US captures treasure trove of Pasdaran documents. Iran playing both sides. Will US respond?

WASHINGTON — Iran is supporting both Sunni and Shiite terrorists in the Iraqi civil war, according to secret Iranian documents captured by Americans in Iraq.

The news that American forces had captured Iranians in Iraq was widely reported last month, but less well known is that the Iranians were carrying documents that offered Americans insight into Iranian activities in Iraq.

An American intelligence official said the new material, which has been authenticated within the intelligence community, confirms "that Iran is working closely with both the Shiite militias and Sunni Jihadist groups." The source was careful to stress that the Iranian plans do not extend to cooperation with Baathist groups fighting the government in Baghdad, and said the documents rather show how the Quds Force — the arm of Iran's revolutionary guard that supports Shiite Hezbollah, Sunni Hamas, and Shiite death squads — is working with individuals affiliated with Al Qaeda in Iraq and Ansar al-Sunna.

Another American official who has seen the summaries of the reporting affiliated with the arrests said it comprised a "smoking gun." "We found plans for attacks, phone numbers affiliated with Sunni bad guys, a lot of things that filled in the blanks on what these guys are up to," the official said.

...I mean really...just how likely is it that "13 Iranian tour busses collided with one fuel tanker" a couple years ago near Balochistan, "incinerating all aboard"?

;-)

I would seem, after all this time, knowing about the IEDs and the Iranian technicians in Iraq, that we would begin the process of destabilizing Iran, at least it's government. If you have an insurgency supported by an unpopular regime right next door, it would seem obvious that it would be better keeping them busy fomenting unrest and outright assasination of its ruling elite, and destruction of their refining capacity. We're giving them the luxury of sending their bad guys into Iraq, rather than keeping them busy at home. We don't need a smoking gun in war. The longer we wait, the longer the MSM has to effect policy.

I definitely see where you are coming from, and agree. Been wondering about that incident since it occurred, and that news immediately dropped off the radar.

If Bush doesn't do anything about this and the administration doesn't trumpet this and tell the public and mobilize opinion, I give up.

Don't hold your breath.

I long ago ceased depending on W to do the right thing. We just trudge on, and advocate for the RIGHT thing to be done...irrespective of his waffling and weakness.

Iran fits the profile to a "T" right down to directly targeting American troops and our allies. And we are not threatening a military response (so far).

Agreed. That's my observation.

I just pray that Arnaud De Borchgrave is right...and we are going to see action...long past due...

Thanks Bill Keller, you're a great American.

He and the rest of the Times board and staff should spend the next 40 10,000 years playing chess with Rick Ames Saddam Hussein.

Fixed it for you.

"One example of a mindset that may hinder analysis of Iranian involvement is the belief that Iran would never have any dealings with militant Sunni Arabs. But they allowed hundreds of Al Qaeda operatives to escape from Afghanistan across their territory in 2002," he said.

It was reported years ago that Iranian-sponsored Hezbollah cooperated with Al Qaeda to do the El Khobar barracks bombing. It takes sooooo long for reality to penetrate through to these people.

This does make one wonder, though, if Osama is safe in Iran and the whole Waziristan thing is a wild goose chase.

Excellent if we now have solid proof of this, but my understanding is that we've effectively known this for some time. What more it's also been my understanding (since well before 9-11) that the Iranians have followed this same pattern previously and elsewhere. E.g. I believe that in Saudi Arabia they have supported both Shia murdering Sunni terrorists, and Shia groups as well.

You get the maximum murder, mayhem, disruption and destruction by supporting both "sides" (to the extent nihilistic thugs have "sides") and that's what the Mad Mullahs seem to be all about. Not that the average Arab will give a second thought to their blood-soaked cynicism, being too busy hating George Bush and inventing Jooooooish Conspiracies.

You just believe that because you're a conservative Neanderthal. If you were a sophisticated liberal you'd know that Sunni and Shia terrorists hate each other and never, ever cooperate or coordinate. Ditto terrorists of any stripe and secular dictators. If you encounter evidence to the contrary you must learn to employ "nuance". This is achieved by clasping your hands over your eyes and shouting, "LA-LA-LA-LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

"Nuance" Isn't that French for "did you know I served in Vietnam"?

So far the Bush administration has worked just as hard as the MSM to avoid reporting a lot of favorable news. It seems to be in the same mode as Republicans covering up Democrat scandals like Sandy Berger.

Punishment is irrelevant except as it serves to abort the worldwide Jihad. What is necessary is to neutralize the center of the Islamic Revival/Jihad NOW which means to waste Iran. Mohammedans must come to realize that Allah does not will for Islam to prevail in this generation.
