"I suspect there will be notable civilian interaction with fed and local authorities."

The purpose of the Auxiliary is to assist the Coast Guard as authorized by the Commandant in performing any Coast Guard function, power, duty, role, mission, or operation authorized by law.

In addition, legislation expanded the Commandant's authority to use the Auxiliary to assist other federal agencies, state authorities, and local governments in areas other than recreational boating safety.

This is where I will be.

"I think A Navy Vet is perhaps helping Tom Ridge and is ahead of the curve."

Only because YOU got me thinking about it with info on the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Have the duty this weekend. It seems I may be asked to augment the Coast Guard recruiting efforts (was USNR recruiter), as well as Long Beach/LA Harbor patrol. Fair seas, shipmate.

Happy Birthday US Navy!

On Friday, October 13, 1775, meeting in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept
transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America.

This was the original legislation out of which the Continental Navy grew
and as such constitutes the birth certificate of the Navy.

Just returned from Coast Guard Auxiliary meeting. Word is that the CG is going to be needing and utilizing the Auxiliary more and more. There are currently not enough crewmen nor coxswains to man the patrols, especially in the larger ports and harbors. Folks reading this should be aware there are CG Auxiliaries which patrol lakes and rivers, also. This is a direct way to assist in our Homeland Defence.

Please check out the Public Information Pages at the Coast Guard Auxiliary for a local Flotilla near you. You needn't have a boat or military background, and it's easy to join. Minimum age is 17 (no top limit). Thank you.

I talked to the Flotilla Commander on Fri, he just got approvals on some applications
that were turned in a few days ahead of mine so my "official" OK should be any day now.
I'm a radio talk show addict and regularly get thru on state and national radio shows
and one of my many "mini messages" plugs for the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

As I now understand it, once you fulfill your Basic Qualification (no sweat) and interview, you can take the oath and begin the Boating Skills and Seamanship course to qualify as a Boat Crewmember. If you don't want to wait for the next training session, the BS&S is on the CG and CGAUX websites and you just schedule an exam with your Training Officer. Been told you must have your Flotilla Number (official member) before you can download the BS&S course. My Flotilla will also allow OJT during patrols (I'm being scheduled for a midwatch in Long Beach) while studying the BS&S. Most of this stuff we'll sail right thru (pun intended).

BTW, what was your rating on your old tin can? I was both brown and black shoe during my 11 years.

I was GMG3 (passed GMG2 but would have had to extend enlistment 30 more days to accept it, the 1 year from time of rank rule, chose not to since I was a "kiddie cruiser", i.e. enlist at 17, get out 1 day before 21st bithday)
Some old pics of me from the Navy
PS I stood many a helmsman watch and could steer a ship with the best of them,
knew how to do that before I ever learned how to drive a car. LOL

PS No one up here allowed in Coast Guard Auxiliary meetings on base without Coast Guard Auxiliary photo ID,
but Tue AM I am going to a breakfast meeting at a restaurant with members.
