I should have been a bit more clear, I suppose. There are those in the lower economic classes who pay no taxes- to them Public School is free. You are also correct about his comments extending to those of all ethnic and racial groups. It does however extend into all socio-economic classes as well. I can't count the number of times I've heard some rich white kid driving the beemer daddy bought him say things like, "what kind of dog that is?" (dressing and acting like the poor young blacks Cosby is talking about? Why? Fashion. Trends. Gotta be cool like the people on TV, yadda, yadda, yadda) And I'm not surprised that your experiences with the public schools have been completely ridiculous. I wouldn't send my kids there unless I had no choice.

Cosby said he was chagrined that conservative radio talk shows seized on his comments and recirculated them. Yet he said he was more concerned about protecting children in unsafe neighborhoods."If I weigh a loudmouthed conservative racist announcer's thoughts and opinions against a 12-year-old child being shot," concern for the child wins, he said.
Still the jerk, aren't you Cos'.
To: mhking
Mfume said he disagreed only with Cosby's emphasis on "lower economic people," saying there are blacks who are "not doing enough" in every economic class. It's about decency, manners and excellence. These are things being pushed aside by people everywhere. Still, the lower class street thug style being emulated by kids, sports stars and entertainers is everywhere.
It's pretty funny to see rich kids from the suburbs wearing locks and speaking "street."
Word to ya mutha.

You must be a lawyer.
I don't recall mentioning you by name, are you making the claim that every lawyer has paid his student loan.. or just that you have?
I never had the desire to be a lawyer, my conscience wouldn't allow it.
Out of curiosity, did you file charges against any of the senators who refused to look at all the evidence in the Clinton impeachment trial?

I have a good friend who is a third grade school teacher in the local public school system, in a low-income district. When he started the position, he was an unabashed liberal, a card-carrying leftist. His years of experience in this district are causing him to slowly come around, away from the "it takes a village" point of view.
The stories he tells me would break your heart. Daily he deals with really bright children, disadvantaged simply because they are handicapped with reprehensible parents; eight-year-olds who don't get picked up after school because their guardian is sleeping off a good drunk at five in the afternoon. No fathers to provide support or be role models. The vast, overwhelming majority of the social and behavioral problems in these kids can be traced directly to the absence of parental guidance and support. Kids whose parents won't spring $2.50 for the cost of a field trip, yet will show up to pick up their kid dressed as if they're attending a Hollywood Ball. (He and I have a standing agreement that I will pick up the costs.) Eight-year-olds so filled with anger and hate its difficult to imagine.
Those who think this is a "black" issue are sorely mistaken. Parents who abandon their children to be raised by the government nanny cut across every line in the sand you could care to draw. The one common denominator my friend and I have seen in all the kids saddled with social and behavioral problems is the lack of personal responsibility in the parents. Almost without fail, their home lives are utterly messed up.
Many parents play the "my child has a learning disability" game. It it a way for them to obtain additional government assistance. Some of the parents are actually quite clever at manipulating the system this way.
Bill Cosby is right on the mark with his comments. The only mistake he made here is allowing the interpretation to be made that this is a problem divided along racial lines. It is not.

Hi. I didn't say "all white" I said "all those whites," meaning the slave owners, the makers of Jim Crow laws, and the Democrat politicians who corrupted blacks with tax bribes.
I agree with you that talk of collective guilt is nonsense. Maybe my wording was confusing, but I was talking about all those who were individually guilty of contributing to black malaise.

Cosby said he was chagrined that conservative radio talk shows seized on his comments and recirculated them. Chagrined, huh? Has liberal media delivered any reaction to Cosby's statements, and if not, does he wonder why?

He has spent too much time on the paid lecture circuit while overlooking the destruction of significant parts of black culture. How many scholarships has he set up for young balack men and women ?
Literally hundreds. But more over, why is that an issue -- what entitles someone else to his money?
That's no different from the government liberating me of my money to put into someone's pocket who is "disadvantaged."

Right - I didn't *think* you were the collective guilt type person, it just sounded like that. My response was primarily for the lurkers and residual "mass guilt" believers!
There is no such thing as "group karma".

Speaking of "loud mouth racists"...
Billy-boy (ooo, how DARE I use the 'racist term 'boy'!) is not exactly hush-mouthed.
AND, he flatly stated that he would NOT hire ANY whites for his last, unlamented, (at least I hope it was the last) incarnation of 'The Cosby Show'. He managed to rationalize this as not racist, but 'social justice'.

Even the black ruling class in this country doesn't get it. Cosby's comments are correct as far as they go, which isn't nearly far enough.
