You should never have posted this. Upon the inauguration of Dubya, Free Republic stopped being an oasis of truth in the quagmire of chaos that is the Internet. Instead, it is a brain-washing device for the religious right and a promotional vehicle for the Republican party. The only posts welcome here anymore are publicity pics of the President's day, racist anti-Islam propaganda and stories reversing 200 years of science on evolution.

Please don't expose these poor souls to the truth. They don't care about the truth. They "won," don't you know, and to a generation raised on video games, that's all that matters.

Gingrich is not my model. He had too many faults and erraticisms that canceled his virtues. In the Reagan era I happen to remember Republican national TV commercials portrayinng a semi-drunk charicature of Tip O'Neil. Reagan could do things, or not do things, the Bushs couldn't and can't because he created a momentum he brought into the White House. That momentum spoke so that Reagan didn't need to. Additionally, Reagan had consistency and brains.

To my knowledge I don't remember Reagan building leftist degenerate Ted Kennedy up as being a great senator. --or is my memory fading... Perhaps you can refresh it.

Every year it's the largest ever. Haven't ever seen it smaller. It's always adjusted up for inflation.

"...He has turned out to be every bit the brainless superficial nincompoop I said he would be two years ago. In so doing, he has made me look like a genius. --which I am...."

I know just what you mean. And doesn't it feel wonderful to be able to shout: "I told you so!" as they slam the coffin lid shut?

This is of necessity somewhat true. The dollar is worth about 1/10th of what it was 30 or 35 years ago necessitating a corresponding increase in expendatures to accomplins the same tasks.

"...Newt Gingrich did what you wanted and was lambasted by the press and the people...."

What on earth are you taliking about? In his first speech as Speaker Of the House he salaamed 5 times towards the legacy of FDR. Then he proposed lap-top computers for evey inner-city school child.

The competeing tribe in the One Party System demonized him--but he was no conservative. Or did you think that one of the warring families in The War Of The Roses was really going to fundametally alter the social structure of its time if it won?

You see the train coming down the track. Everybody tells you you are wrong. The train runst them over leaving wheel-tracks on them, and with their last dying delusional breath they still tell you you are wrong. I wouldn't care, but they take me with them.

In the meantime, Daniels, director of the Office of Management and Budget, while not offering an exact dollar figure, said this year's budget shortfall will be less than 1 percent of the size of the U.S. economy.

That would translate into about $100 billion or less, figuring that the economy is now about $10 trillion strong.

Where is this 10 trillion dollars?

Is it in goods and services?

Is it in cash in the bank?

Is it in accounts payable to this country by other economies that are almost defunct?

Is it in gold in Ft Knox or other precious metals worth 10 trillion dollars?

Or is it like Enron and who knows how many other corporations that not only do not have the proverbial "pot" but can't even get close to a "window"?

Our ability to build a better mouse trap is not worth a lot if nobody but us can buy it!

Positive thinking alone will not improve this country's present condition, nor putting our heads in the sand.

With HONEST and COURAGEOUS leadership from both sides of the aisle, and with God's help and a "long handle spoon", we can get the bitter pill of a solid recovery down.

Bull Pucky! I don't believe that bud! The Office of the President cannot arbitrarily pass Bills. That is the function of the Legislative Branch of government. I know DARN WELL that Congress would not sit idly by and let ANY President usurp the powers delegated to the Legislative Branch of government!! That has been proven (repeatedly) in the past. Take your load of manure, and put it on your garden!!

Every year it's the largest ever. Haven't ever seen it smaller. It's always adjusted up for inflation.

It's not just inflation. It's also the fact that every year new spending gets added on and none ever gets taken off. So the federal government continues to fund New Deal and Great Society programs in addition to devising new constituencies and new ways to reward them.

The biggest problem, of course, is that a full 2/3 of the federal budget is spent on maintaining the biggest and worst-run pension fund in history, and the biggest and worst-run HMO in history. As the population ages, this bubble keeps growing and growing. And the Republicans will do absolutely nothing about it because the biggest beneficiaries of these programs happen to be rich Republican senior citizens who live in expensive gated communities and live much longer than their Democratic counterparts.

So go ahead, you suckers. Support your President and his big spending plans. In time, he or some future President will do to the country what Enron did their people; not because he will want to, but because he will have to. And it really won't matter at all whether a Republican or Democrat is in power at the time. But please don't worry. Today's seniors will likely get theirs and be long gone before it happens.

If you want to see the future of America, look to California and Europe. This is irreversible because the people will never vote to take away the elixir. Not even in the face of economic ruin.

No, it's not another train. It's another Bush or Clinton running for the presidency.
