Vanity: Physicist and Mrs. Physicist Had a Son Today
Mrs. Physicist, with my invaluable assistance | November 16, 2001 | self

Posted on 11/16/2001 7:40:05 PM PST by Physicist

I am pleased--irrationally exuberant, in fact--to announce the birth of my son today.

Jacob David Sterner was born by caesarean section at 1:41 PM EST today at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, PA. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz., and was 19.25 inches long. Jake and Mrs. Physicist came through the process in excellent health.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Mark Finnegan, who delivered our daughters Emily and Molly, also at Riddle, in 1995 and 1997, respectively.

Here is a bigger picture of Jake.

Here I am holding my boy.

To take this post into the stratosphere of vanity, I will inflict upon you a valedictory sonnet, which I penned today:

ATLAS

Jacob David Sterner, start your life!
Knight errant, leave the fortress of the womb,
Your country's been attacked, and all is strife,
Ten patriots exhort you from the tomb.

The fashion of the day is ignorance,
You'll have to think and learn, despite the japes,
And cover for your neighbor's indolence,
Your sweat will feed and clothe ungrateful apes.

Your father has affrontery enough,
To ask so much of one boy at his birth,
But know that you are made of Sterner stuff:
Your shoulders can accomodate the Earth.

To sire you was my duty, dearest son:
The world needs such a man as you'll become.

(The line about "ten patriots" refers to his ten ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War.)

WOW! Physicist, I'm so happy for you & the Mrs.!

Just our latest experiment in applied evolution. ;-)

(Gee, you sure have a lot of scientist siblings.)

I have two siblings, both Ph.D. chem geeks. And Enzymologist's husband is a renowned chem geek. Mrs. Physicist is very concerned that Molecular Biologist will someday marry a Ph.D. scientist.

I've recently noticed that people always rhym 'life' and 'strife' in poems, still haven't figured out why. I've caught myself doing it as well

I've always wondered how the old threads get resuscitated, and for no earthshattering reason!

And you're just now posting it, or did you send via the United States Postal Service? In which case, I can understand the lateness of the announcement.

In any case, congratulations are still in order since we didn't know of it until now, and God Bless them everyone.

BTW have you had any more children since? Have you signed him up for Harvard yet? I hope you're saving your money. By the time he gets there in approx 14 years, it'll cost you at least $80,000 a year, and that's only for him how about the two young ladies who you will have to educate before him.

If I were you, I'd rearrange my theological thinking and start praying now that they all become National Merit Scholars.

Good Luck, Daddy!

Why on earth did you reply to a nearly four-year-old thread?

Since you all expressed interest, here's a recent picture of the now three-and-a-half-year-old Jake. (That's Emily, the oldest of his three sisters, holding him.)

Jake is infamously wild, but he can read really well.

Well, dadgumit, then, Physicist, get busy so we can have another real-time announcement, since I missed this one.
