about world domination by conquest and slavery.
Mad Mo made it so.
Letting Muslims say that fundamentalist Muslims acting per the words of the Koran and following the example of the religion’s founder “aren’t really Muslims” is the No True Scotsman fallacy.
And letting them do so lets them escape responsibility for confronting the violent part of the ideology and reform it, much less confront the violent people and rein them in instead of silently leaving them alone because they are more holy than the peaceful ones for spilling blood.
Wow! Another Trump effect blossoming?
It’s time to stop saying it has nothing to do with Saudi Arabian money flowing into the Clinton crime family’s pockets.
