Saddam, Flipper FReep Kerry/Streisand Fundraiser in L.A. [PICTURES] (6/24)

Posted on 06/25/2004 8:00:47 PM PDT by markv840

Californians Give Kerry a not so warm welcome

John Kerry had a major fundraiser dinner this Thursday in Los Angeles; Kerry and friends, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, and others met at the Walt Disney Concert hall, where they hosted an event for which tickets ranged from $2,000 to $25,000. This was of course, a great chance to show Mr. Kerry that not all Californians support him, and that when he comes here he’s sure to encounter some resistant. As it has become almost a tradition around here, Kerry’s presence brought on a grandiose demonstration of the FReeping abilities of us Californians.

This amazing demonstration was organized by our ferocious leader RonDog; the FReep went without a hitch. There were about 30 of us, the most notable were of course Saddam (played by RonDog), and Flipper the dolphin. Another highlight of the FReep was a pick-up truck adorned by several conservative messages, e.g. “Kerry is Unfit”; and a group of pro-lifers not far from where we were standing (and they had HUGE signs).

The media was everywhere, and they did several interviews. We all know that the most important thing in every FReep is to get our message heard as loud and clear as possible; and from this point of view this was clearly a success. One of the major advantages we had during this demonstration was the location; the Walt Disney Music Hall is one of the most dazzling buildings in Downtown L.A. and being across the street from such a place gave us a chance to sort of “cut in”. We made a lot of heads turn, and as usual we also made a lot of middle fingers rise. All together, this was everything you’d want a FReep to be like.

...the "flip flop" message introduced by the "guy in the dolphin suit."
Having a "guy in a dolphin suit" harass Kerry everywhere he goes is a WONDERFUL idea, though.
I strongly recommend we adopt this tradition - all across the USA.
From a previous thread:
Here is a SHORT EXCERPT from www.pittsburghlive.com:

FLIPPING OUT. Democrats once used a person in a chicken costume to stalk former President George Bush during the 1992 campaign. Now, Pennsylvania Republicans are using someone in a dolphin costume to go after presumptive Democrat presidential nominee John Kerry.

The Capitolwire.com Internet site reported last week that Flipper made his first appearance during a recent Kerry rally at the University of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania GOP Committee Chairman Alan Novak promises Flipper will show up regularly at Kerry's Pennsylvania visits.

"John Kerry has flip-flopped his way through this campaign," Novak said. "He has a bad habit of saying one thing and then changing his opinion to appease one particular group or another. America needs a leader, not someone who lacks the conviction to take firm positions on the critical issues facing our nation."

-- snip --

And, HERE is a short excerpt from www.cbsnews.com:

One possible attendee at the Kerry speech is Flipper, a man dressed in a dolphin costume who accuses Kerry of being a "flip-flopper" on the issues. CBS News’ Steve Chaggaris notes that Flipper made an appearance during a Kerry event in Harrisburg, Pa., on Thursday. "Interestingly, Flipper, who first made an appearance in Palm Beach County on April 19, has his own press folks who sent out a release on his behalf Thursday. 'Flipper to Join Kerry at Harrisburg Visit,'" read the release adding, "(Pennsylvania) Republican State Committee Chairman Alan Novak warned residents of Central Pennsylvania to be on the lookout for a flip-flopping Presidential candidate from Massachusetts,'" Chaggaris reports.
-- snip --

Interestingly, Flipper, who first made an appearance in Palm Beach County on April 19...
See also, from www.palmbeachpost.com:
About 20 Bush supporters held signs in an area behind some barricades. Rob Flint, a junior at Palm Beach Atlantic University, rented a dolphin costume for about $75 and called himself "Flipper" to call attention to what he said were flip-flops by Kerry.

"It's about 150 degrees in here," said Flint, a South Carolina native and member of the College Republicans. "This is a good opportunity. It's not often that John Kerry is at your back door," Flint said.

Dolphins, Casual Footwear Follow Kerry

Something to Yak About: Dolphins, Casual Footwear Follow Kerry
John Kerry can run, but he can’t hide, at least not from GOP activists making their point at various and sundry Kerry events across the Fruited Plain. When the Gentleman from Massachusetts rolled his “Bring It On-Misery Index-I Actually Did Vote For the 87 Billion Before I Voted Against It” Tour into Minneapolis Monday, about 50 supporters of President Bush, waving inflatable dolphins and flip-flop sandals, greeted him. One guy even had yellow flip-flops dangling from raised hockey sticks! He shoots… He SCORES!

The Kerry Flipper – Birth of a Legend
The Republican National Committee does not track the origins of campaign props, but Greg Pierce of the Washington Times reports that John Kerry campaign appearances by Flipper the Dolphin – a reference to the famed TV sea mammal and Kerry’s propensity for flipping and flopping on issues ranging from education to war – was spawned by Pennsylvania Republicans. Who knew?

