GOP Insiders: Cruz Presidential Campaign Expanding Base, ‘Hitting On A Lot Of Cylinders’

This campaign has legs.

GOP insiders are giving Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, high marks for his campaign rollout, now a month into his presidential bid.

As reported by the Washington Times, the key to Cruz’s success in the GOP primary is the solidifying of his place as the anti-establishment candidate in the race.

“He is expanding his base, and he is right now hitting on a lot of cylinders and I think the mechanics of the campaign have done well,” said Dave Carney, a GOP operative in New Hampshire. “My advice is: do not underestimate him. He is a serious, serious, guy and the more the nation’s elites make fun of him, the stronger he will be. Everyone ignores him at their own peril.”

Cruz fired the first shot in the fight to win over the evangelical vote by holding his campaign launch at Liberty University last month. Liberty is the country’s largest Christian university and was founded by Jerry Falwell. Falwell’s 1980s political group, the Moral Majority, did much to pave the way for Reagan’s ascension to the presidency.

Cruz knows he will need that same level of Christian support not only in the primary, but also in the general election, if he is to prevail in 2016. Cruz has taken strong positions on issues that resonate with evangelicals, including his support for traditional marriage, the lives of the unborn, and Israel, all of which he mentioned during his campaign launch speech.

Robert Vander Plaats, head of The Family Leader, an Iowa-based Christian group, told the Washington Times that Mr. Cruz’s rollout has been “exceptional.”

“I am one of these who believes if the caucuses were held today, Cruz would definitely compete for winning it,” Vander Plaats said. “I think he is really being rewarded for his bold leadership in the Senate, and his willingness to expose both sides of the aisle — not just the Democrats.”

Another key component of Cruz’s viability as a presidential candidate will be his fundraising ability, and once again the Texas senator is showing his campaign has legs. Within a week of his announcement, $4 million came into his campaign war chest. Within two weeks, super PACs supporting his campaign raised over $31 million.

Bloomberg Politics reports:

From his time as a Senate candidate in 2012, Cruz has been one of the country’s most aggressive and successful super-PAC fundraisers. His political team has calculated from the start of their planning for a presidential campaign that his overall operation would be able to keep pace with rivals in part because of a robust super-PAC operation. They have talked among themselves about the names of numerous wealthy Cruz backers who they fully expect will contribute several million dollars each.

His support of the flat tax and abolishment of the IRS appeals to fiscal conservatives and tea party voters.

Speaking to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Cruz pledged to do far better than Mitt Romney did in gaining support from the Hispanic community. Romney received 27 percent of the Latino vote according to exit polling. Cruz’s father is a legal immigrant from Cuba. The Texas senator has taken a strong stand against President Obama’s “executive amnesty,” but made clear to the Chamber, “There is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am.”

The Real Clear Politics average of polls of Republican presidential candidates finds Cruz in the middle of the pack — even with Rand Paul, ahead of Mike Huckabee, and running a few points behind Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, and Marco Rubio.

I judge a politician by how many of the right enemies he has.

Cruz has more of the right enemies than anybody else, by far.

Conservatives:

This is THE CANDIDATE we’ve all be waiting for.

If you’re not in with both feet, all your work, all the cash you can scrape together, it is hard to complain if Cruz loses to another Bush.

Consolidate Conservatives NOW behind this good solid straight conservative man!

Thanks for faithfully continuing to post these Ted Cruz articles. As conservatives attempt to consolidate their support behind ONE candidate in the primaries, this is the sort of positive information that we need.

It is telling that these “insiders” have much to say about mechanics, polling, firing up the base, etc.

About principled conservatism, not so much.

The insiders are the problem.
