At the same time, the vapour trails, in the right conditions, can form feathery cirrus clouds which warm the surface of the Earths by trapping heat.Uhhh, wouldn't they also block sunlight from warming the Earth???

Believe it or not, contrails are also formed just by the air-foils of the plane re-compressing air that passes over them. The engine need not be directly involved in the process.
Having been fortunate enough to go on an orientation flight on an F-15 I was able to videotape contrails forming from the wing-tips and the top of the tail.

Did anyone say Art Bell...
The strange-looking streaks in the sky aren't your imagination. They are anti-bacteriological warfare chemicals being tested by the federal government. And the public has been kept in the dark.
The Pentagon [and possibly other federal government entities] is testing anti-biological warfare agents, which produce the mysterious "chemtrails" that are appearing on an irregular basis in the skies over many American cities, towns and rural areas.
Chem Trails
And all this time you thought they were con trails. Silly us.

Water vapor is the most significant of the so-called 'Green-House' gasses. And it has been suspected of being a main culprit in the differential in the global temperatures between the Northern and Southern hemispheres for, oh, at least 5 years. But NONE of the global warming religionists want to curtail jet traffic, who like Kerry, are too busy jetting around giving seminars and making their bucks via said mode of transport.
So I herewith predict that you will never see the UN or the Kyoto bunch, or the Sierra Clubbers etc jump onto this, and demand an immediate curtailment of high-altitude jet traffic. It is adverse to their pecuniary self-interest, and their globalist agenda, which also requires the free movement of their change-agent-virus, oops, I meant NGO's and bureaucrats. It gets in the way of creating the World Government.

Has a study been done on the affects of smoke vapors coming off of suicide bombers in Israel or the Mideast and global warming? I do know that these vapors have been know to result in death. Better to use the energy to stop this type of global warming than stopping the jet vapors from our F-14's.....anyone know what kind of global warming that the Stealth has?

Tips my hat to prognosticator guy.
Now I'll sit back and watch the Capt and J H discuss this.

Yes, dihydrogen monoxide can be fatal if inhaled...
Contrails are formed at high altitude when a heated object passes through cold, moisture-laden air (hence capt-norm's contrails off the wingtips, etc. Wings get pretty warm in flight. Friction, ya know)
Unless the contrails completely obscure the sun, day after day, it would have very minimal impact on mean temps. Looks more like this 'scientist' is bucking for more research dollars.
Its good to be on the gubmint dime.

Shut down all flights in January or February, and I bet the Northeast is still covered by clouds most days.Actually, you are not recognizing the high-altitude nature of these contrails, as opposed to the low-hanging winter stuff that blankets a lot of the eastern seaboard and midwest of the U.S. during winter...and Seattle year-round--allegedly! :-) [ Actually, not true, just a scam by Washingtonians to keep California people out! ]
Anyways, this possible connection has not been previously advanced by the enviro wackos...but by the most solid of meteorological researchers who have been debunking the junk science of the global warming religionists. And it was proffered because of the NASA satellite data showing distinctly impacted variations in temperatures at various layers...as the more reasonable hypothesis than the knee-jerk CO-2 conjecture...which did not fit the facts at all.

"...anyone know what kind of global warming that the Stealth has"
The air force recently released details that the B-2 was to utilize two extra internal bays outbord of the main undercarrige for extra weapons capability. The two 9ft long bays were originally installed to hold chemicals, which were to have been sprayed into the engine exhaust to eliminate contrails, but the idea didn't work and USAF planners are now considering their use for new weapons. As for the contrails, a rearward-looking sensor tells the pilot if he is contrailing and he then changes altitude.

If anyone here is going to tell me that man-made clouds up to a hundred miles wide DON'T affect the weather, I'm going to tell them they're nuts. OK lets suppose for the moment that is true. Do you believe that it follows that the resulting clouds contribute to GW?
Based on my 42 years of astute observation, increased cloud coverage reflects solar radiation and cast shadows thereby cooling the earths surface and air temperature. This is why I curse clouds on all golf and water skiing days. If it is as you suggest and aircraft are responsible for ruining my weekends, then I will join you in cursing them.

They don't and I'm not. Those "clouds" are not thick enough to intercept even a tiny amount of energy going up or down. They cover such a small proportion of the total sky that they are statistically insignificant. Junk science... run amok in search of a financial grant!

I want to see the planes gone too. And also automobiles. I want to go back to the days where we had to either walk everywhere or ride a horse. Actually I'll probably just skip the horse-riding part. I like to walk.

Great quotes! Thanks for pulling that together.
I really like this one:
"What weve got to do in energy conservation is try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, to have approached global warming as if it is real means energy conservation, so we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy. ban planes, hire a camel-jockey for transcontinental trips, buy sail boat, then turn back the calendar

I hate planes anyway, and would like to see them gone. But I have no doubt they affect the climate one way or another.. I love planes and would fly somewhere every week if I could afford it.
I live a couple of miles from Philly airport and love to see the jets taking off and landing from my living room window. Absolutely beautiful machines.
Even if it was proven that they caused gobal warming etc, it would be worth it.
Besides, I'm a Republican which means I am against the environment.

This is gonna drive the liberals crazy. Suddenly flyover country will have to be drive through country, and that will mean they will more than likely have to actually look at real Americans in the face.