A Symbol of Destiny?
You don’t need Bush Backers to get Flipper at a John Kerry event. During a campaign stop in Tampa, Florida last month, Kerry was addressing a crowd about the environment when an actual, living dolphin cruised through the aquatic backdrop for the event, prompting the candidate to announce that the dolphin was speaking. “He says, ‘help, help, help,’” speculated Kerry. No, we are not making this up. Is this destiny or what?

Flipper Trivia
The television show Flipper made its debut on September 19, 1964 and ran for 88 episodes. The NBC hit ran through September 2, 1967, according to Fifties Web.

Don’t Forget the Flip-Flop
Flipper gets most of the ink, but don’t short sell the humble flip-flop. While songster Jimmy Buffet immortalized the casual footwear in his smash hit Margaritaville, the ‘flip-flop’ was originally a term for an electronic circuit invented in 1919. What does a flip-flop do? “A trigger applied at an appropriate point can cause the circuit to flip from one state to the other. A trigger at another point can cause the circuit to flop back to the other state.” Sound like anyone you know?

Greetings from dc chapter. You guys did a fabulous job.

Your freep of Kerry was better than anything we have done to freep Kerry.

You had truly awesome signs and costumes and a great turn out too.
Thanks, staytrue!
We certainly DID have a great "Kerry" FReep. :o)
But one of my all-time personal favorite FReeps EVER...
...particularly for getting extraordinarily good MEDIA coverage...
...still has to be THIS one, by the "Masters of the FReep" - at the DC Chapter:
Hillary Goes to Wal-Mart

BEFORE...
...from the pre-FReep thread:
See also from the IAISND (I Am, I Said, Neil Diamond) website:

Streisand, Diamond to Sing for Democrats

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, who crooned the 1978 hit "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," will sing for John Kerry and the Democrats next month as a star-studded list of entertainers perform at two fund-raising concerts in New York and Los Angeles.

Streisand and Diamond will perform together for the first time in 24 years at the Los Angeles concert, the Democrats said.
And, from www.barbranews.com:
Barbra and Neil may perform a 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' Parody - but is to be confirmed.
So...
...how about THIS sign?

HEY, NEIL & BARBRA!

PLEASE SING:
"YOU DON'T BRING ME...
FLIPPER!"

IN HONOR OF
JOHN "FLIP FLOP" KERRY

AFTER...
...from this post-FReep thread:

We decided that SIMPLER is BETTER:

WHY NOT SING...
'YOU DON'T .
. BRING ME

. . 'FLIPPER''

...Kerry was indisputably brave in Vietnam, and it's kind of cute to see Democrats pretend to admire military service. Physical courage, like chastity, is something liberals usually deride, but are tickled when it accidentally manifests itself in one of their own. One has to stand in awe of Kerry's military service 33 years ago. Of course, that's where it ends, including with Kerry – inasmuch as, upon his return from war in 1970, he promptly began trashing his fellow Vietnam vets by calling them genocidal murderers.

But if Bush can't talk to Kerry about the horrors of war, then Kerry sure as hell can't talk to anyone about the plight of the middle class. Kerry's life experience consists of living off other men's money by marrying their wives and daughters.

For over 30 years, Kerry's primary occupation has been stalking lonely heiresses. Not to get back to his combat experience, but Kerry sees a room full of wealthy widows as "a target-rich environment." This is a guy whose experience dealing with tax problems is based on spending his entire adult life being supported by rich women. What does a kept man know about taxes?

In 1970, Kerry married into the family of Julia Thorne – a family estimated to be worth about $300 million. She got depressed, so he promptly left her and was soon seen catting around with Hollywood starlets, mostly while the cad was still married. (Apparently, JFK really was his mentor.) Thorne is well-bred enough to say nothing ill of her Lothario ex-husband. He is, after all, the father of her children – a fact that never seemed to constrain him.

When Kerry was about to become the latest Heinz family charity, he sought to have his marriage to Thorne annulled, despite the fact that it had produced two children. It seems his second meal ticket, Teresa Heinz, wanted the first marriage annulled – and Heinz is worth more than $700 million. Kerry claims he will stand up to powerful interests, but he can't even stand up to his wife...

-- snip --

Kerry is like some character in a Balzac novel, an adventurer twirling the end of his mustache and preying on rich women. This low-born poseur with his threadbare pseudo-Brahmin family bought a political career with one rich woman's money, dumped her, and made off with another heiress to enable him to run for president.

If Democrats want to talk about middle-class tax cuts, couldn't they nominate someone who hasn't been a poodle to rich women for the past 33 years?
