(ZOT?) Don't Bash Kerry for Paying his Respects to Reagan
06/08/04 | xm177e2

Posted on 06/08/2004 7:29:51 PM PDT by xm177e2

Quite a few FReepers have attacked John Kerry for visiting Reagan's coffin and paying his respects to the man. I think this is wrong.

If he hadn't paid his respects, the same people would be throwing a fit.

John Kerry did not wait in line: Neither did other dignitaries (aka "important people who are not celebrities"). Neither did Arnold Schwarzenegger. Do you think George W. Bush should wait in line? Please. That's pathetic. John Kerry is, by virtue of being the presidential candidate for a major political party, more important than the rest of us. Just like George W. Bush was more important than the rest of us while he was running for president in 2000. Get over it.

Kerry gave a "thumbs up" in his limo: someone cheered for him, so he responded with a thumbs up. It's a pretty sedate response. Get over it.

Kerry bragged about opposing Reagan's policies in the past: Well, yeah. John Kerry is a left-wing Democrat and Former President Reagan was a right-wing Republican. We live in a democracy and people are allowed to disagree about this sort of thing. Whether or not Kerry was right to disagree with Reagan (I don't think he was), we should still begrudge Kerry the right to disagree.

Kerry was in a no-win situation. He also issued a very respectful statment about President Reagan and stopped his campaign for the week.

OMG!
Are you serious?
He hated RWR.
He brought along a cameraman!
WHY?
To be on tonight's news.
Guess what?
He was.
Name one other US Senator who barged in
on the "public viewing" of RWR?
You can't, because Kerry is the only one.

This was the most crass and totally blantant
attempt to politicize RWR's passing imaginable.
Kerry is totally void of shame and decency.

What makes you think Jeff Chiu is a freelancer? An Yahoo! search shows that he has taken many pictures for AP in the past year, mainly of sports figures, but also of John Kerry and John Edwards when they came to visit California. A post on a sports bulletin board also suggests he has worked for AP since last October.

Someone had to notify Chiu that Kerry would be there. Kerry's campaign said early this morning that Kerry would be viewing around 2:00. Now, why would the campaign have to release such info unless they wanted a photo-op.

Nobody had to notify anyone that Kerry was coming. The press followed him to California on his plane. Just because he suspended major campaign operations doesn't mean the press went home.

Yes, the press may have violated the no photography rule. And Kerry might have been treating this as a photo-op. But I think there's more to this story --- I think Kerry will be unable to attend tomorrow's Congressional memorial service due to his daughter's graduation, and is overcompensating by paying his respects today. He doesn't want to have to field questions about why he was AWOL again, even though most of us would understand why.

I had no doubt it was a Photo Op all along .. especially since he was also going to be in DC for that viewing

Kerry was trying to act like he and President Reagan were such good friends and that was the reason he felt compeled to fly in for the CA viewing

What a load of BS and Kerry just show what lack of Class he has

Please permit me to clue you in.

This is NOT a "blog".

This site is for Conservatives.

Since you have "other" ideology from the rest of us,please go over to DU or LP or whatever place tickles your fancy,as you and your "other" ideology is NOT wanted here.

Governor Schwarzenegger is not only the GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA,he WAS INVITED,BY THE WIDOW,NANCY REAGAN,TO ATTEND! Guess what? Kerry was NOT invited,he's just a Senator,a Senator,by-the-by, who did as much as he was able,to DETRAIL everything President Reagan tried to do,and bad mouthed him up until the day the man died.

Kerry USED this opportunity,to get on T.V.! He brought his own camera crew.THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY,POSITIVELY,NO SHOW OF " respect", in any way, shape, manner, nor form. IT WAS A PUBLICITY STUNT!

As a nurse, you don't have the pejorative,do you, in whom you choose to treat well,or treat at all.At least one would hope that you don't go down a list of your personal biases and then mistreat Republicans. So your pettifogging of that point is both banal and moot.

President Bush didn't die, Ronald Reagan did. I don't expect Kerry to stop campaigning against his opponent. But I think he has been decent to Reagan. Possibly not sincere, but decent. (so far) I am not full of hate, like those on DU and other crazy liberal places - that's all.

Look at this:

“I met with Reagan a lot more than I’ve met with this president,” Kerry said.

The Democrat also said he had more meetings with George H.W. Bush during his one term than he has had with President Bush.

“I liked his father very much. I like his dad. He’s a very good guy. He used to write notes. I have a number of notes from him. He’s very thoughtful,” Kerry said.

Not me..I wouldn't have cared a bit. I do think he did the right thing postponing the campaign against carnahan....sort of like Ashcroft did while running for Missouri Governor. But do I think he has a heart..not sure about that. It probably flops as much as it flips.

Kerry could have paid respect to Ronald Reagan at any time during his twenty years in the Senate. He did just the opposite, portraying our President as a moron and a liar, who presided over a "decade of greed", when the "rich got richer and the poor got poorer."

He should just keep quiet now. Or, if he wants to truly pay "his respects", wait in line with everyone else. Yes, Arnold was given special treatment; but, then, he was a Reagan supporter, never slandering our President's good name.

I thought his daughter was graduating TODAY .. or at least that was the excuse that was given

You don't get it, do you? Kerry IS campaigning all the while saying he's NOT campaigning.

And he is invited for Wednesday night and Friday morning.

This was a photo op.

Man, after reading some of these posts defending Kerry, the thread disruption, and now that interesting tidbit, I had to check to see if the full moon was out tonight!

Can you explain how a man carrying a video camera got into the library? How was he able to move around the room for a good shot at Kerry when folks who had waited for hours just to walk in prescribed lines had to stop while the pic was taken? Who suspended the rules laid down by the Reagans?
