Navy wife makes desperate plea for missing husband with PTSD

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local Navy wife is desperate to find her missing husband, who has post traumatic stress disorder and hasn't been seen in days.

"My whole world is collapsing because this is the guy I was going to spend the rest of my life with," says Amanda Hamilton.

She and Nicholas married four and a half years ago and have two sons together. As a couple they've faced deployments, but the most recent deployment on the USS Ronald Reagan to provide humanitarian relief to Tsunami victims in Japan proved to be a tipping point, according to Amanda.

"He had a really bad flashback episode while on the Reagan," she says. Adding that flashback dealt with a previous humanitarian effort to retrieve bodies from the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia.

"He took nearly 200 over the counter medications to try and end his life," she says.

That was March 25th of this year and Amanda says Nic was then flown to an Air Force Base in Japan for treatment and then sent back home to San Diego for further treatment on March 31st.

Since then he's regularly checked in twice a day to a Medical Hold unit at the Navy hospital, according to his wife, until May 1st when things unraveled.

San Diego to Montana

I recieved the following e-mail from my daughter in law:

Hi All,

I know I sent this video to many of you, but below is also a link to the entire article about the story.
Nic and Amanda are our best friends and we are the Godparents of their two boys. We're just trying to get the word out to as many people as we can that Nic is missing. He is very sick and needs treatment ASAP. Your watchful eyes and prayers for his swift return home are appreciated.
Love,

Nick served on board the USS Lincoln during the Iraq war and stood next to my son on the flight deck to hear President Bush as he welcomed the crew home.

Nick is obviously very troubled and in need of help, which he is running away from.

I have spoken to my son, he suspects that Nick is headed home, (Montana), from the base in San Diego.

Nick has very little cash (if any) and may be hitchiking.

I hope you will all forgive this vanity, but if anyone sees something, please advise and I can forward the info to my son.

Thanks for the help.

Regards
michaelsf

We ask so much of these young people...

Prayers up for Nic’s safe return and for his healing; his spirit.

She adds that her husband has given ten years of his life to the Navy and it's time the Navy help him.

Sounds like they were helping him, until he ran away. What else can the Navy do?

I will say a prayer for Nic, Amanda and their two children for their father’s safe return. May he be healed.

She is obviously distraught. The Navy has done all they can do and he is running away from help.

I am not disagreeing with you, nor can I answer the question myself, rather I hope the focus will be on helping find him, and not side issues.

Maybe they'll do a re-make.

I will be praying for him as well.

Did he at least have antipsychotics for the flashbacks when he left?

I should have posted an update to all.

Earlier this week, Nick was found. Friends played a hunch as to where he might be and were periodically checking those locations that they thought he might frequent. The hunch proved justified, as he turned up at one such location, while it was under friendly surveillance. He was approached and was easily convinced to go with them to the hospital.

My son met with Nick yesterday morning and reported that he seemed "like the Nick he always knew" and not like the guy described by his wife last week.

He is now in rehab and is getting the care that he needs.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers.
