Two senior Taliban officials arrested

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Pakistani authorities have arrested two senior officials from Afghanistan's deposed Taliban regime, reported CNN.

One of the arrested is believed to know the whereabouts of the elusive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. Pakistani intelligence sources said the two officials were captured in western Pakistan near the Afghan border.

One was identified as Maulvi Abdul Mannan, governor of Badghais province under the Taliban. CNN reported he was close to Omar, whom the United States has been seeking since it toppled the regime three months after the al-Qaida terrorist network carried out the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The other person arrested was identified as Najeeb Ullaha, a Taliban military commander.

Mullah Mohammed Omar is believed to be hiding in the Kandahar region of western Afghanistan, once a stronghold of the Taliban.

Pakistani authorities say they hope to gain more information about Omar's whereabouts from Mannan.

The two failed assassination attempts on Mushareff (sp?)might have kindled a fire.

I have a feeling you are right there. I hope they put these two under a really bright interrogation light, if you know what I mean, to get some information out of them.

After the most recent WMD news, the US needs a high profile capture. Preferably, OBL but Mullah Omar wouldn't be a bad catch either.

I think their interrogation techniques are much more imaginative than we are allowed.

The recent cascade of arrests certainly suggests that the arrestees are singing like canaries.

PS correct spelling is Musharraf, I just checked.

I was away from computer and internet since Friday mid day, so
I'm just getting caught up. Lot's happening! What I like about this news is that it is obvious that the pressure is really on from Musharaff. I think Musharaff has decided to wrestle the crocodile. IMHO he won't be able to let up now and hope to survive, so I think he's in it all the way.

Dog, thanks for finding and posting this stuff. I'm just a bit disappointed that it doesn't seem all that many freepers follow these posts.

I think many more than meets the eye follow these posts... JMHO. I lurk on these constantly, so I can only assume others do as well.

I am appreciative of those who have the where-with-all to find 'em and post 'em!

Mullah Omar would be a nice catch, although he's a certifiable fruitcake.

I am amazed at the pace at which these folks are being picked up.

If you recall, Pakistan's ISI was behind the Taliban, and helped it grab power. For a long time after 9/11 it was always suspect as to its allegiance. Even though Musharraf removed some of the key Taliban supporters within the ISI, it always seemed a possibility that Pakistan intelligence was somewhat compromised, and someone within the ISI was tipping off the terrorists before they could be captured.

Well, that's obviously not happening any more.

Clearly Musharref is aligning himself with the US.....despite his flaws we could never have prosecuted the hunt for taliban and al qaeda in Afghanistan and the border areas without his help.

I hope you're right. I know I read a lot of threads that I don't ever post to. However, what concerns me is that a "rumor" thread about OBL being caught will draw 5 or 10 times as many posts as a "7 al-qaeda members nabbed" item --- and almost all of the "rumor" posts are cynical or frivolous. Maybe it doesn't occur to some that real bad guys are really getting caught, and that maybe it's just a matter of time before an OBL, Mullah Omar, al-Zawahiri are pulled from a hidey hole.

This is not exactly a rant, but I do hope that more freepers will take a look at these threads. We're winning, slowly but surely.

I think more people click on the Osama rumored to be captured threads....because deep down they really want it to be true.

Principled is right, many do read but not post.

And I'm remiss in not thanking you, also.
