Republican group wants Sanford to run [in 2012] [RLC]

Caucus says governor protects taxpayers.

BY ROBERT BEHRE

At least one faction of the Republican Party thinks South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford should run for president.

The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus passed a resolution encouraging Sanford to seek the office in 2012. It cited the way Sanford has voted his conscience on tough issues.

Dave Nalle, chairman of the California-based caucus, said: "In his two terms as governor of South Carolina, Sanford has shown independence and creativity and acted as a vigilant guardian of taxpayer interests."

The caucus is far from the highest profile organization within the GOP. It has no South Carolina chapter, and Charleston County Republican Chairwoman Lin Bennett said she has never heard of it.

"I guess they're like everyone else. No one wants to listen to Mark when he says, 'You know I don't want to run anymore,'" she said.

Sanford press secretary Joel Sawyer said Thursday he had not heard of the caucus' endorsement but said, "It's very kind and very flattering, but it's nothing he has any intention of doing."

The last thing the GOP needs is another candidate who has a half-hearted interest in running.

Any half-hearted GOP effort is not going to beat Obama, unless Obama is a complete wash-out.

Governor, you're a plain spoken person. Do us a favor. If you're not going to run for POTUS in 2012 or 2014, please say so. LOUDLY.

Don’t pay any attention to upchuck. He’s just a doofus. Obviously there will not be a presidential contest in 2014.

Sorry.

Isn’t that the paradox, though? The people with a half-hearted interest in running would probably be better in office — but they can’t get elected. The people who want the office badly enough to get elected can’t be trusted.

I tentatively like Sanford...but we need to focus on fielding liberty-minded candidates to take back Congress in 2010.

He should be our next president - so he needs to get his protestations of not running in now before he sets up his exploratory committee.

I’m worried there might not be one in 2012 (a la Venezuela).

I really like Sanford because he is a liberty-mided politician and he's fiscally ideal. He does have a goofy 'Green' streak within him, though, that I find put-off by. It's of no matter, though, after yesterday's revelations.

I whole-heartedtly agree. You might [and I hope others will, too] find this nearly 8 minute YouTube video interesting.

It won’t happen now, for the obvious reasons. It’s too bad. He could have been a great President.
