Does anyone here know or have a link to the music used for the recessional hymn used in Reagan's funeral. I'm familiar with a great deal of Anglican music, but did not recognize the recessional hymn.

It was so completely beautiful and dignified.

"The Mansions of the Lord" is the title. I believe it was used at the end of the movie "We Were Soldiers."

I'd like to know, too. I agree--it was the highlight of the ceremony, IMO. Also, does anyone know if some type of video of the funeral will be made available? Thanks.

I knew I had heard it before, but could not place it. I'll check and see if that is the piece.

Thanks

FReeper ktw has offered to make DVDs for any who want them. He posted this on the live thread:

I am doing all of it to DVD, if you want a copy!!
Lots of people are requesting it. Just send info here.

I setup a special email for the request. So many requests. This way is it easier for all.
Just send the following info to email address....

rwrdvdrequest@sucon.org

1) Name
2) Address
3) City, State, Zip
4) Ship by Regular USPS or Express Mail
5) MPG and/or DVD format
6) Copies needed
7) Any special label on DVD's.

******
He's only asking for enough to cover the cost of the blank DVDs, cases, and S&H. I believe he said he expects it to run 5 or 6 DVDs for the whole thing.

Speaking of the music, does anyone know why c-span replays don't have Ronan Tynan singing the "Ave Maria"? Or did I just imagine I heard it? Will it be on that freeper dvd? I'd buy one just for that.

I taped (from Cox DVR) the whole funeral and have played the portion of "The Mansions of the Lord" no fewer than 100 times. I have never heard a piece more moving than this one. The drum rolls (directly after the voice part ends) is simply amazing. If you have surround sound, it is even more awesome! I have found several pieces from Nick Glennie-Smith and there are a couple of them that kind of "play around" with the tune to this song. Go to any downloading music program, type in his name and you should be able to pull them up. Purchased the movie “We Were Soldiers” and there are different parts in the movie where this music is played. The whole song in its entirety is played at the end of the movie. However, it doesn’t sound nearly as good as the one at the National Cathedral (the violins at the funeral were much crisper and the orchestral part plays two times).

If someone has a recording on DVD of the portion of this funeral, I will definitely pay to get it. In the meantime, I will be trying to download that portion onto VHS tape since I don't have a DVD recorder yet.

P.S. To see the looks on the Reagan family while this piece of music is being played will definitely move you, for sure! To see Nancy's eyes look up from the floor towards the last of the voice part is amazing. Also, right as the casket passes Nancy, has anyone noticed that she tries to touch it? I think Patti whispered to her something to the effect of "did you try to touch him" and her (Nancy)'s answer was "yes, yes."

The Mansions of the Lord, wav file (excellent)

Lyrics

1. To fallen soldiers let us sing
where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
to the mansions of the Lord

2. No more bleeding no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
just divine embrace, eternal light
in the mansions of the Lord

3. Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard to the angels sleep
All through the ages safely keep
the mansions of the Lord

This is a phenomenally beautiful hymn. I have the MP3 on my computer, and I cannot stop playing it. Nearly a week after the service for Reagan, it still brings tears to my eyes.

Tynan sang the Ave Maria prior to the official start of the service. I would guess the CSPAN replay starts with the priest receiving the president's body at the Cathedral narthex.
