To win, Obama needs to get white voters to stay home
Hot Air ^ | August 3, 2012 | Howard Portnoy

President Obama has met the enemy, and they are us (us, that is, if you are Caucasian). So reads the handwriting on the wall, according to BuzzFeed, which reports:

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has spent more than $100 million on advertising over the last 3 months. Much, if not most, of it has been produced to shred Mitt Romney’s reputation and suppress turnout among white voters who might vote for Romney.

That last sentence is worth re-reading. It links to a New York Times op-ed that notes with equal candor, not to mention nonchalance:

He is running a two-track campaign. One track of his re-election drive seeks to boost turnout among core liberal groups; the other aims to suppress turnout and minimize his margin of defeat in the most hostile segment of the electorate, whites without college degrees.

It’s a simple matter of arithmetic, the BuzzFeed article goes on to note. In 2008, black voter turnout reached its highest level ever. Hispanic and “youth” voters (ages 18 to 29) also turned out in record numbers. Obama captured 43% of the white vote, cinching a victory.

But with black unemployment reaching 14.4% in July and unemployment among millennials at 12.7%, enthusiasm is down. The dreaded “white vote” is now expected to account for 75% of ballots cast.

By most analysts’ lights, Obama needs to capture 40% of that voting bloc to win a second term. But a Quinnipiac poll released on July 12 shows him attracting just 29% of non-college-educated white males. Taken together with other recent polls, Obama’s share of the white vote as a whole is well shy of the 40% threshold.

The BuzzFeed piece predicts a “chemical warfare campaign, the war to end all wars” but doesn’t offer specifics on what that might translate to.

In the meantime, one might wonder how Obama supporters countenance speaking in such matter-of-fact terms about voter suppression, which Democrats consider the ultimate sin. The answer is provided in the Times op-ed by Thomas Edsall, who asserts that Obama is merely taking a page out of the Republican handbook. “Over the past two years,” he writes, “Republican-controlled state legislatures have been conducting an aggressive vote-suppression strategy of their own through the passage of voter identification laws and laws imposing harsh restrictions on voter registration drives.”

It is a fascinating admission. He imputes the basest possible motive to supporters of voter IDs laws, and one that is unprovable, to justify behavior that can’t rationalized as anything other cynical and anti-American. Just imagine the reaction if the tables were turned.

This year, don't waste your vote casting it for free! DEMAND MORE FREE STUFF! It's the new "fundamentally transformed" Amerikan way!

LOL!

I think he is going to be rudely surprised. Free stuff or not, a huge portion of America is just plain sick of the man and want him gone.

And yes, that includes a lot of people on entitlements. They’re not going to stay home, they’re going to vote because it’s the only way they can punch him in the nose — metaphorically speaking, of course.

American pride counts for alot among working class men and women. They may not be rich, but they are American and that means something. Barry’s bowing, apologizing, condescending anti-Americanism ticks them off because when he deminishes America, he deminishes THEM.

They will trudge through snow for the chance to vote against him. Come what may, they will at least have fought back that much.

The only white voters that will be staying home will be the freepers who love conservatism more than America, all the rest of the Conservative freepers who love America first will crawl on their knees to vote for Romney.Thank GOD most freepers are grownups enough to tell the difference between Obama and Romney and will be voting for Romney

Demographically...Obama is toast.

His two biggest voting blocs, Blacks and Hispanics, normally vote in low percentages. White Guilt Liberals, his strongest group in regards to voting percentage...are not happy with him.

Seems the group most motivated this election are the ABO’s...Anyone But Obama.

My, how sanctimonious of you!

Well, I hope you will be happy under Romney where gay marriage, gun control and every other item on the liberal socialist agenda will be implemented. Romney IS no different from Obama. He will rule differently, but the result will be the same: the destruction of America.

Vote for whoever you wish, but don't try to intimidate or guilt the rest of us to voting the same as you. And don't tell me I don't love this country. It's because I love this country that I refuse to vote for any liberal who seeks to bring it to ruin. Doesn't matter to me if the candidate has an R after his name.

He also needs to disenfranchise the military serving overseas, which is exactly what they are now doing in the primaries and will most likely do in the general. I remember the same scandal in the Clinton election.

Gore got a bunch of military ballots thrown out in Florida, also.

No, it makes you one of a special group of people that remember what is was like to grow up in a free America, and wholly necessary to securing those freedoms for our posterity.

Congratulations on almost reaching 60. Some don't get the privilege. I'm not far behind you.

No, I’m 70, so I’m the old grouch here, and I wish you would hurry and grow up! If we get the Senate and the House... Romney won’t be able to do the things you are saying. The conservatives will be doing the legislation... He will literally HAVE to sign... He can’t dis his own party and won’t. But if Obama is in, because you stayed home for some adolescent principle, he will veto anything sent to him. Romney isn’t my choice, I damned sure didn’t vote for him in my SC primary, and I’m not voting “for” him in the national election. My vote for Romney is my vote against Obama!

I am grown up. Unlike you, I vote according to my principles. I don’t vote for a guy just because he isn’t Obama.

You should change your tag from ‘fatnotlazy’ to ‘stupidnotlazy’. Just a suggestion.

So they need to convince people if Romney was not their GOP choice they should stay home. Not that 4 more years of Obama is going to be better than Romney. convince them to throw up their hand and sit out. I am sure there will some people ready to stay home , but they are already beyond reach.

Can we convince African American to stay home, please?

I’m 77, so move over:-)) I respect those who won’t vote for Romney - but I don’t understand them. Getting rid of ovomit, defanging reid, pelosi, shumer, durbin, all the appointed czars, and saving the next SCOTUS appointments are the most important things in our history.

I long ago gave up being a Republican - now call me a conservative - and please help me conserve what we have left of our Republic!

If you think we couldn’t control a Romney in office, how do you tink we could control obummer in a 2nd term?

Patriots, Arise!! Now is the time for all good men, etc....
