HANNITY: As we continue, on HANNITY AND COLMES, I'm Sean Hannity.Still to come tonight, when Congress convenes in January, immigration reforms looks like it's going to be, well, a very big fight in Washington. Is this country ready to extend amnesty to even some illegal immigrants? We're going to have the very latest on that.

But first, earlier this week, a panel of journalists at the National Press Club were asked to discuss the implication of last week's election. Let's take a look at what ABC News senior correspondent, Carole Simpson, said about the states that voted for President Bush, or the so-called red states.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CAROLE SIMPSON, ABC NEWS SENIOR CORRESPONDENT: When you tell me, let the states decide, that scares me, OK? I've got a little map here of pre- Civil War, free versus slave states.

I wish you could see it in color and large, but if you look at it, the red states are all down in the South, and you have the Nebraska territories, the New Mexico territories, and the Kansas territories, but the Pacific Northwest and California were not slave states. The Northeast was not.

It looks like the map of 2004. And when you say, Let's let the states decide, I remember what the states decided when they had slavery.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HANNITY: So is this the way the blue media looks at red America?

Joining us now, former CBS News correspondent, author of the best- selling books Bias and Arrogance, -- which is now out in paperback, by the way -- Bernie Goldberg.

Bernie, I think you can read my mind how I feel about this. What are your thoughts?

BERNIE GOLDBERG, AUTHOR OF BIAS : Well, you know what? I think you're going to be surprised. I think we owe Carole Simpson a debt of gratitude. I think we really need to thank her, because normally, this kind of smug condescension towards middle Americans, towards red state Americans, is what the media elites talk about at their fancy cocktail parties in Manhattan and Georgetown and Washington and in the Hamptons.

It's rare that a correspondent, who ought to be more concerned about her career, actually is so reckless as to share it with the whole world. But make no mistake, Sean, this is the kind of thinking, the kind of condescension, that the media elites have towards middle Americans all the time. They just keep it secret.

HANNITY: Yes, I've got to tell you, it is stunning to me. And Zell Miller talked a lot about this in his book, A National Party No More, how it is clear, and the comments by the Maureen Dowds, and Carl Bernsteins, and the Sidney Blumenthals, and in this case Carole Simpson, prove more than ever they do not know the people of this country.

They do not know the people in flyover country, in the South, the people that are the backbone of this country, the people that love God and faith and family and country. Bernie, it is insulting.

But more importantly here, this all part -- we learned in this election how the media didn't ask John Kerry a tough question, and how they did everything, vis a vis 60 MINUTES and The New York Times, to help him win. But the media no longer has a monopoly. It's over for them. Am I wrong?

GOLDBERG: No, you're absolutely right.

Tom Wolfe, one of the two or three, maybe four, best journalists of our generation, said just a couple of days ago, that the people in the East, the cultural elites, don't have a clue as to what ordinary Americans are about. Don't have a clue.

One of the reasons -- one of the reasons the Democrats lost, one of the reasons, is because they don't understand middle Americans, that they think they're stupid, that they think they're hicks who live in flyover country, all these things.

At least, that's the perception of the people in the red states. Well, that's also the perception of the people in the red states about the media elites. You know, the only thing that's different about the media elites from the Democrats is the media elites are even bluer than most Democrats.

HANNITY: Which is a frightening thought. But it's sad that they

they need to go out and meet these people, because these are the people that produce the goods and the services and run the economy and make the trains run on time and make this country great. These are the people that show up at church every Sunday. These are the people that are instilling good values in their kids. They don't know these people.

GOLDBERG: The Democrats, Sean, won't win elections -- I mean, they may win one or two if the economy is terrible or whatever, but they won't win elections until they do understand that.

COLMES: Hey, Bernie...

GOLDBERG: But the media elites are losing elections every day. You know, the Nielsens come out every day, and they're losing elections every day, because of their separation from ordinary America.

COLMES: Bernie, it's Alan.

Let me begin by where we agree, which is unusual when you're on the program, but I agree that what Carole Simpson said is outrageous, and the idea that we should compare the red states of today to what those states, some of them, may have stood for in 1864, is outrageous to me and no Democrat should buy into this idea that that's what red state America means today. That's no way to win elections, and it's no way to show respect for, as Sean says, the many hardworking people who make this country tick. So I think we agree on that.

GOLDBERG: Right.

COLMES: I think a larger point...

(CROSSTALK)

COLMES: Well, I just think that Carole was making -- look at the totality of what she said. She was making a larger point about states rights versus federal rights, and where sometimes certain issues are best decided on the federal level versus the state level. Go ahead.

GOLDBERG: But on this matter, we're talking about an election. And she said, she said, she looked at the map at one point -- we didn't show this clip -- but she looked at the map and she said, Look at this map. What are we supposed to make of this?

Well, the answer's easy. We're supposed to make...

