Donald Trump’s terrible night in Colorado exemplifies his campaign’s Achilles’ heel
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | April 8, 2016 | Philip Bump

Posted on 04/09/2016 2:48:56 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The assumption for months was that everything would fall into place. That there was no need to really dig in, that the outcome was obvious. And then, too late, it became clear that this optimism was unfounded. Or maybe not too late, but late enough in the process to mean that folks would have to scramble. And now everything is up in the air.

The paragraph above describes the Republican establishment’s attitude about Donald Trump’s candidacy, obviously. But it also describes Trump’s push for the nomination itself.

From the moment he stepped onto that escalator on Trump Tower until about a month ago, Trump’s assumption was that he could power his way to the nomination through sheer force of will. That the scene when he strolled through the Iowa State Fair, pulling people into a tight cluster around him as he moved through the crowd, would work at an electoral level as well. And, despite the skepticism of the establishment (and myself), it nearly did. With remarkably little effort beyond bopping around the country in his private jet, Trump vaulted into the lead and stayed there.

But that strategy has hit its limit, thanks mostly to Ted Cruz’s dogged campaign efforts....

You failed to Mention Ronald Reagan and was a partner of Lee Attwater

Certainly not Karl Rove and Mitch Mc Connell

Accurate headline. Content: so so. Trump should have had a better ground game way earlier. No question.

Ground game has very little to do with it in this case...A ground game works when Cruz and Kasich or Bush are the top contenders...The GOPe that's in Washington goes all the way to the ground...

The local GOP groups are just as GOPe as those in Washington...That's the way they are set up...A non GOPe doesn't get to the position of delegate...

Our/Trump's only chance at the delegate level is if there are enough delegates who care more about the Country than they do the Party...

"Every member of the GOPe has endorsed Cruz."

You clearly need to use more tinfoil.

The Colorado primary is 100% eGOP controlled, not voters involved, so how is that Trump’s negative issue?

If anything, it shows Cruz is eGOP and Trump is not.

YOU MEAN YOU DON'T CONSIDER CRUZ'S $202,000 FROM GEORGE SOROS TO BE AN ISSUE????

I have been using tRumpbots, sTrumpettes, etc... I think I might steal "Branch tRumpidians". It has that "cult" feel that is so appropriate. Of course now that Kirstie Allie(sp?) is supporting him may Trumpologists.

"Trump has hired a master at seducing delegates and has won his candidate the nomination before."

True, but he's got a long row to hoe, and not a lot of time. Most of the delegates have already been selected, as well. I'm not sure some GOPe New York lawyer will have much effect on nearly a thousand already selected delegates from around the USA.

There’s no hope of reaching these folks, vet. One can’t reason someone out of a position that he didn’t reason himself into in the first place.

The Speaker hasn’t hesitated to condemn Mr. Trump’s bad ideas on the merits as they arise, including his Muslim travel ban. But Mr. Ryan also has other obligations, not least protecting the GOP from larger damage this election year.

Are there really Republicans dumb enough to fall for this article you linked to???

How many Republicans besides YOU think restricting terrorists from coming into our country until they are fully vetted is cultic and a bad idea???

But Trump isn’t just a random demagogue promoting bigotry in some haphazard way. He has an agenda and a message, and it’s a dagger aimed directly at Ryan’s vision for the party. On issue after issue, from trade to immigration to entitlement reform, a Trumpized party would simply bury Ryanism/Kempism under white identity politics, and swing as far from Kemp’s enthusiastic minority outreach as the G.O.P. could get.

More outrageous lies...That's all you Cruz supporters have got...'White identity politics'??? White Power??? Ku Klux Klan??? Trump supporters are White Supremacists???

And then not going along with;
unfair trade for the U.S.
opposition to the invasion of illegal aliens
saving Social Security for Seniors,
are all anti-GOP???

And by agreeing with Trump on those issues we are cultists???

I don’t trust Trump because of his monetary support of liberals....

Conniving politicians....the ones we despise....have hit lists of people, suckers who write checks. Donald was on top of the pols' sucker lists.

God knows what the conniving pols told Donald in order to get a bigger donation:

<><>lamenting their sex lives (or lack thereof)

<><> oppo research on their opponents;

<><> dirty inside Wasdington gossip?

Donald knows plenty which explains a lot of the political silence surrounding Donald....perhaps why he surged to the lead?

But Donald's not talking.....yet.
