The assumption for months was that everything would fall into place. That there was no need to really dig in, that the outcome was obvious. And then, too late, it became clear that this optimism was unfounded. Or maybe not too late, but late enough in the process to mean that folks would have to scramble. And now everything is up in the air.
The paragraph above describes the Republican establishments attitude about Donald Trumps candidacy, obviously. But it also describes Trumps push for the nomination itself.
From the moment he stepped onto that escalator on Trump Tower until about a month ago, Trumps assumption was that he could power his way to the nomination through sheer force of will. That the scene when he strolled through the Iowa State Fair, pulling people into a tight cluster around him as he moved through the crowd, would work at an electoral level as well. And, despite the skepticism of the establishment (and myself), it nearly did. With remarkably little effort beyond bopping around the country in his private jet, Trump vaulted into the lead and stayed there.
But that strategy has hit its limit, thanks mostly to Ted Cruzs dogged campaign efforts....

I’ve been here since 2005.
I am temporarily posting on this sign-on, because I am currently overseas, on a non-secure connection so I decided to use this sign-in temporarily.
I ordinarily post, as Cringing Negativism Network.
Yeah, I heard that, too. I think most of those donations were to the Clinton Foundation.
That's even more "meaningful."
Think about it.
I don’t know what to call it...
I just heard on CNN that Colorado doesn’t even have a caucus or vote. What the hell?
Difference is Trump is their boss, while with Cruz the GOPe is Cruz’s boss.
I’m just saying I think Cruz is becoming (extremely) destructive to the GOP.
He is going to mess this party up, but good.
Cruz is the problem.
(so I am taking issue with 2ndDivisionVet, because he’s become a sort of stand-in for him on this website)
I think it’s excessive, so I am providing some balance.
You know who donated millions to the Clitons? The Bushes. Which candidate are the Bushes supporting? Cruz.
Another sundance blog? Busy as a beaver, that guy.
Project much? You who signed up two months ago and have been spewing Tumpoganda the whole time?
You’re being generous. I suspect some of the recently active FReepers are being reimbursed by the leading campaign. If I were running for president, I’d hire bloggers and commenters to get my message out.
Chris Cristie?
Please see post 41.
Thanks.
Good point.
Accurate headline. Content: so so. Trump should have had a better ground game way earlier. No question.
Both candidates have received endorsements from less savorable types. Do we want to judge candidates by the bad endorsers?
The arguments go both ways. I support Ted but I choose not to engage in hyper-reactive comments. I try to post comments that are more thought provoking than something that invokes a an emotional response. I dont see Cruz or Trump as the anti-christ and I’m reserving that for the demon-crat candidate.
;-)
There’s no hope of reaching these folks, vet. One can’t reason someone out of a position that he didn’t reason himself into in the first place.

I’m not saying Trump hasn’t received endorsements from questionable sources.
I am however saying the ENTIRE MAINSTREAM GOP ESTABLISHMENT has signed on, endorsing Cruz.
That just stinks. Those people are the people who messed up this party, and have been selling out America to a massive communist nation, with five times our population.
100K is chump change compared to Cruz’s law firms donations to Obama and Democrats.
“Ted Cruz was hired as a partner Morgan Lewis & Bockius in 2008, during the presidential election in which Barack Obama became president. Morgan Lewis & Bockius made contributions totaling over $200,000 in support of Obamas campaigns for President, as well as $750,000 to Democrats since Cruz became a partner.”
