Donald Trump’s terrible night in Colorado exemplifies his campaign’s Achilles’ heel
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | April 8, 2016 | Philip Bump

The assumption for months was that everything would fall into place. That there was no need to really dig in, that the outcome was obvious. And then, too late, it became clear that this optimism was unfounded. Or maybe not too late, but late enough in the process to mean that folks would have to scramble. And now everything is up in the air.

The paragraph above describes the Republican establishment’s attitude about Donald Trump’s candidacy, obviously. But it also describes Trump’s push for the nomination itself.

From the moment he stepped onto that escalator on Trump Tower until about a month ago, Trump’s assumption was that he could power his way to the nomination through sheer force of will. That the scene when he strolled through the Iowa State Fair, pulling people into a tight cluster around him as he moved through the crowd, would work at an electoral level as well. And, despite the skepticism of the establishment (and myself), it nearly did. With remarkably little effort beyond bopping around the country in his private jet, Trump vaulted into the lead and stayed there.

But that strategy has hit its limit, thanks mostly to Ted Cruz’s dogged campaign efforts....

Note the sign-on date of the one claiming there’s a “Cruz troll army” if you will.

But then look at your sign on date...You just crapped and stepped in it...

You might want to sit down: President Reagan was all for TPP.

Yes he was and it was a disaster for the middle class of America...I liked Reagan but I have never forgotten he was an actor before he was a politician...

his commitment to the Constitution and his past actions and his principles.
...........................................................
Obviously his support of the Corker bill which denied the Constitutional DUTY of the SENATE to ADVISE and CONSENT, his support of the Trade Pacts which diminish American Sovereignty mean nothing to you. Cruz is not eligible according to the Constitution, yet you Cruz people continue to call him a constitutionalist! It is well noted that you Cruz people would rather pick at straws than elect a
REAL PATRIOT who PUTS AMERICA FIRST!

I think it’s excessive, so I am providing some balance.

Thank you. i agree it is excssive to post numerous articles daily, all touting that Cruz is the constitutionalist, when he is NOT!

Since WHEN does someone’s sign on date to FreeRepublic have anything whatsoever to do with that person’s intelligence or knowledge of politics? IOW you believe a person has to have been a Freeper for YEARS to have a valid opinion?
Got news for ya. It doesn’t work that way.

You could also say TRUMP IS NOT A LIFETIME POLITICIAN! I think that is an enormous plus factor.
Funny how the REAL ISSUES of this election are buried under all the false pretensions of Cruz as to being a Conservative and an Originalist, while his illegal pursuit of the presidency is supported by every RINO in Washington!....and a lot of RINOS here. People are known for the company they keep.

You do realize that Cruz will have the vast majority of delegates from Pennsylvania even if Trump wins the primary vote by a huge margin, right? Most of the delegates are elected unpledged by district and its Cruz who has actually recruited candidates or win over the ones who are elected in their own recognizance.

And Trump has supported every single liberal Politician in the Tri state area. He may not be a life time politician, but he has spent a life time buying liberals.

This is a classic example of having the GOPe machine working for you. Indiana is another example. Ted Cruz has sold out to the GOPe and therefore inherits the machine.

You sound a little butt hurt from the truth. The hand writing is on the wall if one really wants to see it. Cruz has sold out to the GOPe and the Republican club machine is working to help Cruz. Indiana is another example.

Cruz and his wife worked for Bush in Washington. Heidi has a high level job at Goldman Sachs and is a member of the CFR. You can’t get any more establishment than that.

Jeb just couldn’t make it but someone who wanted to take shortcuts to the Presidency (forget that he wasn’t even born in the United States) would be more than eager to carry out the plans of the Bush dynasty—just look at how Neil Bush is now backing Cruz. It’s the old Washington game of Let’s Make a Deal. Funny hats anyone?
