There was no jury finding that Simon was fraudulent. He was not even a party in the lawsuit. His family's business was found liable for fraud based on actions by people other than Simon.

Of course, when have democRATs ever let the truth get in the way of a good spin?

It's very simple: all judicial decisions should benefit the Democrats. Any decision which fails to do so is, by definition, a partisan decision.

Stop being so divisive!

But in his ruling, Chalfant wrote that it was "an immutable fact established by overwhelming evidence that Hindelang defrauded" the investors by failing to disclose his criminal past and that Pacific Coin might have been founded with drug money.

Political decision? Hindelang certainly sounds like a typical California Democrat.

Simon made too much of an issue over the judgement in the first place. Yes, I mean Simon. He should have campaigned as if it had never happened. Ignored it slick willie style. He handcuffed himself. Davis was throwing so much mud no one was listening - except the Republican leadership that should have been supporting Simon.

There is so much Simon can say and should be saying about Davis. He ought to budget some money to electrify voters and get on with putting out the lights on the Davi$ governor$hip.

Here is the way Simon could present the Davis position:

[Picture, a Pancho Villa type wearing double bandalierros, saying:]

"We don need no STEENKING judges, no STEENKING justice."

Yes, I know, that wouldn't be PC in California. How about this:

Davis has called a judge corrupt.
Why would he do that?
Does he thinks everyone is like him?

Maybe that would do the trick. Simon has to take off the gloves and come out swinging every step of the way to the election.

Yup. "His family's business was found liable for fraud based on actions by people other than Simon."

Juries don't do things like that unless they're pretty angry. My guess is that they thought one or more key witnesses for Simon's family firm lied under oath. That most commonly happens when there is a "smoking gun" in the documents. IMO someone on Simon's side of the counsel table screwed up big-time.

There are lots and lots of possible legal reasons for the trial judge to grant a new trial (my understanding is that he didn't reverse the verdict - he just called for a replay) without saying that the jury was wrong to be angry. This is not something for Simon's family to take lightly. They should take this as an opportunity to settle the case now that they know how badly they can be hurt.

As for the political effects, it's all spin at the moment. The damage to Simon's campaign has already been done. There is no possibility of this turning things around. Simon has to do things right in his campaign. He's running for Governor. His family's firm isn't.

my understanding is that he didn't reverse the verdict

Judge Chalfant awarded $125,000* to William E. Simon and Sons for legal/etc. costs, and he dismissed* the jury award. The ruling appears to be a reversal of the jury decision (to a lay person), although he did not actually "reverse" the award to make Hindelang pay millions to the defrauded* investors.

"As a Democrat, having a Republican-appointed judge alter a decision by the people during an election on behalf of a Republican candidate rings all too familiar, so nothing surprises us," said Davis spokesman Roger Salazar.

HAHAHAHA - okay I surmise the $78 million judgement surprised him too then? Not bloody likely.

Yup, that's a complete reversal. Judge Chalafont just said that Simon's family firm was right, and that he completely disagreed with the jury's verdict.

Bill Simon said he would not sign AB60 (drivers licenses for illegal aliens) in the current climate. Not sure what would prompt him to sign it, though. He says is impractical to make all illegal aliens go home and says he is pro-immigration, but he wants the illegal aliens to E-A-R-N their place here. He predicts Davis will sign AB60. Hannity talked most of the time, unfortunately.
