Is Islam exceptional? And what does it mean for the future of Western democracy?
Brookings Edu ^ | 15 May 2018 | Shruti Godbole

In his book “Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle over Islam is Reshaping the World”, Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Shadi Hamid argues that Islam is exceptional in how it relates to law, governance and politics, and plays an outsized role in public life in the Arab world. He also posits that the hope that Islam will eventually undergo a reformation and secularise may be misplaced. This has implications for the future of not just West Asia but also Western democracy.

...Hamid uses Islamic exceptionalism in a value-neutral sense i.e. exceptionalism can be either good or bad, depending on its manifestation. Nevertheless, it is true that Islam has proved resistant to secularisation and is therefore exceptional.

Two factors that contribute to its exceptionalism relate to the founding moment of Islam and the nature of its main scripture, the Quran. History and theology matter and should be understood particularly in the context of Islam. Prophet Mohammad was not just a man of religion, but a politician, a state-builder and leader of a state. The Quran therefore addresses the socio-political context of that time as well as issues of governance, law, and order. Religion and politics are interwoven within the teachings of Islam. In contrast, Jesus Christ was a dissident against the state, and did not rule or hold territory. Therefore, the New Testament does not talk about governance.

The second factor relates to the Quran. Muslims believe that the Quran contains the word of God and is actually God’s speech. This can be one of the reasons why secularists have failed to gain traction in Muslim-majority contexts. Given the divine nature of the text, it is difficult to argue against the Prophetic model and convince believers of its inability to replicate itself in the modern era.

he is right:
  1. Islam is socio-political-religious. You cannot separate the religion from ruling. A mosque and state separation is not possible without destroying the core of Islam

  2. A "reform" only makes thing more fundamental - the Wahabbis in Saudia have already done this

  3. The antagonism between izlam and the secular world will only increase as they are the antithesis of each other. Where there is secularism, Izlam can only die and vice-versa.

as he points out

Islam was revealed to its followers in a pre-modern era, when Islam imbued an entire social, moral, political and religious architecture. It has proven difficult to adapt it to the modern nation-state era.

Islam is a cancer.

The time has come to eradicate it from the face of the planet.

It's not like it wasn't going to come up, often.

Islam is an evil cult, exceptional only in its violence.

Islam’s most fundamental principle negates this whole (positive light) argument.

The fundamental principle is this: SUBMISSION

There are 2 world views for Muslims:

Dar Al-Islam
Dar Al-Hareb

Dar Al-Islam means the entire planet is Muslim. That is the goal of this faith, to make sure everyone becomes a Muslim. This is a the perfect state of being for humanity. Everyone must be a Muslim, either by choice or FORCE (the sword, Jihad or by the sword (Hareb). This leads us to the next concept, Dar Al-Hareb...

Dar Al Hareb is an imperfect world, where not everyone has accepted Islam. The world is in flux, conflict, jihad and mayhem so that we can, eventually reach that perfect state, Dal Al-Islam.

Hareb is a sword or scimitar and that is exactly what appears on the Saudi flag. Living by the sword until we reach perfection.

Until then, it’s Dar Al-Hareb or Jihad, so...SUBMIT or die.

This is the true face of Islam so either study the Koran and convert or lock & load.

Right. Islam is exceptionally CRAPPY. It is fraught with cruelty of every sort, a lack of intellectual pondering and any rights for women. Take it and shove it up your favorite orifice.

Given this situation, the best solution, Hamid argues, is to accept Islam’s role in public life and accommodate different perspectives, even conservative ones, on the condition all stakeholders respect the democratic process and the constitution.

This is hamid's think-tanky conclusion. It is written in authentic frontier think-tankese. This is why think-tankers never solve any problems. Their idea of diplomacy is pie-meets-sky "coexist"-bumpersticker horse$hit.

Among themselves, they sound oh-so-educated. Out here in the real world, they sound utterly delusional.

Islam will never adapt, period.

Anyone who really wants to understand Islam from a political and theological perspective needs to read Walid Shoebat’s “God’s War on Terror.”

The last word that would describe Islam would be “exceptional”. A puss filled cancer sore would be as positive as one could get.
