Another hypothesis bites the dust?

That's why it's called a hypothesis - it's healthy when science has a bunch of them drifting across the sky like clay targets at a skeet range. Science is at its worst when a given orthodoxy stifles open debate on a given subject, such as the scorn heaped upon the topic of continental drift for many years - scorn later served back to the critics in the form of heaping platters of crow...

I would like to see some story about how oil couldn't of come from just dinosaurs and vegetable matter.

Personally I believe in the snowball theory with a slight variation. In a million years form now when the sun is burnt out and the earth is but a ball of ice who is really going to give a $hit.

The hypothesis doesn't necessarily die.

Consider this statement: "If there was no photosynthesis or life in the ocean, the carbon isotope values would be the same as the mantle," Kennedy said. "Only the presence of life causes a difference in those values.

OTOH, there are entire subsea ecosystems that thrive without photosynthesis. So one could potentially explain the carbon values in terms of "vent dwellers." And if it happened to be a time of significant tectonic activity, then one could have had a lot of vents to work with.

Just a thought.....

The idea that the Earth was encased in ice some 650 million years ago has sparked much scientific debate in recent years.

I guess warming isn't such a bad thing after all.
