Carl Limbacher Friday October 11, 2002 10:30 a.m. EDT Latinos: Gray Davis Is 'One of Our Worst Enemies'
In 1998, Gray Davis got 71 percent of California's Latino vote.
A poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California in September shows that in this election, that number may drop by almost 20%.
The Davis campaign is wondering, where's the love?
Well, back in 1994, California voters, not Republican lawmakers or right-wingers or anyone else except the people who actually live in the state, passed Proposition 187, which eliminated public education and other taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants (i.e., those who were paying no taxes).
Hispanic voters, who felt the most harmed by Prop 187, blamed the measure's passage on 16 years of Republican Governors, voted for a Democrat who they thought would get rid of the Proposition, and vaulted Gray Davis to his place in Sacramento.
Davis ran as someone who was 'on the voters' side', so he promptly did exactly ... nothing.
The LA Times, in 1999, wrote: "Faced with a decision to either continue California's lawsuit to implement Proposition 187 or to end it, Davis did neither. Forced to choose between the options of either ignoring the will of California voters who passed the initiative or offending the state's Latino community that strongly opposed it, Davis did both."
Proposition 187 has since been dismantled by the state's activist court system, but LA Weekly is reporting that "Immigrant Latino grassroots groups are angry that Davis vetoed a bill that would have permitted some undocumented residents to obtain driver's licenses.
" 'Democrats used to say that Latinos were given birth as Democrats,' says Miguel Araujo, the head of San Francisco-based Centro Azteca, which lobbied for Davis in 1998 and now has withdrawn its support. 'But that's not true anymore. Davis has shown that he is in fact one of our worst enemies.' "
Republican Candidate Bill Simon has worked tirelessly to win over Latino voters, even thought they are generally wary of the G.O.P.
Can he capitalize on Davis' failures with the Hispanic community? Polls also show as many as 17 percent of voters are undecided about this year's election, and 11 percent have opted for candidates outside the major parties.
Davis has also not been able to shake Simon in the polls ... there's hope yet.

Big whoop. So the illegals topple Davis, so what?
It still leaves Kalifornia being ruled by illegals.
We have to start SOMEWHERE and why not at the corrupted top? First we get someone who will stop the legislation madness, then we take back the State.
Eventually, we can have a Republic governed by the people instead of the People's Republic...
Have a fine day...

Dick Morris was saying that if the incumbant did not have at least a 10% lead that it meant a loss for the incumbant. Things are really heating up.
