Soros-Funded Mag Calls Catholics Neo-Nazis

Leftist editor fired after pulling anti-Catholic hate op-ed

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - A progressive, evangelical, Soros-funded magazine is fracturing after the editor-in-chief took down a factually incorrect op-ed accusing American Catholics of harboring "the most dangerous neo-Nazi groups in existence."

Spiritual adviser to former president Barack Obama and Sojourners' chief editor Jim Wallis was fired Aug. 14 for pulling the op-ed titled "The Catholic Church has a Visible White-Power Faction," written by Eric Martin, lecturer in religion at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Martin's piece was also published in the August print edition of the magazine under the headline "Harboring a Culture of Hate" but expunged from the website after a backlash from unnamed Catholic leaders.

The anti-Catholic op-ed accuses the U.S. bishops' conference (USCCB) of failing to condemn — in its 2018 pastoral letter against racism, "Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love" — the imagery of swastikas, Confederate flags and nooses.

"Catholics are among the most integral groups that rally behind these symbols. From the highest reaches of government to the lowest depths of social media, many members of hate groups and politicians who model their talking points are part of the bishops' flock," Martin alleged.

Defending 'Offending' Bishops

Academic John Zmirak, author of best-selling The Politically Incorrect Guide to Catholicism, told Church Militant that "in statement after statement, the U.S. bishops have adopted the Marxist definition of racism instead of the Christian one."

Zmirak explained:

Only members of the "powerful" group can be guilty of this sin. So black Muslims who hate Jews, black separatists who hate all whites ... they're off the hook. Conversely, any member of the "privileged" group, including jobless white coal miners, is guilty of benefiting from "systemic racism." Everyone taking part in this ludicrous.......

Jim Wallis didn’t first check with Kapo Soros to get the messaging correct.

every now and then the world gets bored of picking on the Jews for a second and pick on us Catholics. But then they go right back to picking on Jews.

But Muslims, they are angels.

An associate of Wallis named Robert P. Jones has been circulating this type of nonsense recently, promoting a book titled White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity where he makes the same claim about U.S. Christianity in general.

Also, Eric Martin marched with Antifa and Black Lives Matter at Unite the Right in Charlottesville. He's published a book on the Berrigan brothers, a pair of excommunicated Jesuits who supported terrorism against the United States during the Vietnam War, including a plot to bomb government buildings and kidnap public officials.

Support for Scholar-Activist Eric Martin (05/19/2018)

One of our Daily Theology guest contributors, Eric Martin was recently arrested in a nonviolent action to support students at the University of Virginia. Eric is a doctoral candidate in theology at Fordham University. He works closely with the Catholic Worker community and is committed to nonviolence and racial justice. . .

On April 25, Jason Kessler, the organizer of the August 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, entered the University of Virginia Law Library. The presence of Kessler upset staff and students. In August Kessler brought neo-Nazis to campus who beat students and employees with lit torches, and one week before he confronted students who appeared Jewish and told them Jews and women should not be at the law school.

Martin responded to a call a community leader and arrived to see 35-40 people staring at a private study space given to Kessler, apparently guarded by several police officers. . Several students told Martin they did not feel safe in the vicinity of a white supremacist who had already brought violence against students on campus. Martin watched students asking law school personnel why Kessler was allowed on campus and receiving no clear answers. He called the president’s office to ask whether the president was aware of the situation and the receptionist hung up on him before he could finish the question.

Distressed that over eight months had passed since the initial attacks and even after Kessler harassed students the university had taken no action except to give him police protection from the students, Martin decided to enter the room where Kessler was studying and read. Careful not to harass, annoy, touch, intimidate, mock, speak to, or even look at Kessler, Martin simply sat down and began reading The Rise and Fall of Apartheid (part of his dissertation research) across the table.

When ordered to leave by employees, Martin replied that they would have to decide who the threat at that table was, and that he would leave if Kessler were escorted out. Stephen Parr, the law school’s chief administrative officer, ordered police to arrest him, and he received the ban from campus that students had long demanded be given to Kessler, who continued to study in the office with police guard while Martin was cuffed and sent to jail. On April 27, Kessler received a 4-year ban for offenses predating this incident. Martin faces up to a year in jail for trespassing. . . .:

Update on August 14: Wallis has now written two longer statements on his retraction. On Aug. 10 he both apologizes to the article's author, while characterizing the article as "misleading and inflammatory." On Aug. 12 he maintains this while adding: "I now understand why pulling down the article was a mistake, as it damaged our journalistic integrity, betrayed the trust of our authors, and undermined our editorial team." On August 13, National Catholic Reporter published this article on the retraction and two editors of color subsequently resigning in protest. On August 14, Sojourners re-instated the article and replaced Wallis as editor.: Sojourners: Don’t hide bishops’ complicity in white supremacy
