US captures treasure trove of Pasdaran documents. Iran playing both sides. Will US respond?

WASHINGTON — Iran is supporting both Sunni and Shiite terrorists in the Iraqi civil war, according to secret Iranian documents captured by Americans in Iraq.

The news that American forces had captured Iranians in Iraq was widely reported last month, but less well known is that the Iranians were carrying documents that offered Americans insight into Iranian activities in Iraq.

An American intelligence official said the new material, which has been authenticated within the intelligence community, confirms "that Iran is working closely with both the Shiite militias and Sunni Jihadist groups." The source was careful to stress that the Iranian plans do not extend to cooperation with Baathist groups fighting the government in Baghdad, and said the documents rather show how the Quds Force — the arm of Iran's revolutionary guard that supports Shiite Hezbollah, Sunni Hamas, and Shiite death squads — is working with individuals affiliated with Al Qaeda in Iraq and Ansar al-Sunna.

Another American official who has seen the summaries of the reporting affiliated with the arrests said it comprised a "smoking gun." "We found plans for attacks, phone numbers affiliated with Sunni bad guys, a lot of things that filled in the blanks on what these guys are up to," the official said.

Who would have thunk it? Iran is supporting the Shiites AND the Sunnis and the Pasdaran DOES cooperate with Al Qaeda. But, but all the "experts" like Jim Baker and the NYT have told us that Shiites and Sunnis are bitter enemies and that Iran would NEVER work with Al Qaeda. Whoops!

If Bush doesn't do anything about this and the administration doesn't trumpet this and tell the public and mobilize opinion, I give up.

Also, don't forget that it was the NYT and the APO that leaked the info about the captured Pasdaran in the first place. So all those Sunni bad guys and AQ types got the alert and may have been able to boogie before we could get them.

Thanks Bill Keller, you're a great American.

He and the rest of the Times board and staff should spend the next 40 years playing chess with Rick Ammes.

Even many on "our" side have fallen for that trap.

"Iran and Al-Qaeda would NEEEEEEEEVER Cooperate, cut they are Shia and the other Sunni!" or also
"Saddam was secular! He'D never have suported Al-Qaeda!"

Bullcrap.
All factions are choosing their friends and targets only for their machiavellian benefit. The Sunni-Shia thing is something religios being played-up to keep illiterate sheeple on their masters side.

The Islamic Regime of Iran HAS to be punished severly for their crimes and savageries committed against the Iraqi, Israeli and American people.

The more they kill each other the more grief for us.

They'd like nothing more than start a civil war in Iraq.

The sad thing is many Iraqis are playing their part of the Iranian script towards their own destruction.

Besides the playbook...we got the Quds commander also.

The top Quds Force commander — known as Chizari, according to a December 30 story in the Washington Post — was captured inside a compound belonging to Abdul Aziz Hakim,

Good point you brought up. He handed them over to Iran. Yep, Iran. The Sunni "secular" Baathist handed his Airforce over to the Shia "religious" Theocrats. But we are told today that never ever those contradicting postions would ever support, or cooperate, with each other.

BTW Iran is STILL keeping those Planes. The new Iraq has repeatedly requested Iran to give them back, but with no success.

What's taken John McCain so long to come out and insist he get's a lawyer and 3 squares a day?

Seriously, though, this is great news, but it won't matter if Bush doesn't frame the debate and tell the public.

If he went on TV tonight and announced that the US had captured a high ranking commander of Iranian Special Forces who was their connection with Al Qaeda and the insurgents in Iraq, along with all the documents and information he was carrying, and that he is currnetly being interrogated and the US will be using this information accordingly, his approval ratings would jump at least 10 points overnight.

The public needs to be involved and needs to hear good news.

This is like capturing Otto Skorzeny or Yamamoto. This guy Chizzari, being the Pasdaran's man in Baghdad is undoubtedly extremely plugged in. It's almost as good as having AHmadinejad or Khameini himself.

Why does the administration just let this stuff go unnoticed and not the news out there?

Bush, or someone else, should be on TV tonight. Clinton or Reagan would. They knew to use the media to their advantage. Bush doesn't. Unfortunately.

Iran is replaying the Iran-Iraq war, only this time, they're the US.

Look at this quote, from December 2002: “If the Americans dared to land in Iraq, they will be dragged in quagmire because the Americans have no experience in ground battle. ... A new laboratory for modern warfare is looming in our neighborhood Iraq” The source? Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former President of Iran. You know, the same Iran that’s been interfering in Iraq...

Cheers!

Ironically, Rafsanjani is the same guy that the libs and even some conservatives are trumpeting as the moderate alternative to Ahmadinejad.

What a farce

To do so would require a response. Action. A stern missive. Anything but nothing. Clearly, the Administration would like to keep this all quiet, and hope it goes away.

True, but I have the suspicion that these recent arrests/raids against Iranians, which uncovered the intelligence, are part of a "smoking gun" built-up. I'm confident we could have done the same things a year ago. Something is in the works regarding Iran.

If that's the case, then I hope they go away, and soon.

If Hillary or Obama or whoever gave a press conference about this and outflanked Bush from the right, they might lock up the WH.

It'd be like JFK with the Missile Gap and Nixon.

Not only this incident but, many others. It's as though this administration is too busy some where else and, that all Americans should know this information on their own.

I agree with your post in that any other administration would use this information for their advantage. That being said, the White House says the president doesn't govern by polls, i'm guessing this statement proves that point.
