ITHACA NY--Ithaca's mayor spoke out on the issue of gay marriages Monday.
Mayor Carolyn Peterson says gay marriages will be recognized in Ithaca, they just won't be performed.
Mayor Peterson said any application for a marriage license from a same-sex couple will be accepted and then passed on to the State.
The State Health Department says same-sex marriages are illegal.
Mayor Peterson says if those applications are denied in Albany, the city of Ithaca and its attorney will fight the decision.
"Same-sex couples deserve the equal protection of the law, the same as any other couple. They deserve to be able to bring their families out of the status of second-class citizenship and into the full array of rights and responsibilities that are available to married couples," she said.
Two couples applied for licenses Monday morning and those licenses are already being forwarded to the Health Department.
And these are the "respectable looking" liberals of Ithaca. You should see the ones that aren't considered "mainstream."
And risk the wrath of the feminazis?
Declare them a higher order of evolution.
Declare them a higher order of evolution.
LOL!
Gee...."her state" (ha) in the frontlines of perversion and she's got nothing to say?
Bark, bark ... meow, meow!
I hope it wasn't taken that way, If it was I apologize..
The turd is the mayor, I was being kind toward him/her....
Bump! we are stooping to their level..
There goes that reelection. Liberals don't mind wasting other peoples money, but when you try to touch theirs they freak!
Man/boy, father/ daughter, woman /goat, cat/dog, soccer mom/mini van, enviroweenie/toad........
Justice of the peace weddings are part of common law predating the US constitution.
Licensing, on the other hand only goes back a hundred years or so. Note that the Health Department is in charge of this. The purpose of licensing was to keep children from being born with VD. Do you still need a blood test to get a marriage license these days?
"If there is a lawsuit brought by (anyone) who is denied a license by the state of New York, the city will join ...in the lawsuit in seeking to overturn that decision," city Attorney Martin A. Luster said Monday.
Town of Ithaca Supervisor Cathy Valentino said she supports the city's decision, adding that she "will do everything that I can for the Town of Ithaca to stand in solidarity with the city on this issue and go to the wall if we have to."
While not having a legal role to play, County Legislature Chairman Tim Joseph expressed support for the movement, saying he felt the law banning gay marriages is itself unconstitutional.
Town of Ithaca residents Sue Martin and Kristine Shaw, who approached the city asking for a license, have been together as a couple for about eight years. They are registered as domestic partners in Rochester, where they used to live. The pair said they had considered going to another jurisdiction, such as Canada, to seek marriage, but would prefer to get married in Ithaca someday.
Don't laugh.
The way I see it, we may as well put a fork in it...we're done. There will be no constitutional ammendment to protect marriage, (even if we got that it wouldn't mean anything...like the Constitution means something anymore) it at best will be a states rights issue (if states have any rights not usurped by the fed gov anymore) Gay couples will find someone/some legal binding authority to support them, because government will always be infested with greedy power hungry people that could care less about doing what is right. You and I will foot the bill for the increases in legal, medical, and other civil-entitlements that go along with these "marriages". There is nothing we can do...its happening/has happened, and too many people are brainwashed by the tolerance doctrine to even give a damn. I say don't laugh, because this is only the beginning. Look for the "right" of polygamy, the "right" of people marrying their dog/cat, and the "right" of people to marry the 12 year old he/she met on the internet to be next. That will all happen too, in time.
