Recent Changes - Problem Thread I

Posted on 09/30/2001 2:59:33 AM PDT by John Robinson

Many technical changes are taking place here at Free Republic. While these changes are taking place, I will run a "Recent Changes - Problem Thread". The purpose of this thread is to document problems, bugs, and general difficulty which may be related to these changes. Comments and criticism are expressly welcome.

"More distinction between posting a reply and sending a private reply."

Why not make the links different colors (or fonts)?

...

I noticed that the blockquote wrapper seems to have fluttered on and off and on and now seems consistently off. Will this be its permanent condition?

... Misc. Requests:

It would be nice to be able to edit a post after it's sent. Failing that, it would be nice to be able to delete a post (one's own post, not posts of others).

...

Larger message composition boxes. Hard to shoehorn stuff through a keyhole. (ex post facto mixed metaphor alert:))

Both Netscape and MSIE have various (different) issues with blockquotes. Blockquotes are gone for good. The functionality will be replaced with either a table or style sheet margin.

However, neither of those are as clean as the blockquote method. Blockquotes allowed long lines of text and wide images to fall outside the right margin without affecting the rest of the contained text. Both tables and margins (on a div tag) stretch the right margin to the widest element in the content. This requires horizontal scrolling if the right margin falls outside the width of the browser window. Horizontal scrolling sucks!

Can't you make a table max (horiz) out at a percentage of browser width? (I feel very silly because I wrote a book on some of this stuff but I've gotten very rusty since then, and the "language" has taken off quite a bit as time passed.)

I remember running into similar issues when trying to prettify some ebay listings (using Frontpage), and IIRC the solution was to set the left column to a fixed width, and the right column to a percentage of the remaining width. In the FR context there wouldn't need to be the left column (I just note it because it drove me crazy trying to balance the two, prevent the left one (which had the photo) from resizing, and prevent the right column from getting a horiz scrollbar, which as you pointed out, sucks.)

I need some help, I'm trying to find an article regarding "bump lists". This particular article listed a great number of bump lists currently being used on Free Republic. I can't remember the title, poster, or even when I last saw it. Anybody happen to have any of this handy?
Askel- you have a good collection of bump lists. Have any ideas where I could find this list? Thanks.

YES! More space -- lots of it -- between PREVIEW and POST buttons. I see you just did that while I was trying to post this. ;-)

How many letters will we be able to fit on the "TO" line? (I was going to type "How many characters ... " but I know I'd get some pretty interesting replies.)

Currently only 100 characters will fit in the to line. However, that will change to an unlimited amount a couple weeks after I have a good list of bump lists in the register.

Speaking of which, consider this post introducing the Free Republic "bump list" register. Nothing in it as of this posting, haven't found any lists!

Thanks for the update. I thought maybe style sheets were totally gone. Sorry to lose the blockquotes, but I reckon we can still personalize one ?

As for the buttons on the reply page, can you use onLoad JS to disable the function of the button until the page is entirely loaded?

I wrote some games and puzzle pages years ago that I had to seriously debug so I know where ya are. Between trying to stick to HTML, JS, CSS, and DOM standards, while trying to handle the idiosyncracies of IE and NS, I had to dig deep into the specs. It was fun :-)

btw, if you don't already have it, I recommend Dynamic HTML - The Definitive Reference from O'Reilly ... great reference book.

calpowercrisis = articles related to the technical, political and financial aspects of the energy situation in California.

calpowergate - articles related to the ethical conflict inherent in California politicans and energy regulators having financial interests in the companies they regulate. A sub-category of calpowercrisis list.

Say, I tried the <SPAN CLASS="hi"> a little while ago, and it didn't seem to work. Do I need to create a style sheet first? I am using NutScrape 4.08.

Thanks for the info.

Right now there is no default style sheet. I still need to write one. If you wish, you can define a "hi" class in your style sheet for highlighting.

I will have a default style sheet within a few days I'm pretty sure.

Can "low class" no-account trailer trash like me be allowed to define a "hi class"? It doesn't seem wise...

Then OTOH, we do have a large "high" class here on FR.

Man...I need more coffee!

Thanks. I think I own every O'Reilly book. I'm sure I have that one, if not in print then on CD (love those CD bookshelves.)

I could use JavaScript, however, I want to use JavaScript only as an enhancement, not a requirement. This problem is a borderline case. The new forum has a better way of handling the posting form anyway, so I probably won't spend too much time on this old stuff.

Footnote: most of the recent changes are either to facilitate conversion from the old forum to the new forum, or as technology tests. New forum should be ready for a public beta test late Oct or Nov.

YOU SURE DO A BANG UP JOB. MUCH THANKS.

Perhaps it would do making "if the clutter's worth it" a toggle switch issue so folk could tailor some features to their preferences?

THANKS FOR YOUR LABORS!

First, thanks, John for all you do to make this a wonderful place! Shoot, I even liked the blockquote replies you had going. :D

Now my question.... will the self-search be refined so that I will be able to retrieve only MY replies and flags and not those of everyone named "chaIRMAn"?

I love the chaIRMAn, but he's an awfully popular guy in the mornings when he posts his "America the Right Way" threads making my self-search function practically useless.

Thanks!
