Abortion-rights groups endorse governor's bid

SAN FRANCISCO -- Moving to strike a chord with "pro-choice" voters, Democratic Gov. Gray Davis accepted the endorsement of two abortion-rights groups Tuesday and derided the anti-abortion views of his Republican foe, Bill Simon.

Leaders of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) and its California affiliate said Davis had strongly protected and strengthened abortion rights during his long political career and, particularly, his three-plus years as governor.

Actually he's trying to change the subject as quickly as possible.

When the discussion of his performance as governor arises, Davis has to answer for his failed policies, squandered budget surplus, soaring budget deficit, and deteriorating roads and infrastructure.

Davis thinks abortion is a "magic bullet" that will win this election for him the way he thinks it did last time.

He's wrong. The people of California on BOTH sides of the abortion issue want answers as to what he did to trash and humiliate our great state. That's what this election is about.

Well, nice to know what his priorities are. It helps explain how the surplus turned into a deficit, why the lights went off, why we're having a water crisis now, and why California is the only state whose roads are endorsed by leading chiropractors.

But it seems to me the question is begged: just what exactly did Davis do to further pro-"choice" agenda in his three years as governor? After all, they cite these past three years as being "particularly" effective. I don't really remember him doing much about abortion one way or another. But I'll take him at his word.

I try to be a nice guy and abide by the Golden Rule, so let me helpfully suggest to Davis that if this is such a winning issue, go stand in front of an abort-a-torium and say, "I saved this friggin abortion clinic! I kept the cautery tools, miniature flailing blades, searing knives, spine-stabbers, brain-suckers, body-part grinders and small-lot crematories on in this state. Do you understand that? I kept the abortion mills on. I should at least get a round of applause. I don't get squat. People just roundly criticize me. This was worse than being in Vietnam. This was a full-out war against me. And I kept the abortion mills on!"

Abortion is not a state issue. The Governor has nothing to do with it. It is a federal issue. Bill Simon is smart enough to deflect Davis on this. The people of California want to know what happened to our huge surplus that Davis did away with because he was not prepared to deal with the energy crisis until it became overwhelming and then he did not know what to do so he blew it and our money along with it. For someone who spent most of his life in state government he sure didn't pay attention to the lessons he should have learned.

Simon beat pro-abort Riordan among women by 10 pts. Simon is now leading Davis overall and specifically among women voters.

You're right, and dead-wrong.

Women are swayed by the issue, right. And more women than men favor restrictions on abortion. It's men who want the easy way out when their immoral behavior bears consequences; women aren't as bloodthirsty as you paint them.

Were I a woman, I would fiercely resent your ignorance of the facts, and attempt to paint my sex as if it were a bloodthirsty monolith concerned above all else with unlimited power to conceive and butcher children at will. Wake up, and learn something.

The governor also cited the 180 judges he has appointed -- all of whom, he said, support the right to privacy explicitly recognized by the state constitution. Davis said that does not amount to a litmus test, but McGhee said it follows that a judge who backs the right to privacy would also support abortion rights.

So, the right to privacy 'explicitely recognized by the state constitution' only applies to abortion. Gun owners have no such rights? Is that correct?
