Church bells are the closest analogy to the Islamic call to prayer, and I assume most Freepers would not and do not object to church bells, so why the outrage? I understand the concern, that the Islamic call to prayer blaring out over mid-America has disquieting implications, but as a matter of law or policy, can we defend allowing church bells while banning the Islamic prayer call? Maybe someone can point out a distinction that I'm missing . . .

Maybe and maybe not. From what I understand, and this comes from previous threads about this city, the city is far from an American city. Most of the inhabitants are Polish who don't speak English and muslims. This is from the failure of our immigrations laws to assimulate immigrants into American culture.

I've probably read as much or more about Islam than anyone on this thread, but I can't see a legal basis for banning the Islamic prayer if one allows church bells and popsicle trucks playing music over a loudspeaker.

Blasphemy and speaking against God are unforgiveable sins according to Christ. Islam 101 is actually wrong, because the sin would be forgiven if that person (for whatever crazed reason) converted to Islam. It's just that, according to them, you don't want to die in that state.

The argument could be that church bells are historical since our country was founded on Christianity.

Is there a pool yet for how many calls to prayer before the loudspeaker is somehow, er ... "malfunctioned"? I'm thinking that there are probably a number of ways that oculd happen:)

I've also read the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and I don't think we have a right to ban a form of religious expression just because it frightens us. Islam IS a threat to the USA, both internally and externally, but there are some things we can't do in opposing it.

That's a matter of taste, not law. It was a good question: according to current law, why shouldn't they be allowed to do so if church bells are allowed?

I heard a good idea last night on a zoning law that could pass constitutional muster: ban electrically amplified sounds above a certain loudness. That would be religion-neutral. However, it would allow bells but make the Muslims go old-time and have their guy shouting from the minaret, which wouldn't be as loud as the speakers.
