ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Naval Academy (search) has removed references to men from its fight song, saying the lyrics excluded women from the school's heritage.

The song "Navy Blue & Gold," (search) originally contained the lyrics "Now college men from sea to sea may sing of colors true. But who has better right than we to hoist a symbol hue: For sailor men in battle fair since fighting days of old Have proved the sailor's right to wear the Navy Blue & Gold."

Guess they will have to add a note here and there when they sing "men/women".

"The superintendent has been discussing this for some time," Gibbons said. "He's been very clear that the change was not made in response to any external pressure or internal pressure."

No external or internal pressure. Uh huh.
He just woke up one day and said, "Today, I think I'll break tradition".

Why do all these PC things keep happening under Republican administrations?

They changed the words to our alma mater several years ago. One of my collegues, trained in Latin, pointed out that the term "alma mater" means "fostering mother." He suggested we rename the pc version the "alma neuter."

Dear K: Thanks for post. I must say that I find it absurd that an institution training people for war is afraid that some women who might be bothered by the use of the word, "men", in a song are simultaneously going to be capable of battle or handling shipboard life. On one hand, the admiral acts like these women are delicate little hot house orchids who simply aren't tough enough to hear the word, "men", in a song without getting the vapors, but then at the same time, expecting these same women to enter the armed services, where they'll be expected to assist in killing and dealing with sailors and Marines. Seems to me that the Admiral is being patronizing to the academy women. Or the selection process for admission is dire need of repair.

" . .saying the lyrics excluded women from the school's heritage. . ."

Well, women are NOT part of the schools heritage! They sure are wanting to be a part of its destruction though. SIlly bunch of female twits!

It aint the republicans fault. They happen because the childish liberal dems are throrwing as many tantrums as they possibly can until they get their little red wagon back.

Mine! Society is MINE! screeches hitlary and the midless women who follow her.

Why stop there? Don't Marines also graduate from Annapolis? The word "sailor" would also discriminate against them. They should change it to sailor/Marine. I know it would be hard to sing that way , but be want to be fair.

People have tried to do this at Notre Dame without much luck (thankfully)....

This has been going on as far back as the 1970's when ND went co-ed. Suggested change to last line of the Victory March:

"While her loyal sons go marching onward to victory."

to:

"While her loyal sons and daughters march on to victory."

In terms of cadence, it works (number of sylables). In terms of tradition and fan support, it doesn't work. So far the fans have ignored any attempt to make this happen. I guess it's different when you have to answer to congresscritters like Pelosi and Boxer for your funding support instead of fiercely tradition-bound fans.

Now Wellesley grads from sea to sea
May sing of evil men,
And who has better right then we
To bash them now and then?
For Movement shrikes in battle fair
Since days of fighting Newt,
Have proved a womyn's right to wear
The Crusty Black Pantsuit.

Yep, they'll have to rewrite the lyrics and part of the song. I know where they can find a couple of good composers......
