Very fat cat seized (40 pound German house cat! With picture)
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | April 7, 2004

A German cat weighing six times the normal weight is so fat that it cannot take more than four steps without getting exhausted.

Now officials at a Berlin animal shelter are having trouble finding a new owner for six-year-old Mikesch, after it was taken away from his elderly owner.

The man, who was himself taken to a nursing home, had been feeding the 18.5 kilo cat two kilos of mince each day.

"You can call it cruelty to animals," said shelter veterinarian Karin Bartell, as the cat stared straight ahead with a bored look.

"It's a problem for joints and the heart. The cat can't clean itself because he is too fat. He walks three or four steps and is completely exhausted because the heart no longer works properly and the cat can't breathe normally anymore."

Mikesch has been put on a strict diet to reduce his size.

Cats usually weigh between 3-6kg and should eat no more than about 300 grams of food each day, vets say.

A spokesman for Guinness World Records said they did not keep track of fat cats any longer but said the existing record was 18.55kg - a cat from Minnesota named O.T.

Miss Kitty was less than four pounds when I found her by the street a few years ago - sadly, she's now 12 pounds.

I'm not sure what to do about it, but I'd like to trim some fat off of her for health reasons.

They dined on mince, and slices of quince, which they ate with a runcible spoon . . . O lovely pussy, oh pussy my love, what a wonderful pussy you are, you are, you are, What a wonderful pussy you are!

I see someone remembers "The Owl and the Pussycat". Now I feel sad.

My poor little Simba is down to 4lbs. he is twelve. He had a bad ear mite infection and this caused him to stop eating. He is doing better now, Dr. wants him at 6lbs.

My biggest is 17 lbs - but he is all around big. He also goes outside, so he gets a good workout.

The males tend to put on weight after they are castrated. (Kind of like men who get a vasectomy).

Maybe nostalgic would be a better word. That was one of my favorite storys as a little kid.

How to tell if your cat is too fat-
Confused guests constantly mistaking her for beanbag chair.
Always lands on her spleen.
Fifteen month gestation period, and still no kittens.
No longer cleans itself unless coated in Cheese Whiz.
Anna Nicole Smith fits through your kitty door without the aid of lubricants.
Waits for the third bowl of food to get finicky.
He only catches mice that get trapped in his gravitational pull.
Enormous gut keeps your hardwood floors freshly buffed.
Has more chins than lives.

shiver...
Miss Kitty had the same thing.
Mr. Mabelkitty "thought" she had ear mites and gave her some over the counter treatment. She stopped eating and was ill. We did take her to the vet the very same day (or next) because she was especially loving and affectionate - that is odd behavior for her.
The vet told us that she didn't have ear mites, but she did have a problem from not eating, and the reason she stopped eating was because the medicine for the ears so overpowered her sense of smell she couldn't eat. Cats need their sense of smell or they wont't eat.
She was in kitty ICU, but came out of it after a week. We no longer use any type of remedies on her at all - she is an indoor animal. And if we do, we get it from the vet - no place else.
I bought the stinky canned cat food and mixed it in with her good dry stuff until she started eating okay.
We also never ever serve her any milk products - that isn't good for them either.

My cats are also indoors but damit they all have ear mites. Well it was my fault for not taking him to the Vet sooner. He just deteriorated before our eyes. But since the Vet cleaned his ears and he is now on ear treatments at home (that is fun). It is such a difference. All my cats stay in yet their ears are all a mess! I'm glad Miss Kitty is doing better. :)

Why?
It's not like it's a sin, or, uh, well, nevermind...

Ear mites...do you have a dog or are you outdoorsey folks?
That may be it - my idea of camping is checking into a Radisson, so we don't have that problem. ;)
