Regan eventually gave purpose to his mother and most especially his father.

Alcoholism is a severe malady and Reagan transcended family problems.

The family, too, stuck together. This is no minimizing the achievement of overcoming the handicap of family affected by alcoholism.

Superb eulogy by Cheney.

Cheney's words seemed to affect Mrs. Reagan more than anyone else's. Before, when Hastert said "Mrs. Reagan" she seemed to jump, as if she realized he was talking to her. She was elsewhere, focused on the casket holding the other half of her soul. But when Cheney spoke, it was obvious at least to me, that she absorbed every word and they moved her deeply.

The Marine then shifted his crutches to his left hand and then saluted with the stump of his right arm.

Any chance of seeing this in the NY/LA Times? (rhetorical question)

OK, I looked him up on Google. I am ashamed to say that Rev. Coughlin is a Catholic priest.

Speaking of priests, two priests paying their respects to Reagan in the rotunda each gave him a blessing as they went by.

Why are you ashamed?

I remember some music from JFK's funeral. Ruffles and Flourishes and Hail to the Chief, of course, but there was a song that I'd never heard before and didn't hear again for years utnil high school or maybe college. It was the Navy Hymn and I thought it was so beautiful, still do. I wanna say there was some bagpipe music, too, but I wouldn't swear to that.

I seem to remember that aside from the continuous drum beat, the funeral dirge was the only music played during JFK's procession. The Navy Hymn (Eternal Father, Strong To Save ...) is very moving and was certainly appropriate for JFK.

Check for FReepmail.

Because as the Congressional chaplain at a state funeral he should have given an invocation/blessing not a political rant against Reagan. As one FReeper put it, his remarks were "disgraceful."

I didn't realize this thread was still active. Another one was started this morning but isn't getting any postings.

I happened to catch this cap this morning.
I thought it very touching. Showing up in
full dress shows great honor and respect.

The 'Chief' used the feather wand his is holding
to bless. IIRC, the blessing is to the 4 corners,
which represent the natural elements: earth, wind/air,
fire, and water.

I didn't hear a rant. Not at all.

Sen. Santorum is in the rotunda with two of his kids (I presume they are his).

That brings me to mind of a question I've often wondered. Do you know if it's appropriate for a non-military person (me) to salute a member of the armed services (for instance, a former commander-in-chief)?

Be my guest. I know the thread on Pres. Reagan's arrival at the capitol yesterday was somber, but when I saw the Cesar Romero pic, I couldn't resist posting it along side Bela Pelosi.

How very lucky are the few of the thousands passing by who just got to stop and witness the changing of the guard up close!

Yes.

I am still amazed at the number of young people, the 'under 30' including small children, who are viewing. That was the same in California.

Yes, at the beginning of the viewing last night, they would clear out the rotunda before changing the guard. At some point, they decided to let some of the public remain and watch the changing of the guard.
