The Brief: With Second Place in Sight, Cruz Has Big Push in N.H.

The Big Conversation

The pivotal and increasingly more difficult to predict GOP presidential primary in New Hampshire will happen tomorrow. As the Tribune's Abby Livingston reports, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is campaigning with an urgency similar to his efforts in Iowa.

"Cruz already has an Iowa victory under his belt, and will soon turn to Republican supporters better aligned with his message in Southern states in the coming weeks," Livingston wrote. "But he is campaigning here in New Hampshire as if there is not tomorrow: come Tuesday, he will have made at least 17 stops in a week's time."

Donald Trump has run strongly in the Granite State for a while now, and Livingston reports that the real race here is for second place with the four "establishment" candidates -- former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio -- "desperately need(ing) a strong finish here."

Livingston adds, "Cruz could displace them all and take the second-place red ribbon, or his appeal to base voters could prove tone deaf here."

One of the wild cards at play heading into the final couple of days in New Hampshire: assessing exactly how much damage Rubio did to himself at Saturday's GOP presidential debate....

Thank you for that info. I didn’t read it, knowing it was too absurd for words.

Are you her next door neighbor or cousin? How do you know what she is up to?

“It was understandable enthusiasm among Cruz’s workers.”

Good way to put it.
One thing this whole thing shows; is that Cruz has a team working for him that is eager and tuned in to what is going on.

I will tell everyone, being here in Iowa; the tension was high a week ago.
Very easy for something like this to have happened.
I am very glad its over and behind us and everyone is gone.
Seeing Ted Cruz in the doorway as I left church the Sunday before was a bit different!

Far from huffy... just not keen on hypocrisy.

Have you ever met Ted? Not being sarcastic... I am genuinely interested....

Have you met him?
Have you had any personal interaction with Ted at all?

If so then you know what I’m about to say, If not then brace yourself..

Many of us in Texas know Ted... I mean REALLY know him.... we have had the pleasure 3 years ago of sitting in a bbq joints with him, Tea Party meetings, Liberty meetings, so on and so forth.

Folks like Katrina Pierson, Matt Armstrong, Konni Burton, Ken Emanuelson Maggie Clopton Wright Morgan McComb Mike Openshaw and many MANY others and listened to this man talk and express his passion..... Tell us his vision for Texas and America..... Then make promises to us and ask our support...and he got it - WE GAVE IT and Ted HAS KEPT HIS PROMISES - he has not sold his integrity to DC interest but rather - kept his commitment to 27 million Texans!!

What I am saying is - Once Ted starts getting around the country - towns large and small, sitting in mom and pop bbq joints, burger joints diners, tea meetings, Republican clubs, churches, picnics Etc. - I honestly believe everyday people JUST LIKE ALL OF US will discover Ted isn’t the boogeyman the MSM has painted him.

I believe millions will come to understand Ted is in deed the real hope we need to lead us back to the shining city on the hill!

Of the many time I have seen Ted ... the one I value the most was Convention 2012.. I took my son... then 11 and Ted saw Angela and I and we chatted ,hugged ect. ...Then he took my boy Quinn, who I had taken with me to convention and sat down with him and chatted about 15 minutes....people trying to see him and Ted sat down with my boy and spent 15 minutes ...yea.... I’m sold

“Apparently Ben Carson will only settle for blood.”

I thought he settled for turning Cruz into Paula Deen at the debate. :-)

No, not her next door neighbor or cousin. Palin makes her political positions pretty well known through social media and other media outlets.

Of course we heard the same thing in Iowa, but of course you can boast about it in a blue state and then you’ll see Cruz take South Carolina afterwards.

You use the same standard on your candidate?

Well then, you follow her to your heart’s content. I’m working on getting to $100,000. One lady here in Texas has raised well over two million dollars. And remember, no one can give more than $2,700 per election cycle.

No, I’ll stick with candidate who hasn’t contributed a dime to Harry Reid, Charles Rangel, Chuck Schumer and the DSCC or registered Democrat until 2009.

He’s lost my respect.

He didn’t turn Cruz into anything. He turned himself into a whiney little turncoat.

Where was his outrage when Trump virtually ran him out of the race back when Ben Carson was actually thought to have a chance ... back when he was leading in Iowa?

Trump couldn’t take that. He had one of his Trumpertantrums and took it out on Ben.

A few months ago, when Donald Trump referred to Carson as pathological and compared him to a child molester, Carson had nothing to say. He was completely impotent. And in fact, his numbers tanked shortly thereafter.

So, who does Carson choose to lie about and abuse? The nice guy. Go figure.

Why is “Paula Deen” in second place in many polls and leading in several later states? Maybe the race card ain’t what it used to be after 7 years of Obama?

I have not met Cruz. I have followed him during his senate campaign and beyond. I was initially impressed but have thought less of him the more I have watched him.

His presidential campaign has been the nail in the coffin. He comes across as inauthentic, condescending and self serving. I agree with most of his positions but his character rubs me the wrong way.

I don’t think Paula is going to be a factor much longer. If Paula does not hit big in the SEC she will be back baking cakes. :-)

GG2 seems to think that Ben Carson “shamed” Ted Cruz at the most recent debate in a similar way that Paula Deen was “shamed” for saying “the N word” many years ago after being robbed by a black man.
