Do you know if we help Jim carry some of the boxes, he'll treat us to some beer? I'll be sure to stop by if that's the case....

Thanks for the heads-up Julie, maybe tomorrow I'll have time to finally figure out how to get 12:00 to stop blinking on my VCR.

Can we have our own Clinton bashing village. Complete with gifts and pardons?

:-( I am not liking this at ALL! I don't handle change real well and I didn't see what needed to be changed in the first place. LOL

Actually, I do understand the reasons for the changes, but I'm STILL not liking it.

I don't like change either but understand the need to update and use a more economical server......and I think I'm going to need alot of help from my Freeper friends to figure out the new FR! Let's all hold hands as we enter the Brave New FR World!

Good luck guys. Glad to hear that FR will be saving some money with the move to this new server and I know you are going to do everything you can to make this as painless as possible. :-)

You're right, we all need to hold hands and keep a positive attitude. :-)

Will there be a "new" address or will hitting ,my book mark still take me to FR

Jim says they are going to have the old site redirect people to the new site. If that works, the transition this time will go a lot more smoothly than last year's. In theory you should have to change nothing, and it will all sort itself out automatically.

But... here's what's going on under the hood. When you hit the bookmark, your computer sends "www.freerepublic.com" to a server at your ISP called the Domain Name Server. That server returns a numeric IP address, the actual address on the Internet where it thinks "www.freerepublic.com" is located. Your computer uses the numeric address to reach the site.

Since last January, the numeric address of FR has been 206.112.97.70. That is what will change when John moves the servers. We don't know yet what the new address will be.

Once they are moved, a message goes out to the Domain Name Servers around the Internet telling them that the new numeric address for "www.freerepublic.com" is [whatever]. This message can take days to propagate around the Net. Last year, some people got through the first day; others waited several days before their ISP's Domain Name Servers picked up the change. The link I posted above gives instructions for bypassing the Domain Name system entirely; it allows you to manually tell your computer where "www.freerepublic.com" is. For many people last year, that was the only way to get here while they waited for the "update message" to make it around to their ISP.

In theory, this year will be different. This time, if somebody lands on 206.112.97.70 after the FR servers have moved, the machine at that address is supposed to forward them on to the new address. If that works as planned, no one should see an interruption (except for actual down time caused by unforeseen snafus).

Remember, with computers, nothing can possibly go worng.

This guy hopes that you lose the server or it blows up. He is not happy with Free Republic at all!

Too many of his al_Queerdos and jock straps for the Talibaners have been banned from Free Republic! He had no blue gray in his beard before he became the Evil One on Free Republic!

He is working on his new movie "Dead Terrorist Squawking!"
