Just before fighting his final disastrous battle on Mount Gilboa against the Philistines, King Saul, in disguise, asked the Witch of Endor to summon up the ghost of the prophet Samuel so that he could consult with him. In the ancient world, necromancy, or the summoning up of the ghosts of the dead, was frequently done by means of “ghost pits” dug into the ground. As will be seen, when the Witch of Endor summoned up the ghost of Samuel, she was using a ghost pit. The use of ghost pits was a common pagan practice in the ancient world.
Most English translations of 1 Samuel 28:7 have Saul sending his servants to find a woman who has a “familiar spirit.” However, the Hebrew word ob/ov, which is almost always translated into English as a “familiar spirit,” should be more properly translated as a “ghost pit.” Saul is sending his servants to find a “woman possessing a ghost pit.” Such ghost pits could not be dug just anywhere, but only at special, prescribed, sacred pagan sites.

Years ago I read a treatise on the witch of Endor, which stated that she was probably a fraud. And the reasoning behind that POV was that she conjured up an actual ghost and it scared the living daylights out of her.
An actual witch conjuring up a ghost wouldn’t have had that reaction to something that purportably was part of the trade craft.
I would liken it to modern day charlatans of “dark trades” who if they actually did conjure up a ghost, would probably s*** their pants.

I recall decades ago being struck by the similarities of witch of endor story and the greek story.
This is the first I’ve heard of the term ghost pit and its use throughout the ancient world.
The Bible is filled with stories indicating that allegiance to Satan does confer real powers upon his followers. Cruses, necromancy, and prophecy are very real in the Good Book.
Have these vanished from the world? Or are the enemies of Christ still using these occult powers in their struggle against us believers?

#2 question. Satan worship has increased into the public eye and churches have not taught how to discern spirits and cast them out. Worship portals have opened for occult powers without Christians casting them out in the Name of Jesus Christ. My hope...revival is making us aware of what Jesus wants us to know about Him and awakening our souls and spirits to win for Jesus and not satan.
We get to chose what kingdom we want to spend eternal life and thoughts of eternal should shake a lot of people!!!

Whether she collaborated with a demon or used trickery to decieve Saul about "Samuel's alleged ghost" is irrelevant
