Suggesting that people five thousand years ago (in all known major cultures) came up with the same explanation (a flood) after noticing geologic strata seems too far fetched even for scientists. A global flood caused by a natural phenomenon like a large meteor strike in the ocean, or any number of other possible scenarios, would make much more sense and would also not necessarily be attributable to the wrath of a deity. The problem (for them) is that natural catastrophes can be and are frequently are linked in peoples' minds to the actions of a deity and this group aparently wants to avoid that with an explanation which makes no sense whatsoever.

"Man, wouldn't those make some awesome oyster stew!"

I'd guess they'd be sorta tough to chew...;-)
