One of the issues that got me fired up for Bush in 2000 was social security reform. If Bush doesn't think he can risk the minimal heat over CFR, how can we expect him to fight the far more heated battle for real reform of social security?

And where has he backed off that? He hasn't. He has stated for months that he would sign CFR.

Look this is really a minor issue. Why turn it into a major issue that daschle and mccain can use when SCOTUS will more than likely shut it down.

We have to trust that they will do their job and rule the unconstitutional parts as such.

And if the SC fails us?

Gee, the guy is caving on everything. Illegal Alien "Regularization" (Step One to Amnesty). and now gonna' sign an unconstitutional CFR. What in Hades' name is happening?

If the nonsense continues, it's time to really start thinking of a conservative Senator or Governor to field against this guy in 2004, IMHO.

"Even as the bill's supporters celebrated, opponents planned a swift Supreme Court challenge. They want to resolve issues about the bill's constitutionality by Nov. 6, the day after this fall's elections, when the new law is to take effect. 'We're going to give it our best shot,' said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has started planning his legal attack."

I just love you folks who will put liberal democrats in office because a Republican governs middle of the road on some issues. Yeah, we'll have Al and Tipper and Hitlery and Edwards and let them take the country down the drain until everyone "wakes up" and elects a real conservative.

Maybe millions will die because there's no ABM system, the war on terrorism will be lost, we'll sell out to the Red Chinese, no oil or other energy exploration, cars the size of sardine cans, but damn it, we'll have made our stand on every last conservative issue!

It's not a perfect system, but it's all we have. We have to believe that the SCOTUS will rule unconstitutional things unconstitutional. They did the right thing in U. S. v. Lopez and many other cases. We have to respect the decision of the SCOTUS on issues of constitutionality. The liberals hated doing so in Bush v. Gore.

I'm just trying to be sarcastic. I just don't think you can pass off the responsibility to the Supreme Court. I would rather have this solved through the political process, even if it has to be done repeatedly. It's up to the President to explain to the public why the bill is defective and a detriment to the Constitution. Because Bush has such high numbers, he can afford to be bold. The public isn't clamoring for campaign finance reform anyway. Bush is not the greatest public speaker, but he's effective enough because he comes across as a good person who is honest. If he would be bold and go about it the right way, it would be easy for him to put this issue to rest for a long time. I believe there are too many issues decided in courts that ought to be solved in political debate. By the way, I'm also an Asimov fan. What are your thoughts on the "Second Foundation" books by Brin, Bear, and Benford?

*The SCOTUS that 'stole' the election stomped on the 'wondeful' CFR. I can see the headlines.

**We seem to be the only ones who can. So what does that tell you?

You'll probably hate me for this, but I agree with you.

I know, I know... it's a totally dirty trick.

Laz, you gotta understand short-term tactics as opposed to long-term goals/strategy.

Queenie, the Republicans have been feeding this hooey to us for the past 50 years. The end result, thru decades of Republican presidencies and legislatures, is a government that is bigger, more intrusive, more debt-ridden, and more expensive than ever. And every election year it's the same old pitch, "Elect me and next year I promise we'll finally start getting around to starting to think about starting to roll back government."

It never happens. It never will happen. I refuse to be played for a sucker anymore.

Ah...guess you haven't been reading my posts then. I have been very critical of him for this move (and many others prior to this). You see, one can still think highly of someone even when they disagree.

Might help if you read before you posted and don't call me 'toots.'

The only way to kill it is to have the SCOTUS rule on the issue. Then it will be as dead as the idea of making abortion illegal; keeping schools separate, but equal; etc.

I agree. We no longer hear anything about a line item veto, which I favored, but when the SC ruled it unconstitutional, it died. Dubya can't deem it unconstitutional, it wouldn't do any good for him to go through the exercise.

Ah...guess you haven't been reading my posts then.Absolutely true - ever since you sent me a number of emails (I think it was you anyway) telling me that some threads on FR are not posted for debate, and I should not question the great man ,I haven't bothered to read anything that you might have written

don't call me 'toots.'

Why not?