(CROSSTALK)

COLMES: You can't look at those red states monolithically. There are lots of blue people and blue counties in those red states. There are many Democrats in those red states, just like in the blue states, there are many people who are very much like what you said, and Sean said, the backbone, who make the trains run on time. Those people exist in both of those kinds of states, don't they?

GOLDBERG: Absolutely, but don't take that up to me. Take that up with her. I'm not the one who went to this conference and said these ridiculous things. Carole Simpson is the one.

And, by the way, I don't see the president of ABC News, who is always going around making high-brow speeches about what journalism ought to be, I don't see him saying anything about this. He ought to be ashamed that a senior correspondent...

(CROSSTALK)

COLMES: She also said, and I agree with this, words like gay, affirmative action, liberal, diversity are often made bad words today. That's another statement she made, and they're often demonized. I think the word liberal has been demonized very effectively by the right. They hear the words diversity, and that becomes a negative word. And those are some of other comments she made, of which I happen to be more in agreement. Do you disagree with that?

GOLDBERG: Well, no. Because I think most Americans in blue states and most Americans in red states, they don't want to see any harm come to gay people, to use one example. They may be against gay marriage, but your guest Pat Caddell just told you that just about everybody was against gay marriage.

So, no. I think she is a good example of the media elites who caricature, they make fun-house mirror images of people who live in red state America, and red state America is fed up with it.

HANNITY: Bernie, with Bias and Arrogance, you're way ahead of your time. I think now you got a third book in you there somewhere. But we'll be waiting for it, too.

Thanks, Bernie. We appreciate it. We check in now with Greta Van Susteren who's standing by for a sneak peak at what's coming on when she goes ON THE RECORD from Redwood City, once again in California tonight, and 21 minutes from now -- Greta?

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: Sean, believe it or not, we are hearing rumblings there may be more jury problems confronting us tomorrow. We have the latest on that.

Plus, we took a road trip today to a grisly crime scene and did a walk-around with the police chief. We have that, plus, live to Fallujah, where we are following the attack on Fallujah. That, and much more. Back to you.

HANNITY: ON THE RECORD, coming up right after HANNITY AND COLMES.

And coming up next, not so fast, Howard Dean. Another liberal may want to be the chairman of the Democratic Party. We'll tell you who it is.

And immigration reform is back on the table. Some conservatives are upset about it, and who are they mad at? It may shock you. Straight ahead.

I read about this, but, when I heard the words last night, let me tell you, bring it on. You want to refer to the red states *ME* well as I said bring it on cuz you have not seen folks mad in the heartland until you reach the depth of where you have gone, Ms Simpson!

I agree with Goldberg. Best that the hatred and bias of the media are exposed for all to see.

Oh, hearing it definitely was priceless. She was whining and hyperventilating: "They don't watch the nuuuuuuuz. They're so stupid. Their parents listen to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. I'm scaaaaaaared!"

Best entertainment next to Jane Smiley's screed. Truly, truly unhinged.

Notice she lumps West Virginia in there. Apparently, she doesn't know history since Viginia split in two over slavery. WV became a conduit for the underground railway.

Ohio is red. I wonder if she has visited Gettysburg and paid homage to all those Ohio regiments, those who died in the service of the Union.

Simpson is an idiot.

OMG...these folks REALLY DO think this way. Carole Simpson is showing her deep ignorance. She sweeps her hand and accuses millions of Americans of ugly racism.

We're beginning to see the real window the media looks through.

Hey, Carole, Dubya won the popular vote, too.

Just exactly what is it that you want?

They call her a senior correspondant because she's an affirmative action hire who's been around for a while. She's still just a talking head. You don't learn anything sitting in front of a camera. If you don't have it already ("it" being experience and good judgement), you never get it once you're "ON THE AIR". Witness Keith Olbermann, Juan Williams, and EXHIBIT A, Dan Rather. They might be OK with a script to read from, but ask them to think and it's a high wire act witout a net.

It was priceless. But, am I missing something where is the outrage from the other media outlets taking her to task for her irresponsible remarks.

Had I not heard about it on Hannity I would not have heard anything at all. I did do a search and google brought me to FR of all places! I say that with a smile.

They do not get it, and, they have no accountability.

Evidently they do think this way and for the life of me, why do they get away with it. Frankly if there is so much red out there we should be able to oh I do not know, over throw the MSM. It seems it would be easy.

There is just no accountability anymore.

I think Ms Simpson needs a refresher on history. The Nebraska Territories were never slave states. When the Kansas Nebraska act was passed, the slave holders all flooded in to Kansas because they knew that Nebraska was much to much in the Free state column to make any difference.

Nebraska Territories were part of the original Blue States (as in Union Blue).

We should remember that this is the same Carole Simpson, when she landed an exclusive interview with then President Clinton, ask him as the first question, "Well, how does it feel to be interviewed by me?".

Need I say more?
